TL;DR
  • 성공하다 means to succeed, and 실패하다 means to fail.
  • 이루다 means to achieve something important, such as a dream or goal.
  • 포기하다 means to give up; TOPIK I often contrasts it with trying again or working hard.

🎧 Helper Note
Read the key words aloud in pairs: 성공하다 / 실패하다, 이루다 / 포기하다. Then read each example sentence with the feeling of the result.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I stories often describe simple goals: passing a test, learning Korean, finding a job, winning a game, saving money, or finishing a plan. To understand these texts, you need vocabulary for success, failure, effort, and giving up.
This lesson focuses on:
  • 성공 / 성공하다 = success / to succeed
  • 실패 / 실패하다 = failure / to fail
  • 이루다 = to achieve, fulfill
  • 포기하다 = to give up

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. 성공하다 = to succeed

Use 성공하다 when a goal or attempt works.
Examples:
    • I succeeded on the exam.
    • They succeeded in dieting.
Common pattern:
  • N에 성공하다

2. 실패하다 = to fail

Use 실패하다 when a goal or attempt does not work.
Examples:
    • I failed the first test.
    • I failed at cooking, but made it again.
Common pattern:
  • N에 실패하다

3. 이루다 = to achieve

Use 이루다 with big goals, dreams, plans, and hopes.
Examples:
    • I want to achieve my dream.
    • If you want to achieve your goal, you must work hard.

4. 포기하다 = to give up

Use 포기하다 when someone stops trying.
Examples:
    • It was difficult, but I did not give up.
    • I gave up the game because I did not have time.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Look for result words: 성공, 실패, 결국, 드디어.
  1. Look for effort words: 노력하다, 연습하다, 열심히, 다시.
  1. Watch contrast markers:
      • -지만 = failed but tried again
      • 그래서 = reason/result
      • 결국 = final result
  1. If the passage says someone did not give up, the ending is often positive.
  1. If the passage says someone gave up, the result may be incomplete or negative.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • 이루다 is usually used with a dream/goal, not a small object.
    • Natural:
    • Awkward:
  • 포기하다 means stop trying, not simply “rest.”
  • Do not assume failure is final. TOPIK passages often show failure → effort → success.

✅ Final Review

For TOPIK I passages about goals, follow the result chain: goal → effort → failure or success → next action. If someone fails but does not give up, expect a hopeful or successful ending.
