🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I often asks about approximate time, place, price, number, duration, and degree. Korean commonly uses 쯤 and 정도 when the speaker does not need an exact answer.
Both can sometimes translate as “about” or “around,” but they are not always used in the same structure.
  • 쯤 usually points to an approximate time/place/point.
    • 3시쯤 = around 3 o’clock
    • 여기쯤 = around here
    • 언제쯤 = around when
  • 정도 usually describes an approximate amount/duration/price/level.
    • 30분 정도 = about 30 minutes
    • 오천 원 정도 = about 5,000 won
    • 이 정도 = this much / this level

Use 쯤 after the word that marks the approximate point.

  • 쯤 often attaches directly: 3시쯤, 여기쯤, 언제쯤

1) Check the word before the blank

TOPIK I grammar questions often become easy if you look left of the blank.
  • 저는 7시___ 일어나요. → clock time → 쯤
  • 학교까지 20분 ___ 걸려요. → duration → 정도
  • 도서관 앞___에서 만나요. → approximate place → 쯤
  • 이 책은 만 원 ___예요. → price → 정도

2) Do not choose only from the English word “about”

Both 쯤 and 정도 can mean “about.” The Korean structure matters more than the English translation.

3) Watch exact vs approximate information

If a passage says 3시쯤, the time is approximate. A choice that says “exactly 3:00” may be too strong.

4) Memorize common question chunks

  • 몇 시쯤 = around what time
  • 언제쯤 = around when
  • 어디쯤 = around where
  • 얼마 정도 = about how much
  • 어느 정도 = to what degree / somewhat

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Using 쯤 for every “about”

Not every “about” should be 쯤.
  • Natural: 이 정도면 충분해요. = This much is enough.
  • Different meaning: 이쯤이면 충분해요. can mean “around this point/time is enough.”

Pitfall 2: Using 정도 for simple approximate place

For an approximate location, 쯤 is usually clearer.
  • Natural: 역 앞쯤에서 만나요.
  • Less natural for TOPIK I place-point use: 역 앞 정도에서 만나요.

Pitfall 3: Missing the difference between time point and duration

  • Time point: 3시쯤 만나요. = Meet around 3.
  • Duration: 3시간 정도 공부해요. = Study for about 3 hours.

Pitfall 4: Reading approximate information as exact

  • 열 명 정도 있어요 = about ten people, not exactly ten.
