TL;DR
  • 벌써 means “already” with surprise or earlier-than-expected feeling.
  • 이미 means “already” as a neutral completed fact.
  • 아직 means “still / yet,” and 여전히 means “still unchanged.”
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read each Korean example aloud twice. Pay special attention to where the time adverb appears before the verb phrase: 벌써 왔어요, 이미 끝났어요, 아직 안 했어요, 여전히 좋아해요.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I often tests time adverbs through short dialogues, everyday situations, and sentence completion. These words look simple, but they carry different meanings:
  • 벌써 = already, often with surprise
  • 이미 = already, a completed fact
  • 아직 = still / yet, often with negative verbs
  • 여전히 = still, unchanged over time
The key is not only the English meaning. You must notice the emotion, completion, and change in the sentence.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. 벌써 = already, sooner than expected

Use 벌써 when something happened earlier than expected or when the speaker feels surprised.
  • 벌써 10시예요.
    • It is already 10 o’clock.
    • Feeling: Time passed faster than expected.
  • 민수가 벌써 집에 갔어요.
    • Minsu already went home.
    • Feeling: The speaker did not expect it so soon.
Common pattern:
  • 벌써 + past tense
    • 벌써 먹었어요.
    • 벌써 끝났어요.
    • 벌써 왔어요.

2. 이미 = already, completed fact

Use 이미 when something is already done or already true. It is more neutral than 벌써 and often appears in written or formal explanations.
  • 표가 이미 매진됐어요.
    • The tickets are already sold out.
  • 저는 이미 알고 있어요.
    • I already know.
Common pattern:
  • 이미 + past tense / completed state
    • 이미 시작했어요.
    • 이미 결정했어요.
    • 이미 끝났습니다.

3. 아직 = still / yet

Use 아직 when something continues up to now or has not happened yet.
With negative verbs, 아직 means “not yet.”
  • 아직 안 먹었어요.
    • I have not eaten yet.
  • 숙제를 아직 못 했어요.
    • I could not do the homework yet.
With positive descriptive verbs, 아직 can mean “still.”
  • 아직 추워요.
    • It is still cold.
  • 동생은 아직 어려요.
    • My younger sibling is still young.
Common patterns:
  • 아직 + 안 / 못 + verb
  • 아직 + adjective
  • 아직도 can emphasize “still,” especially when the situation feels long or unexpected.

4. 여전히 = still unchanged

Use 여전히 when something remains the same even after time passes. It is common in reading and more formal Korean.
  • 그는 여전히 바빠요.
    • They are still busy.
  • 이 식당은 여전히 인기가 많아요.
    • This restaurant is still popular.
Common pattern:
  • 여전히 + adjective / state verb
    • 여전히 좋아요.
    • 여전히 어렵습니다.
    • 여전히 사람이 많아요.

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1. Check the verb tense

  • Past tense often matches 벌써 or 이미.
    • 벌써 끝났어요.
    • 이미 샀어요.
  • Negative forms often match 아직.
    • 아직 안 갔어요.
    • 아직 못 봤어요.

Step 2. Check the speaker’s feeling

If the sentence sounds surprised, choose 벌써.
  • 벌써 시간이 이렇게 됐어요.
  • 벌써 다 먹었어요.
If the sentence simply reports a finished fact, choose 이미.
  • 회의는 이미 시작됐습니다.
  • 표는 이미 없습니다.

Step 3. Check whether the situation changed

If the sentence means “the same as before,” choose 여전히.
  • 지금도 여전히 춥습니다.
  • 그 가게는 여전히 유명합니다.

Step 4. In TOPIK I dialogues, listen for contrast

A common pattern is:
  • A: 숙제 했어요?
  • B: 아니요, 아직 안 했어요.
Another common pattern is:
  • A: 영화가 시작했어요?
  • B: 네, 이미 시작했어요.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1. Using 이미 for surprise

벌써 is better when the speaker is surprised.
  • Natural: 벌써 12시예요?
  • Less natural for surprise: 이미 12시예요?

Pitfall 2. Forgetting the negative after 아직

For “not yet,” use 아직 + 안 / 못.
  • Correct: 아직 안 먹었어요.
  • Incorrect: 아직 먹었어요.
    • This means “I still eat” or sounds incomplete depending on context.

Pitfall 3. Confusing 아직 and 여전히

Both can mean “still,” but their feeling is different.
  • 아직 어려요.
    • The person is still young; the state has not reached a later stage.
  • 여전히 어려워요.
    • It is still difficult; the difficulty has not changed.

Pitfall 4. Treating 벌써 and 이미 as always interchangeable

Sometimes both are possible, but the nuance changes.
  • 벌써 끝났어요.
    • It ended already, surprisingly early.
  • 이미 끝났어요.
    • It has already ended; that is the fact.
