TOPIK I Prep
TL;DR
  • Use -자고 하다 to report a suggestion or “let’s…” statement.
  • The quoted action keeps the proposal meaning: 가자가자고 했어요.
  • On TOPIK I, watch for the difference between suggestions, commands, questions, and statements.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read every Korean example aloud twice: first as direct speech, then as reported speech. Focus on hearing the change from -자 to -자고 하다.

🔑 The Big Picture

-자고 하다 is used when someone reports a suggestion, invitation, or proposal. In English, it often means “said/suggested that we should…” or “asked us to…” when the original sentence means “let’s…”
  • Direct suggestion: 같이 공부하자. = Let’s study together.
  • Reported suggestion: 친구가 같이 공부하자고 했어요. = My friend suggested that we study together.
For TOPIK I, this grammar usually appears in short dialogues, sentence-completion questions, and meaning-matching questions. The key is to identify whether the original sentence is a suggestion, not a command or question.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic pattern

Use a verb stem plus -자고 하다.
Direct speech
Reported speech
Meaning
가자.
가자고 했어요.
Someone suggested going.
먹자.
먹자고 했어요.
Someone suggested eating.
만나자.
만나자고 했어요.
Someone suggested meeting.

2. Full sentence pattern

Person이/가 + suggestion + -자고 했어요
  • 민수가 같이 점심을 먹자고 했어요.
    • Minsu suggested eating lunch together.
  • 선생님이 내일 일찍 만나자고 하셨어요.
    • The teacher suggested meeting early tomorrow.
  • 동생이 주말에 영화를 보자고 했어요.
    • My younger sibling suggested watching a movie on the weekend.

3. Negative suggestion

For “let’s not…,” use -지 말자고 하다.
  • 가지 말자.가지 말자고 했어요.
  • 오늘은 커피를 마시지 말자.오늘은 커피를 마시지 말자고 했어요.

4. Polite reporting

The reporting verb changes by tense and politeness.
  • 가자고 해요. = says/suggests that we go
  • 가자고 했어요. = said/suggested that we go
  • 가자고 할 거예요. = will suggest that we go
  • 가자고 하셨어요. = honorific: someone suggested that we go

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Find the speaker’s intent. If the original sentence means “let’s…,” choose -자고 하다.
  1. Do not be tricked by English “asked.” In Korean indirect speech, suggestions use -자고 하다, not command grammar.
  1. Match the ending to the direct quote.
      • Statement: 비가 와요비가 온다고 했어요
      • Question: 어디에 가요?어디에 가냐고 했어요
      • Command: 문을 닫으세요문을 닫으라고 했어요
      • Suggestion: 같이 가자같이 가자고 했어요
  1. Keep time and place words clear. 내일, 오늘, 여기, and 거기 often decide the correct meaning in TOPIK dialogues.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Using -라고 하다 for suggestions: 같이 가라고 했어요 means someone told another person to go together; it is not the same as 같이 가자고 했어요.
  • Changing the verb stem unnecessarily: The suggestion ending is already -자, so 먹자고, 가자고, 읽자고 are all direct.
  • Missing negative proposals: 하지 말자고 했어요 means “suggested not doing it.”
  • Confusing invitation and command: 오세요 is a command/request, but 와요 used as “come?” may be a question; 오자 is a suggestion.
