TL;DR
  • In scholarly critique listening, the answer usually depends on the speaker’s stance: agreement, partial agreement, objection, limitation, or alternative view.
  • Listen for evaluation words like 타당하다, 한계가 있다, 간과하다, 설득력이 부족하다, and contrast markers like 그러나, 다만, 반면에.
  • TOPIK II often hides the answer behind neutral academic language, so confirm whether the speaker is supporting, criticizing, qualifying, or reframing the claim.

Use the tracks below as TTS scripts. For each track, listen twice:
  1. First pass: answer without pausing.
  1. Second pass: confirm the speaker’s stance by catching keywords, contrast markers, and conclusion sentences.
  1. Optional shadowing: repeat the final two sentences aloud to internalize academic critique patterns.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK II listening passages about scholarly critiques often sound calm and objective, but they are not neutral. The speaker is usually evaluating a theory, study, policy, interpretation, or argument.
Your goal is not to understand every detail. Your goal is to identify:
  • What claim or theory is being discussed
  • What the speaker thinks about it
  • Which limitation, evidence, or alternative perspective supports that stance
  • Whether the final position is strong criticism, partial acceptance, or cautious revision
In Korean academic speech, criticism is often indirect. Instead of saying “this is wrong,” a speaker may say:
  • 설명력이 충분하지 않다 — it does not explain enough
  • 일정 부분 타당하지만 — it is valid to some extent, but…
  • 논의의 범위가 제한적이다 — the scope of discussion is limited
  • 후속 연구가 필요하다 — further research is needed
  • 지나치게 단순화했다 — it oversimplified the issue

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Stance signals

Listen for verbs and adjectives that reveal judgment.
Korean signal
Meaning
Stance clue
타당하다
valid
support or partial support
설득력이 있다
persuasive
support
한계가 있다
has limitations
criticism or qualification
간과하다
overlook
criticism
과장하다
exaggerate
criticism
재검토할 필요가 있다
needs reconsideration
critical revision
보완되어야 한다
should be supplemented
partial acceptance

2. Contrast markers

Scholarly critique questions often turn after a contrast marker.
  • 그러나 / 하지만 — however
  • 다만 — however, with a limitation
  • 반면에 — on the other hand
  • 그럼에도 불구하고 — nevertheless
  • 오히려 — rather, instead
  • 물론 …지만 — although it is true that…
The answer is often after the contrast marker, not before it.

3. Scope and limitation language

Academic speakers frequently criticize by narrowing the scope.
  • 일부 사례에만 적용된다 — applies only to some cases
  • 자료가 충분하지 않다 — the data is insufficient
  • 사회적 맥락을 고려하지 않았다 — did not consider social context
  • 원인과 결과를 혼동했다 — confused cause and effect
  • 개인적 요인만 강조했다 — emphasized only individual factors

4. Final-position sentences

TOPIK answers often match the last judgment sentence.
Common final-position patterns:
  • 따라서 이 견해는 수정될 필요가 있다.
  • 결국 이 연구는 의의가 있으나 한계도 분명하다.
  • 이 점에서 기존 논의는 보완되어야 한다.
  • 그러므로 단정적인 결론을 내리기는 어렵다.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Catch the topic first. Ask: “What theory, study, or claim is being evaluated?”
  1. Mark the turn. When you hear 그러나, 다만, or 반면에, expect the speaker’s real stance to appear.
  1. Classify the stance.
      • Full support: “This is persuasive.”
      • Partial support: “This is meaningful, but limited.”
      • Criticism: “This overlooks something important.”
      • Reframing: “The issue should be understood differently.”
  1. Avoid answer choices that are too extreme. Academic critique is often cautious, not absolute.
  1. Use evidence words. Match answer choices with the reason the speaker gives: data, method, scope, social context, or interpretation.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Mistaking the introduced claim for the speaker’s view: The first theory mentioned may be what the speaker criticizes later.
  • Ignoring partial agreement: 의의가 있다 does not always mean full support. Check what comes after 그러나 or 다만.
  • Choosing an answer with stronger language than the passage: Words like 전혀, 반드시, 완전히, and 항상 are often traps.
  • Missing the object of criticism: The speaker may criticize the method, not the conclusion; or the scope, not the data.
  • Over-focusing on vocabulary: Even if a few academic words are unfamiliar, stance markers can still reveal the answer.

Practice Hub: Scholarly Critique Listening — 50 Questions
Complete all 5 sets. Each set has one track and 10 questions. Answers are hidden in toggles after each set.

Set 1 — Theory critique: digital reading

Track 1
Announcer:

Announcer:

Set 4 — Policy critique: regional festivals

Track 4
Announcer:

Set 5 — Academic debate: artificial intelligence and creativity

Track 5
Announcer:
