💡
TL;DR
  • -다고 하다 reports what someone said: “someone says/said that...”
  • Use -다고 해요 after descriptive verbs and most action verbs in statement form.
  • For TOPIK I, focus on recognizing reported meaning, speaker source, and tense clues.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read each direct sentence first, then read the reported sentence aloud. Notice how the speaker's words become one sentence with -다고 해요 / -다고 했어요.

🔑 The Big Picture

Korean often reports another person's words without quoting them exactly. TOPIK I reading and listening may use short reported statements to tell you what a teacher, friend, family member, or announcement said.
Direct speech:
  • 친구: “오늘 바빠요.”
Reported speech:
  • 친구가 오늘 바쁘다고 해요.
  • My friend says they are busy today.
The key is to understand who said it, what they said, and whether it is present or past reporting.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic statement reporting

Use -다고 하다 to report a statement.
Pattern
  • Speaker + 이/가 + statement stem + -다고 해요
  • Speaker + 이/가 + statement stem + -다고 했어요
Examples:
  • 민수 씨가 오늘 시간이 없다고 해요.
    • Minsu says they do not have time today.
  • 선생님이 내일 시험이 있다고 했어요.
    • The teacher said there is a test tomorrow.

2. Descriptive verbs

With descriptive verbs, attach -다고 하다 to the dictionary stem.
Examples:
  • 크다 → 크다고 해요
  • 작다 → 작다고 해요
  • 좋다 → 좋다고 해요
  • 바쁘다 → 바쁘다고 해요

3. Action verbs in simple statements

In beginner TOPIK-style recognition, many action verbs appear as -ㄴ/는다고 하다. You may also see simplified practice with -다고 하다, but the natural pattern is:
  • 가다 → 간다고 해요
  • 먹다 → 먹는다고 해요
  • 읽다 → 읽는다고 해요
  • 공부하다 → 공부한다고 해요

4. Noun statements

For nouns, use (이)라고 하다.
Examples:
  • 학생이다 → 학생이라고 해요
  • 의사이다 → 의사라고 해요
This lesson focuses on statement reporting, but TOPIK may mix -다고 and (이)라고.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Find the speaker: 친구가, 선생님이, 어머니가, 안내 방송에서.
  1. Find the reported content after the speaker.
  1. Notice 해요 vs 했어요:
      • 해요 = says / says that
      • 했어요 = said / said that
  1. Do not confuse the reporter with the original speaker. In “민수가 바쁘다고 해요,” Minsu is the person who is busy.
  1. If the answer choices are in English, translate the whole reported idea, not word by word.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not translate 하다 literally as “do” in this pattern. -다고 하다 means “say that.”
  • Do not ignore tense. 말했다고 했어요 can mean “said that they spoke.”
  • Do not use -다고 for all noun sentences. Nouns usually need (이)라고.
  • In TOPIK I, first understand meaning before worrying about advanced quotation rules.

🧪 Guided Examples

Example C

✅ Final Review

When you see -다고 하다, do not translate 하다 as “do.” Read it as “say that.” Find the speaker first, then the reported content. For TOPIK I, this quickly reveals who said what and why the next action happens.
