💡
TL;DR
  • 사실 introduces the truth or correction: “actually / in fact.”
  • 실제로 contrasts an idea with real experience or evidence: “in reality / actually.”
  • 정말로 emphasizes sincerity, degree, or surprise: “really / truly.”
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read each Korean example aloud twice. On the first read, notice the adverb. On the second read, say the sentence naturally and slightly stress the adverb to feel its meaning.

🔑 The Big Picture

Logical adverbs help a sentence show truth, reality, emphasis, or confirmation. In TOPIK I reading and listening, these words often decide the correct answer because they change the speaker’s attitude.
The four target words are close in English, but they are not identical.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. 사실 = “The fact is…” / “Actually…”

Use 사실 when the speaker reveals, corrects, or explains the true situation.
  • 저는 사실 매운 음식을 잘 못 먹어요.
    • → Actually, I cannot eat spicy food well.
  • 사실 그 사람은 제 동생이에요.
    • → In fact, that person is my younger sibling.
  • 이 가방은 비싸 보여요. 하지만 사실 싸요.
    • → This bag looks expensive. But actually, it is cheap.
Common patterns:
  • 사실 + sentence
  • 하지만 사실 + opposite/correction
  • 사실은 + sentence: slightly stronger “the truth is…”

2. 실제로 = “In reality / in actual experience”

Use 실제로 when comparing a thought, plan, rumor, or expectation with real life.
  • 사진으로는 작아 보여요. 실제로는 커요.
    • → It looks small in the photo. In reality, it is big.
  • 한국어가 어려울 것 같았어요. 실제로 공부해 보니 재미있어요.
    • → I thought Korean would be difficult. After actually studying it, it is fun.
  • 이 식당은 유명해요. 실제로 음식도 맛있어요.
    • → This restaurant is famous. In reality, the food is also delicious.
Common patterns:
  • 실제로는 + real result
  • 실제로 + verb
  • 생각보다 실제로 + adjective

3. 정말로 = “Really / truly”

Use 정말로 to strongly emphasize truth, feeling, degree, or sincerity.
  • 오늘 날씨가 정말로 좋아요.
    • → The weather is really good today.
  • 저는 정말로 미안해요.
    • → I am truly sorry.
  • 이 이야기가 정말로 사실이에요?
    • → Is this story really true?
Common patterns:
  • 정말로 + adjective/verb
  • 정말로 감사합니다 / 죄송합니다 / 미안합니다
  • 정말로 + question? for surprise or confirmation

4. 과연 = “Indeed / as expected / I wonder if”

과연 is more advanced than the other three. In TOPIK I, recognize it mainly in two meanings.
A. Confirmation after expectation: “indeed / as expected”
  • 그 학생은 매일 공부했어요. 과연 시험을 잘 봤어요.
    • → The student studied every day. As expected, they did well on the test.
  • 모두가 그 식당을 좋아해요. 과연 음식이 맛있었어요.
    • → Everyone likes that restaurant. Indeed, the food was delicious.
B. Wondering or doubt in a question: “really / I wonder if”
  • 과연 그 사람이 올까요?
    • → I wonder if that person will really come.
  • 과연 이 문제가 쉬울까요?
    • → I wonder if this question is really easy.

Quick contrast

  • 사실: corrects or reveals the truth.
  • 실제로: proves what happens in real life.
  • 정말로: makes the feeling or statement stronger.
  • 과연: confirms expectation or shows doubt/wonder.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Look for contrast words. If you see 하지만, 그런데, 보기에는, 사진으로는, 생각보다, the answer may be 사실 or 실제로.
  1. Find the speaker’s purpose.
      • Revealing truth → 사실
      • Comparing expectation and reality → 실제로
      • Emphasizing feeling or degree → 정말로
      • Confirming expectation or wondering → 과연
  1. Do not translate every “actually” the same way.
      • “Actually, I’m a student” → 사실
      • “It is actually bigger in real life” → 실제로
  1. In listening, catch the sentence before the adverb. The previous sentence often gives the reason for the adverb.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not use 정말로 when you need a correction.
    • 자연스러운 문장: 사실 저는 학생이 아니에요.
    • 어색한 문장: 정말로 저는 학생이 아니에요.
  • Do not use 실제로 for a simple personal confession unless real-life evidence or experience is important.
    • 자연스러운 문장: 사실 저는 커피를 안 좋아해요.
    • 가능하지만 뜻이 다름: 실제로 저는 커피를 안 좋아해요.
  • 과연 is not a general word for “very.” It usually needs expectation, confirmation, doubt, or a question.
  • 사실 and 실제로 can both mean “actually,” but 사실 points to truth, while 실제로 points to real-world experience.
