🔑 The Big Picture

In TOPIK II Listening Q21–22, you are often asked to identify the speaker’s attitude, feeling, or opinion. The topic may be easy to catch, but the answer depends on how the speaker feels about the topic.
For example, if the speaker says, 새 정책은 필요하다고 봅니다. 다만 준비 기간이 너무 짧아 현장에서는 혼란이 예상됩니다, the attitude is not simply “supportive.” It is closer to partly accepting but concerned about implementation.
The key skill is to separate:
  • Topic: what the speaker is talking about
  • Main point: what the speaker wants to say
  • Attitude: how the speaker evaluates the situation

Listen for words that directly reveal judgment.

2. Contrast markers

Contrast often changes the attitude. Pay special attention after these expressions:
  • 하지만, 그런데, 다만, 반면에, 오히려
  • 물론 … 그러나 …
  • 좋기는 하지만 …
  • 필요하긴 한데 …
In many questions, the first sentence gives background, while the sentence after the contrast marker gives the real answer.

3. Sentence endings and tone

Even without strong emotion words, Korean endings can show attitude:
  • -아/어야 합니다, -는 것이 필요합니다 → recommendation, insistence
  • -지 않을까요?, -는 게 아닐까요? → cautious suggestion
  • -다고 보기 어렵습니다 → doubt or disagreement
  • -기 바랍니다 → expectation or request

4. Final sentence priority

TOPIK listening speakers often summarize their stance at the end. If you are unsure, ask:
What is the speaker’s final evaluation?

✅ Exam Strategy

The 2-pass method

  1. First pass: answer without pausing
      • Identify the situation.
      • Choose the attitude that best matches the overall tone.
      • Do not overthink one vocabulary item.
  1. Second pass: confirm with clues
      • Circle contrast markers.
      • Catch final evaluative words.
      • Check whether the answer choice is too extreme, too positive, or about the wrong person.
  1. Optional dictation / shadowing
      • Dictate the last sentence.
      • Shadow sentences with attitude words: 아쉽습니다, 우려됩니다, 기대됩니다, 지켜봐야 합니다.

Fast decision checklist

Before choosing, ask:
  • Is the speaker praising, criticizing, worrying, regretting, doubting, or expecting?
  • Does the speaker fully agree, or agree only partly?
  • Does the final sentence become more positive or more negative?
  • Is the choice describing an emotion, or only repeating the topic?

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Choosing by topic words only

If the script mentions 환경 보호, do not automatically choose a positive attitude. The speaker may be criticizing a poorly designed environmental policy.

Pitfall 2: Missing “yes, but”

필요합니다. 하지만… usually means the speaker recognizes value but is concerned or critical.

Pitfall 3: Overreacting to one negative word

A speaker can mention a problem but still be optimistic: 문제는 있지만 해결 가능성이 큽니다.

Pitfall 4: Confusing attitude and solution

홍보를 강화해야 합니다 is a solution. The attitude may be “concerned about low participation,” not simply “wants publicity.”
