TL;DR
  • Learn TOPIK I shopping words for objects, stores, prices, quantities, and payment.

🎧 Helper Note: Read the Korean item words aloud in pairs: 가방/지갑, 바지/치마, 우유/물, 싸요/비싸요. TOPIK I listening and reading often test small sound or meaning differences.

You do not need advanced business vocabulary. You need fast recognition of common words and expressions used in a store, market, convenience store, or department store.

🧠
TOPIK I shortcut: If you see , expect . If you see , expect . If you see 커피, expect . If you see 신발 or 양말, expect 켤레.

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1: Underline the item word

In reading questions, first find the object: 가방, 우산, , 우유, 신발.

Step 2: Check the store

The place often confirms the answer:
  • 서점 → 책, 공책, 펜
  • 마트 → 우유, 과일, 빵
  • 편의점 → 물, 과자, 커피
  • 백화점 → 옷, 가방, 신발

Step 3: Watch price and opinion words

TOPIK I distractors often reverse:
  • 싸요 ↔ 비싸요
  • 커요 ↔ 작아요
  • 좋아요 ↔ 안 좋아요
  • 있어요 ↔ 없어요

Step 4: Listen for quantity

A wrong answer may have the correct item but wrong number.
  • 물 두 병 ≠ 물 세 병
  • 책 한 권 ≠ 책 두 권

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Confusing similar personal items

  • 가방 = bag
  • 지갑 = wallet
  • 모자 = hat
  • 우산 = umbrella

Pitfall 2: Forgetting counters

Wrong: 책 세 개
Better for TOPIK: 책 세 권
Wrong: 신발 두 개
Better for TOPIK: 신발 두 켤레

Pitfall 3: Choosing the item you personally expect

Do not answer from real life. Answer only from the sentence.
  • “서점” usually suggests books, but the sentence may say: 서점에서 펜을 샀어요.
  • The answer is , not 책.

Pitfall 4: Missing negative expressions

  • 없어요 = there is not / do not have
  • 안 사요 = do not buy
  • 필요 없어요 = do not need

  1. Place: Where is the person buying it?
  1. Price/opinion: Is it cheap, expensive, big, small, good, or not good?
  1. Quantity: Which counter and number are used?
Mastery goal: When you see a short shopping sentence, identify the item, place, price, and quantity in under 10 seconds.
TL;DR
  • Learn the TOPIK I shopping words that appear in stores, markets, prices, receipts, and simple dialogues.

✅ Exam Strategy

What TOPIK I usually checks

  1. Object identification
      • Listen for nouns: 사과, 우유, 책, 가방, 신발
      • Match the noun to the correct picture or answer choice.
  1. Price
      • Listen carefully to numbers before .
      • Watch for similar-sounding prices: 천 원, 삼천 원, 만 원.
  1. Quantity
      • Listen for counters: , , , 켤레.
      • The object and counter must match the situation.
  1. Buyer intention
      • 주세요 usually means the person will buy or receive something.
      • 너무 비싸요 may mean the person will not buy it.
  1. Place
      • 책, 공책, 연필 → 서점 or 문구점
      • 약, 감기약 → 약국
      • 사과, 우유, 빵 → 마트 or 시장

Fast solving method

  • Step 1: Identify the place.
  • Step 2: Identify the item.
  • Step 3: Catch the number + counter.
  • Step 4: Catch the price.
  • Step 5: Decide whether the person buys it, asks about it, or refuses it.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Confusing item and place

  • 서점 is a bookstore, not a book.
  • 시장 is a market, not a thing someone buys.

Pitfall 2: Missing counters

  • 사과 두 개 = two apples
  • 물 두 병 = two bottles of water
  • 책 두 권 = two books
The number alone is not enough; the counter tells you what kind of item is counted.

Pitfall 3: Mixing up 싸다 and 사다

  • 싸다 = cheap
  • 사다 = to buy
They sound similar, but the meaning is very different.

Pitfall 4: Assuming “want” means “buy”

  • 사고 싶어요 = I want to buy it.
  • 샀어요 = I bought it.
  • 살 거예요 = I will buy it.
TOPIK choices may separate intention, past action, and future action.

Pitfall 5: Ignoring negative clues

  • 너무 비싸요. = It is too expensive.
  • 돈이 없어요. = I do not have money.
  • 안 살 거예요. = I will not buy it.
These clues often change the correct answer.

🧭 Final Review

For TOPIK I shopping questions, listen or read for four things:
  • Item: 사과, 우유, 책, 가방, 신발
  • Quantity: 개, 병, 권, 켤레
  • Price: 원, 얼마예요?
  • Decision: 주세요, 살게요, 안 살게요, 너무 비싸요
If you can connect these cues quickly, most daily-object and shopping questions become predictable.
