🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I uses communication and media verbs in short conversations, notices, schedules, text messages, and simple reading passages. These verbs are high-frequency because they describe practical daily actions: calling someone, sending a message, watching news, checking a website, or looking up information.
The main exam skill is not memorizing one English translation. It is matching the Korean verb to the correct object, person, tool, or situation.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) 연락하다 = contact someone

Use 연락하다 when the method of contact is general or when calling, texting, or emailing are all possible.
  • 친구에게 연락해요. = I contact a friend.
  • 문제가 있으면 사무실에 연락하세요. = If there is a problem, contact the office.
  • 나중에 다시 연락할게요. = I will contact you again later.
Common patterns:
  • 사람에게/한테 연락하다
  • 선생님께 연락하다
  • 회사/병원/사무실에 연락하다
  • 전화로/문자로/이메일로 연락하다

2) 전화하다, 전화를 걸다, 전화를 받다

전화하다 and 전화를 걸다 mean to make a phone call. 전화를 받다 means to answer/receive a call.
  • 어머니께 전화했어요. = I called my mother.
  • 친구에게 전화를 걸었어요. = I made a call to my friend.
  • 수업 중이라 전화를 못 받았어요. = I could not answer the phone because I was in class.
TOPIK distractor:
  • 전화를 해요/걸어요 = make a call
  • 전화를 받아요 = answer/receive a call

3) 문자하다 / 문자를 보내다 / 문자를 받다

TOPIK I often uses 문자 as a noun with 보내다 or 받다.
  • 친구에게 문자를 보내요. = I send a text to a friend.
  • 방금 문자를 받았어요. = I just received a text.
  • 늦으면 문자해 주세요. = Please text me if you are late.

4) 시청하다 vs 보다

Both can mean “watch,” but 시청하다 is more formal and is mainly used with media content.
  • 뉴스를 시청합니다. = I watch the news.
  • 텔레비전을 시청해요. = I watch television.
  • 영화를 봐요. = I watch a movie.
Use 보다 for general seeing/watching. Do not use 시청하다 for people.
  • Natural: 친구를 봐요. / 친구에게 연락해요.
  • Unnatural: 친구를 시청해요.

5) 검색하다 vs 찾다

검색하다 means to search or look something up, usually using the internet, a phone, a website, a map app, or a computer. 찾다 is broader: to look for or find.
  • 인터넷에서 주소를 검색했어요. = I searched for the address online.
  • 휴대폰으로 길을 검색해요. = I search for directions with my phone.
  • 잃어버린 지갑을 찾아요. = I look for my lost wallet.

6) 확인하다 = check/confirm

Use 확인하다 when checking a time, date, reservation, message, email, notice, or fact.
  • 이메일을 확인해요. = I check email.
  • 시험 날짜를 확인하세요. = Please check the exam date.
  • 예약을 확인했어요. = I confirmed the reservation.

✅ Exam Strategy

1) Find the object first

The noun before 을/를 usually tells you the answer.
  • 뉴스 / 프로그램 / 동영상 / 텔레비전 → 시청하다 / 보다
  • 정보 / 주소 / 단어 / 길 / 시간 → 검색하다 / 확인하다
  • 문자 / 이메일 → 보내다 / 받다 / 확인하다
  • 전화 → 전화하다 / 걸다 / 받다
  • 친구 / 가족 / 선생님 / 회사 / 병원 → 연락하다 / 전화하다

2) Watch particles

Communication verbs often mark the person with 에게/한테/께.
  • 친구에게 연락해요.
  • 선생님께 전화했어요.
  • 동생에게 문자를 보냈어요.
Objects usually take 을/를.
  • 뉴스를 시청해요.
  • 정보를 검색해요.
  • 이메일을 확인해요.
Places/platforms often take 에서.
  • 인터넷에서 검색해요.
  • 홈페이지에서 확인하세요.
  • 앱에서 시간을 확인했어요.

3) Separate method from action

A sentence may include the method and the action together.
  • 문자로 연락해 주세요. = Please contact me by text.
  • 전화로 예약했어요. = I made a reservation by phone.
  • 휴대폰으로 검색했어요. = I searched with my phone.

4) Expect polite instructions in notices

TOPIK I notices often use -(으)세요, -아/어 주세요, or formal -ㅂ니다/습니다.
  • 문의가 있으면 연락하세요.
  • 수업 전에 영상을 시청하세요.
  • 자세한 내용은 홈페이지에서 확인해 주세요.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Confusing 연락하다 and 검색하다

연락하다 is for contacting people or organizations. 검색하다 is for looking up information.
  • Correct: 친구에게 연락해요.
  • Correct: 인터넷에서 주소를 검색해요.
  • Incorrect: 친구에게 검색해요.
  • Incorrect: 주소에 연락해요.

Pitfall 2: Using 시청하다 for non-media objects

시청하다 is for TV, news, videos, programs, or broadcasts.
  • Correct: 뉴스를 시청해요.
  • Correct: 동영상을 시청해요.
  • Incorrect: 선생님을 시청해요.
  • Incorrect: 이메일을 시청해요.

Pitfall 3: Confusing send and receive

Direction matters.
  • 제가 문자를 보냈어요. = I sent a text.
  • 제가 문자를 받았어요. = I received a text.
  • 친구가 저에게 문자를 보냈어요. = My friend sent me a text.

Pitfall 4: Choosing only from English translation

English “watch,” “see,” “look,” “search,” and “find” can overlap. TOPIK questions usually give Korean clues:
  • 인터넷에서 → 검색하다
  • 뉴스를 → 시청하다
  • 친구에게 → 연락하다
  • 이메일을 → 보내다 / 받다 / 확인하다

Pitfall 5: Forgetting formal alternatives

In conversation, 보다 and 찾아보다 are common. In notices and informational passages, 시청하다, 검색하다, and 확인하다 may appear more often.
