These words overlap, but they are not always interchangeable. TOPIK I usually expects you to notice the noun before the verb.

1. 고치다: the basic and flexible word

고치다 is the most common and flexible word. It can mean fixing a broken object or correcting something wrong.

  • 시계를 고치다 = fix a watch/clock

  • 문제를 고치다 = correct a problem
  • 나쁜 습관을 고치다 = fix/change a bad habit
  • 틀린 문장을 고치다 = correct a wrong sentence

2. 수리하다: repair an object or facility

수리하다 is often used for machines, vehicles, electronics, furniture, houses, and facilities. It sounds a little more formal than 고치다.
Common patterns:
  • 차를 수리하다 = repair a car
  • 휴대폰을 수리하다 = repair a phone
  • 세탁기를 수리하다 = repair a washing machine
  • 집을 수리하다 = repair/renovate a house

3. 바로잡다: correct what is wrong

바로잡다 focuses on making something right or proper. It is common with mistakes, misunderstandings, posture, habits, and problems.
Common patterns:
  • 실수를 바로잡다 = correct a mistake
  • 오해를 바로잡다 = clear up/correct a misunderstanding
  • 자세를 바로잡다 = correct posture
  • 잘못된 정보를 바로잡다 = correct wrong information
Example:
  • 선생님이 학생의 발음을 바로잡아 주셨어요.
    • The teacher corrected the student’s pronunciation.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Look at the object first.
      • Object/device: 고치다 or 수리하다
      • Mistake/habit/posture/misunderstanding: 고치다 or 바로잡다
  1. Choose the closest meaning, not the exact English translation.
      • In TOPIK I, 고치다 may be closest to 수리하다 when the object is a broken item.
      • 고치다 may be closest to 바로잡다 when the object is a mistake or habit.
  1. Watch for formality.
      • 수리하다 often appears in signs, notices, service centers, and formal contexts.
      • 고치다 appears in daily conversation.
  1. Check whether the sentence is about “repairing” or “correcting.”
      • 고장 난 문을 고치다 → repair
      • 틀린 답을 고치다 → correct

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not use 수리하다 for ordinary mistakes like 답을 수리하다. Say 답을 고치다 or 답을 바로잡다.
  • Do not use 바로잡다 for a broken machine in simple TOPIK I contexts. 컴퓨터를 바로잡다 is not the normal choice for “repair a computer.”
  • 고치다 can mean both “repair” and “correct,” so always check the noun.
  • 바꾸다 means “change/switch,” but it does not always mean “fix.” It can be a distractor.
  • 만들다 means “make,” not “repair.”
