TL;DR
  • In TOPIK II and formal Korean, honorifics are not only grammar; they also depend on role, setting, and word choice.
  • Use subject honorifics for the person being discussed, addressee honorifics for the listener, and humble forms when lowering yourself or your side.
  • In official settings, natural formal vocabulary often sounds more appropriate than simply adding -시- everywhere.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read the key Korean sentences aloud twice: once slowly to notice -시-, 께서, , and formal endings, and once at natural presentation speed. Pay attention to whether the sentence honors the subject, the listener, or both.

🔑 The Big Picture

Advanced honorifics are tested indirectly in TOPIK II through reading, listening, and writing. You may need to recognize who is being respected, choose a sentence that fits an official situation, or avoid awkward over-honorification.
In casual study, learners often memorize forms like 가다 → 가시다 or 먹다 → 드시다. In formal settings, however, the key question is:
Who should be raised, who should be lowered, and what register matches the situation?
Formal Korean usually combines three layers:
  • Subject honorifics: respect the person performing the action.
  • Addressee honorifics: respect the person listening or reading.
  • Humble / formal lexical choice: lower yourself or choose institutionally appropriate wording.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Subject honorifics: respecting the person being discussed

Use subject honorifics when the subject of the sentence deserves respect.
Common markers:
  • 께서 instead of 이/가
  • instead of 에게/한테
  • -시- inside the verb
  • Special honorific verbs: 계시다, 말씀하시다, and 드시다 (not 드드시다)
Examples:
  • 교수님께서 회의에 참석하셨습니다.
    • = The professor attended the meeting.
  • 대표님께서 잠시 후 도착하실 예정입니다.
    • = The CEO is scheduled to arrive shortly.
  • 선생님께서 학생들에게 말씀하셨습니다.
    • = The teacher spoke to the students.

2. Addressee honorifics: respecting the listener

Addressee honorifics appear in sentence endings. In formal announcements, emails, presentations, and TOPIK writing, use formal polite endings.
Common formal endings:
  • -습니다 / -ㅂ니다
  • -습니까?
  • -으십시오 / -십시오
  • -기 바랍니다
  • -아/어 주시기 바랍니다
Examples:
  • 신청서를 작성해 주시기 바랍니다.
    • = Please fill out the application form.
  • 문의 사항이 있으시면 행정실로 연락해 주십시오.
    • = If you have questions, please contact the administrative office.
  • 다음 안내를 확인하시기 바랍니다.
    • = Please check the following notice.

3. Humble forms: lowering yourself or your side

When speaking to a respected person, you often lower yourself, your group, or the action directed toward them.
Useful humble / respectful pairs:
  • 주다 → 드리다: to give to a respected person
  • 묻다 → 여쭙다: to ask a respected person
  • 말하다 → 말씀드리다: to tell a respected person
  • 보다 / 만나다 → 뵙다: to see or meet a respected person
  • 데리고 가다 → 모시고 가다: to accompany a respected person
Examples:
  • 제가 교수님께 자료를 보내 드렸습니다.
    • = I sent the materials to the professor.
  • 궁금한 점을 담당자님께 여쭙겠습니다.
    • = I will ask the staff member about the question.
  • 내일 오전에 다시 찾아뵙겠습니다.
    • = I will visit again tomorrow morning.

4. Formal vocabulary in official settings

In official contexts, choose words that sound institutional, precise, and neutral.
More formal choices:
  • 사람들참석자 / 관계자 / 이용자
  • 알리다안내하다 / 공지하다
  • 물어보다문의하다
  • 도와주다지원하다
  • 고치다수정하다 / 개선하다
  • 돈을 내다납부하다
  • 서류를 내다제출하다
Examples:
  • 참가자는 신분증을 지참하시기 바랍니다.
  • 자세한 내용은 홈페이지를 통해 공지될 예정입니다.
  • 등록비는 5월 10일까지 납부해 주십시오.

5. Do not honor the wrong thing

A common advanced error is attaching honorifics to objects, organizations, or your own side in an unnatural way.
Awkward:
  • 제 선생님께 선물을 주셨습니다.
    • This sounds like “someone respected gave a gift to my teacher,” not “I gave my teacher a gift.”
Better:
  • 제가 선생님께 선물을 드렸습니다.
Awkward:
  • 회사가 고객님께서 연락하셨습니다.
    • The subject marking is confused.
Better:
  • 고객님께서 회사에 연락하셨습니다.
  • 회사에서 고객님께 연락드렸습니다.

✅ Exam Strategy

For TOPIK II reading

When choosing the most appropriate sentence, identify:
  1. Who is the subject? Should that person be honored with 께서 and -시-?
  1. Who is the listener/reader? Does the ending need to be formal polite?
  1. Is the action directed toward a respected person? Use 드리다, 여쭙다, or 뵙다 when needed.
  1. Does the setting sound official? Prefer words like 안내, 문의, 제출, 참석, 확인.

For TOPIK II listening

Honorifics often reveal relationships. Listen for:
  • 께서, , -시-
  • job titles: 교수님, 부장님, 담당자, 고객님
  • formal request endings: -시기 바랍니다, -해 주십시오
  • humble verbs: 말씀드리다, 여쭙다, 뵙다

For TOPIK II writing

Use honorifics carefully but consistently. In a formal essay, report or explain with neutral formal endings:
  • -습니다
  • -다고 할 수 있습니다
  • -는 것이 바람직합니다
  • -을 필요가 있습니다
In emails or notices, use reader-directed formal language:
  • 확인해 주시기 바랍니다
  • 문의해 주십시오
  • 참석해 주시면 감사하겠습니다

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Overusing the honorific marker -시-: Not every noun or action needs honorific marking.
  • Honoring yourself: Avoid raising , 우리 회사, or your own action unless the listener is the subject.
  • Mixing casual and formal endings: -요 may be polite, but official notices usually require -습니다 / -십시오.
  • Using 께서 for objects or institutions: Use it for respected people, not ordinary objects.
  • Choosing dictionary synonyms without register awareness: 물어보다 is fine in conversation, but 문의하다 is better in official writing.
