🔑 The Big Picture

Effective note-taking in TOPIK I listening is not about writing everything you hear. It is about catching the minimum useful information before it disappears.
TOPIK I audio is short, but it often includes distractors:
  • A wrong place mentioned before the real place
  • A number that changes
  • A plan that is canceled
  • A reason introduced by 그래서, 그런데, or -아서/어서
Good notes help you keep the real answer separate from the tempting distractor.

1. Write keywords, not sentences

Instead of writing:
  • 저는 오늘 오후 세 시에 친구하고 도서관에서 만나요.

3. Use symbols

  • → result or next action: 비 → 택시

4. Listen for correction markers

TOPIK distractors often appear before the final answer.
  • 아니요 / 아니에요: previous information may be wrong
  • 그런데: contrast or problem
  • 그래서: result or reason
  • 그럼: decision after discussion

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Preview the choices quickly. Underline the category: place, time, reason, object, next action.
  1. During the first pass, write only 2–4 keywords. If you try to write a full sentence, you may miss the answer.
  1. Choose an answer immediately. Do not wait for perfect certainty.
  1. During the second pass, confirm or change. Focus on the exact part that separates two similar choices.
  1. Cross out changed information. If you hear “세 시가 아니라 네 시,” note 3시 X → 4시.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Writing English translations too slowly instead of fast Korean keywords
  • Copying the first number or place you hear without checking for correction
  • Ignoring polite endings that show request, plan, or suggestion: -세요, -겠습니다, -(으)ㄹ까요?
  • Missing negative forms: 안, 못, 없어요, 아니에요
  • Taking too many notes and losing the next sentence

Better note: 내일 / 3시 X / 4시 / 도서관 앞
Why it works: The first time is a distractor. The correction marker is “세 시는 좀 바빠요,” and the real answer is “네 시.”
