💡
TL;DR
  • Use -(으)니까 to give a reason that supports a judgment, request, suggestion, or next action.
  • Attach -으니까 after most consonant-ending stems and -니까 after vowel-ending stems.
  • In TOPIK I, watch for command/suggestion sentences: -(으)니까 is usually safer than -아/어서.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read each Korean example aloud twice: first naturally, then slowly while marking the reason before -(으)니까 and the result after it.

🔑 The Big Picture

-(으)니까 means “because / since / now that…”, but its TOPIK value is more specific: it often gives a reason that justifies what the speaker thinks, asks, suggests, or decides next.
  • 날씨가 추우니까 따뜻하게 입으세요.
  • Because the weather is cold, dress warmly.
  • 시간이 없으니까 택시를 탑시다.
  • Since we do not have time, let’s take a taxi.
  • 이 가게는 사람이 많으니까 음식이 맛있을 거예요.
  • Since this restaurant has many people, the food is probably good.
For TOPIK I, this pattern appears often in short dialogues, advice, requests, and reason-result questions.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic form

Stem ending
Pattern
Example
Consonant
-으니까
먹다 → 먹으니까
Vowel
-니까
가다 → 가니까
ㄹ-ending stem
Drop ㄹ + -니까
살다 → 사니까, 만들다 → 만드니까

2. Verb, adjective, and 있다/없다

  • Verb: 비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요.
  • Adjective: 방이 작으니까 책상이 하나만 있어요.
  • 있다/없다: 시간이 없으니까 빨리 갑시다.

3. Past tense is possible

Use the tense before -(으)니까 when the reason happened in the past.
  • 숙제를 다 했으니까 쉬어도 돼요.
  • Since I finished all the homework, I can rest.
  • 어제 많이 걸었으니까 오늘은 피곤해요.
  • Since I walked a lot yesterday, I am tired today.

4. Why not always -아/어서?

-아/어서 is also “because,” but it is not normally used before direct commands or suggestions.
  • Natural: 늦었으니까 빨리 가세요.
  • Awkward for this function: 늦어서 빨리 가세요.
Use -(으)니까 when the second clause is:
  • a command: 가세요, 보세요, 하지 마세요
  • a suggestion: 갑시다, 먹을까요?
  • advice or judgment: 좋겠어요, 괜찮을 거예요

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Look at the second clause first.
  2. If it is a command, request, suggestion, or speaker judgment, -(으)니까 is likely correct.
  3. Check the stem ending.
  4. Consonant → -으니까; vowel → -니까; ㄹ often drops before 니까.
  5. Match the logic.
  6. The first clause must be a reason, and the second clause must be a reasonable result.
  7. Do not translate mechanically.
  8. In English, both -아/어서 and -(으)니까 can be “because.” In TOPIK, grammar function matters more than English translation.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Pitfall 1: Using -아/어서 before commands.
  • Use -(으)니까: 길이 복잡하니까 지하철을 타세요.
  • Pitfall 2: Forgetting 으 after consonants.
  • 많다 → 많으니까, not 많니까.
  • Pitfall 3: Keeping ㄹ before 니까.
  • 멀다 → 머니까, 살다 → 사니까.
  • Pitfall 4: Choosing a sentence with weak logic.
  • 배가 고프니까 밥을 먹어요 is logical. 배가 고프니까 책을 읽어요 is not a strong TOPIK-style reason-result pair.
