TL;DR
  • -고 is the basic, flexible connector for “and / and then.”
  • -(으)며 is more formal and written; it often lists qualities, facts, or parallel actions.
  • On TOPIK I, choose -(으)며 when the sentence sounds like an announcement, notice, description, or formal reading passage.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read the Korean example sentences aloud. Pay attention to how -고 sounds natural in everyday speech, while -(으)며 sounds more formal and polished.

🔑 The Big Picture

Both -고 and -(으)며 can connect two clauses with the meaning “and.” The difference is mostly style, register, and sentence purpose.
  • -고 is common in conversation and basic writing.
  • -(으)며 is common in formal writing, notices, descriptions, introductions, and TOPIK reading passages.
  • -(으)며 often presents two facts as balanced or parallel.
Compare:
  • 이 가게는 싸고 맛있어요.
    • → This shop is cheap and tasty. Natural everyday style.
  • 이 가게는 가격이 저렴하며 음식이 맛있습니다.
    • → This shop is reasonably priced and the food is tasty. More formal written style.
For TOPIK I, the main skill is not producing advanced essays. The skill is recognizing which connector fits the tone and sentence structure.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Forming -고

Attach -고 directly to the verb or adjective stem.
  • 크다 → 크고
  • 작다 → 작고
  • 먹다 → 먹고
  • 가다 → 가고
Examples:
  • 방이 크고 깨끗해요.
    • → The room is big and clean.
  • 저는 밥을 먹고 학교에 갔어요.
    • → I ate and went to school.

2. Forming -(으)며

Use -으며 after a consonant-ending stem. Use -며 after a vowel-ending stem or ㄹ-ending stem.
  • 작다 → 작으며
  • 먹다 → 먹으며
  • 크다 → 크며
  • 가다 → 가며
  • 살다 → 살며
Examples:
  • 이 방은 조용하며 깨끗합니다.
    • → This room is quiet and clean.
  • 학생들은 노래를 부르며 춤을 춥니다.
    • → The students sing and dance. / The students dance while singing.

3. Noun pattern: N이며

When listing nouns in formal style, use N이며.
  • 여기는 도서관이며 학생들이 공부하는 곳입니다.
    • → This is a library and a place where students study.
  • 제 취미는 독서이며 음악 감상입니다.
    • → My hobbies are reading and listening to music.

4. Meaning difference in simple terms

-(으)며

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1: Check the sentence ending

If the sentence ends in -습니다 / -ㅂ니다 / -입니다, the style is formal. -(으)며 may fit well.
  • 이 제품은 가볍___ 사용하기 쉽습니다.
    • → 가벼우며

Step 2: Check if the sentence lists facts or qualities

When two descriptions are presented equally, -(으)며 is often natural.
  • 서울은 한국의 수도___ 많은 사람이 살고 있습니다.
    • → 수도이며

Step 3: Use -고 for everyday action chains

When the sentence simply says “do A and do B,” especially in casual style, choose -고.
  • 친구를 만나___ 영화를 봤어요.
    • → 만나고

Step 4: Watch for formal nouns and public information

TOPIK I reading often uses formal descriptions about places, people, rules, schedules, and services. These are good places to expect -(으)며 / N이며.
  • 이곳은 은행___ 우체국도 가까이 있습니다.
    • → 은행이며

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Thinking -(으)며 is always “while”

-(으)며 can mean “while,” but in TOPIK I formal descriptions it often means “and.”
  • 그는 웃으며 말했습니다.
    • → He spoke while smiling.
  • 이 가방은 가볍고 튼튼합니다. / 이 가방은 가벼우며 튼튼합니다.
    • → This bag is light and strong.

Pitfall 2: Using -(으)며 in very casual speech

In daily conversation, -고 is usually more natural.
  • 자연스러움: 오늘은 춥고 비가 와요.
  • 너무 딱딱함: 오늘은 추우며 비가 옵니다.

Pitfall 3: Forgetting the stem rule

  • 받침 있음: 먹다 → 먹으며
  • 받침 없음: 가다 → 가며
  • ㄹ 받침: 살다 → 살며

Pitfall 4: Putting tense on every connected verb

In many connected sentences, tense appears mainly at the final verb.
  • 자연스러움: 밥을 먹고 학교에 갔어요.
  • 어색함: 밥을 먹었고 학교에 갔어요.
    • → Possible in some contexts, but usually unnecessary for simple TOPIK I action chains.

🧠 Quick Review

Use -고 when the sentence is simple, conversational, or sequential. Use -(으)며 when the sentence is formal, written, and balanced. In TOPIK I reading, sentence endings like -습니다 and topics like places, products, schools, cities, and public information often signal that -(으)며 is a strong choice.
