TL;DR
- Use 으로 after most consonants, but 로 after a vowel or ㄹ.
- Direction meaning answers “toward where?”: 학교로 가요, 오른쪽으로 가세요.
- Method/tool meaning answers “by/with what?”: 버스로 가요, 연필로 써요.
🎧 Helper Note: Read the key Korean examples aloud. Pay attention to whether (으)로 attaches to a place word, direction word, vehicle, tool, or material.
🔑 The Big Picture
(으)로 is a high-frequency TOPIK I particle. It often looks simple, but test questions use it in two very common ways:
- Direction: movement toward a place or direction
- Method / means / tool: how something is done, or what is used
The same form can mean different things depending on the noun before it and the verb after it.
Meaning | Question it answers | Common nouns | Example |
Direction | Where toward? | 학교, 집, 오른쪽, 왼쪽, 앞으로 | 학교로 가요. = I go toward/to school. |
Method / means | How? By what? | 버스, 지하철, 택시, 전화 | 버스로 가요. = I go by bus. |
Tool | With what? | 펜, 연필, 칼, 가위 | 펜으로 써요. = I write with a pen. |
Material | Made of what? | 나무, 종이, 유리 | 나무로 만들어요. = I make it with wood. |
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1) Form rule: N + (으)로
Use 으로 after most final consonants.
- 집 → 집으로
- 한국 → 한국으로
- 연필 → 연필로? Wait: ㄹ exception applies.
Use 로 after a vowel or final ㄹ.
- 학교 → 학교로
- 버스 → 버스로
- 지하철 → 지하철로
- 서울 → 서울로
Quick form rule
- Consonant 받침: 으로
- Vowel: 로
- ㄹ 받침: 로
2) Direction: N + (으)로 가다 / 오다 / 들어가다 / 나가다
Use (으)로 when the sentence focuses on the direction or route of movement.
- 학교로 가요. = I go toward/to school.
- 집으로 와요. = Come home.
- 오른쪽으로 가세요. = Please go to the right.
- 앞으로 오세요. = Please come forward.
TOPIK clue: Place/direction noun + movement verb usually signals direction.
3) Method / means: N + (으)로 가다 / 오다 / 보내다 / 말하다
Use (으)로 when the noun is the method, transportation, language, or communication channel.
- 버스로 학교에 가요. = I go to school by bus.
- 지하철로 와요. = I come by subway.
- 이메일로 보내요. = I send it by email.
- 한국어로 말해요. = I speak in Korean.
TOPIK clue: Vehicle/tool/language + action verb usually signals method.
4) Tool: N + (으)로 쓰다 / 자르다 / 먹다 / 열다
Use (으)로 for the physical tool used to do an action.
- 연필로 써요. = I write with a pencil.
- 가위로 종이를 잘라요. = I cut paper with scissors.
- 숟가락으로 먹어요. = I eat with a spoon.
- 열쇠로 문을 열어요. = I open the door with a key.
5) Direction vs. method with the same verb
The verb 가다 can appear with both meanings.
- 학교로 가요. = I go toward/to school. (direction)
- 버스로 가요. = I go by bus. (method)
- 학교에 버스로 가요. = I go to school by bus. (destination + method)
TOPIK often tests whether you understand the noun category, not just the verb.
✅ Exam Strategy
Step 1: Identify the noun before (으)로
Ask: Is it a place/direction or a tool/method/vehicle?
- Place/direction: 집, 학교, 회사, 오른쪽, 왼쪽, 앞으로
- Method/vehicle/tool: 버스, 지하철, 택시, 연필, 펜, 전화, 이메일
Step 2: Check the verb
Movement verbs often combine with direction.
- 가다, 오다, 들어가다, 나가다, 올라가다, 내려가다
Action verbs often combine with tools or methods.
- 쓰다, 자르다, 만들다, 보내다, 말하다, 먹다
Step 3: Do not translate too mechanically
English “to,” “by,” “with,” and “in” may all match (으)로 depending on context.
- 한국어로 말해요. = speak in Korean
- 버스로 가요. = go by bus
- 연필로 써요. = write with a pencil
- 오른쪽으로 가요. = go to/toward the right
Step 4: Use 에 for fixed destination when needed
For simple destination, 에 is also common.
- 학교에 가요. = I go to school.
- 학교로 가요. = I go toward/to school.
At TOPIK I level, 에 often marks a destination, while (으)로 can emphasize direction, route, or movement toward something.
⚠️ Pitfalls
Pitfall 1: Forgetting the ㄹ exception
Incorrect: 지하철으로 가요.
Correct: 지하철로 가요.
Incorrect: 서울으로 가요.
Correct: 서울로 가요.
Pitfall 2: Confusing direction with transportation
- 학교로 가요. = direction/place
- 버스로 가요. = method/transportation
Both use 가요, so the noun decides the meaning.
Pitfall 3: Using (으)로 for every “to”
Do not use (으)로 automatically whenever English has “to.”
- 친구에게 전화해요. = I call my friend.
- 친구한테 줘요. = I give it to my friend.
- 학교에 가요. = I go to school.
(으)로 is especially common for direction, route, method, tool, material, or language.
Pitfall 4: Missing natural TOPIK pairings
Memorize common pairs:
- 오른쪽으로 가세요
- 왼쪽으로 가세요
- 집으로 돌아가요
- 버스로 가요
- 지하철로 와요
- 연필로 써요
- 한국어로 말해요
- 이메일로 보내요

Before choosing an answer on TOPIK I, ask three quick questions:
- Does the noun end in a vowel, consonant, or ㄹ?
- Is the noun a place/direction or a tool/method?
- Does the verb describe movement or an action done with something?
If you can answer those three questions, (으)로 becomes much easier to recognize and use correctly.
