💡
TL;DR
  • TOPIK II listening often tests what people really mean, not only what they literally say.
  • Track relationships through tone, hesitation, contrast words, and who benefits or loses.
  • Use the 2-pass method: answer first, then confirm with keywords and discourse markers.
🎧
🎧 Audio Practice
  1. First pass: play each track once without pausing and choose answers quickly.
  1. Second pass: replay and confirm by catching relationship clues, emotional shifts, and hidden intentions.
  1. Optional shadowing: repeat key lines aloud, especially sentences with 그런데, 사실은, 오히려, 그럴 줄 알았어요, and 마음은 이해하지만.

🔑 The Big Picture

Complex character dynamics appear when speakers have mixed motives, indirect disagreement, hidden disappointment, unequal power, or changing trust. In TOPIK II listening, the correct answer is often based on the relationship behind the words: who is cautious, who is disappointed, who is trying to persuade, who is avoiding responsibility, and who changes their attitude.
A speaker may sound polite while disagreeing, supportive while warning someone, or calm while feeling pressured. Your job is to hear not only the factual content but also the psychological direction of the conversation.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Relationship clues

Listen for how speakers address each other and whether they speak formally, casually, cautiously, or directly.
  • Polite endings do not always mean agreement; they may hide discomfort.
  • Repeated questions may show suspicion, pressure, or concern.

2. Psychological clues

TOPIK II often tests emotional states indirectly.

3. Intention clues

A speaker’s intention may be different from the surface meaning.
  • “괜찮아요” may mean true acceptance or reluctant acceptance.
  • “한번 생각해 볼게요” may mean hesitation, not agreement.
  • “네 말도 맞지만…” usually introduces disagreement.
  • “도와주고 싶긴 한데…” usually prepares a refusal or limitation.

4. Turning-point markers

Relationship dynamics often change after discourse markers.
  • 그런데 / 하지만 / 다만: contrast or hidden problem
  • 그러니까 / 결국: conclusion or real point
  • 그래도: concession with remaining disagreement

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Identify the relationship first. Ask: Are they colleagues, friends, supervisor-employee, professor-student, or service provider-customer?
  1. Track emotional movement. Does the speaker become relieved, doubtful, disappointed, persuaded, or defensive?
  1. Separate facts from interpretation. Facts answer “what happened”; dynamics answer “what does it mean between them?”
  1. Watch for polite disagreement. TOPIK II frequently hides refusal inside respectful language.
  1. Use the second pass to verify. Confirm with one or two exact clues rather than relying on general feeling.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Choosing an answer that matches one word but ignores the speaker’s tone.
  • Assuming polite language means a positive relationship.
  • Missing a reversal after 그런데, 사실은, or 오히려.
  • Confusing sympathy with agreement.
  • Ignoring who has responsibility or authority in the situation.

🎧 Listening Scripts

Track 1 — A coworker who feels overlooked

A: 그 말도 맞네요.

Track 2 — A student hiding concern from a professor

Track 3 — A friend giving indirect criticism

A: 알겠어.

Track 4 — A manager trying to persuade a tired employee

Track 5 — A customer and repair technician negotiating responsibility

Customer:
