💡
TL;DR
  • Use V-(으)라고 하다 to report a command or instruction: “someone says/tells someone to do…”
  • Use V-아/어 달라고 하다 when reporting a request for help or favor: “someone asks someone to do… for them.”
  • In TOPIK I, listen or read for the speaker, the requested action, and whether it is a command or a favor.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read each Korean example aloud twice. First, say the direct command/request. Second, say the reported sentence. This helps you hear the change from 가세요가라고 했어요 and 도와주세요도와 달라고 했어요.

🔑 The Big Picture

In Korean, you often need to report what someone told or asked another person to do.
Direct speech:
  • 선생님: “책을 읽으세요.”
    • Teacher: “Please read the book.”
Reported speech:
  • 선생님이 책을 읽으라고 했어요.
    • The teacher told us to read the book.
For TOPIK I, this pattern appears in short conversations, notices, classroom situations, family requests, and everyday instructions. The exam usually checks whether you understand who gave the instruction and what action should be done.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Commands: V-(으)라고 하다

Use this when someone gives an instruction, order, or command.
Verb type
Pattern
Example
Verb stem ends in vowel
V-라고 하다
가다 → 가라고 하다
Verb stem ends in consonant
V-으라고 하다
읽다 → 읽으라고 하다
ㄹ-ending verb
Drop ㄹ + 라고 하다
만들다 → 만들라고 하다
Examples:
  • 어머니가 일찍 오라고 했어요.
    • My mother told me to come early.
  • 선생님이 이름을 쓰라고 했어요.
    • The teacher told us to write our names.
  • 친구가 같이 점심을 먹으라고 했어요.
    • My friend told me to eat lunch together.

2. Negative commands: V-지 말라고 하다

Use this when someone says “Don’t do…”
Examples:
  • 의사가 커피를 마시지 말라고 했어요.
    • The doctor told me not to drink coffee.
  • 선생님이 늦지 말라고 했어요.
    • The teacher told us not to be late.
  • 엄마가 밤에 게임하지 말라고 했어요.
    • Mom told me not to play games at night.

3. Requests and favors: V-아/어 달라고 하다

Use this when someone asks another person to do something for the speaker.
Direct request:
  • “문을 열어 주세요.”
    • Please open the door for me.
Reported request:
  • 문을 열어 달라고 했어요.
    • Someone asked me to open the door.
Examples:
  • 친구가 사진을 찍어 달라고 했어요.
    • My friend asked me to take a picture.
  • 동생이 숙제를 도와 달라고 했어요.
    • My younger sibling asked me to help with homework.
  • 할머니가 천천히 말해 달라고 했어요.
    • Grandmother asked me to speak slowly.

4. Polite reporting: -라고 했습니다 / -라고 말했습니다

In TOPIK, you may see different endings after the reported phrase.
  • 선생님이 내일 오라고 했어요.
  • 선생님이 내일 오라고 했습니다.
  • 선생님이 내일 오라고 말했습니다.
The meaning is the same: “The teacher said/told us to come tomorrow.” The final style changes the politeness or formality.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Find the original action.
    1. Look for the verb before -라고 하다, -으라고 하다, or -아/어 달라고 하다.
  1. Identify command vs request.
      • 가라고 했어요 = told someone to go
      • 가 달라고 했어요 is usually unnatural; for favors, use 가 주세요 → 가 달라고 했어요 only when “go for me” makes sense.
  1. Watch negative commands.
    1. 하지 말라고 했어요 means “told someone not to do it,” not “said they did not do it.”
  1. Track the speaker and listener.
    1. 어머니가 민수에게 전화하라고 했어요.
= Mother told Minsu to call.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not use -다고 하다 for commands.
    • 먹으세요 → 먹으라고 했어요, not 먹는다고 했어요.
  • Do not forget 으 after consonant stems.
    • 읽다 → 읽으라고 했어요.
  • Do not add 으 after vowel stems.
    • 가다 → 가라고 했어요, not 가으라고 했어요.
  • Do not confuse a request with a statement.
    • 도와 달라고 했어요 = asked for help.
도와준다고 했어요 = said they would help.
  • Do not miss 말라고.
    • 먹지 말라고 했어요 = told someone not to eat.

🧪 Guided Examples

Example 1

Direct: 선생님: “책을 펴세요.”
Reported: 선생님이 책을 펴라고 했어요.
Why: 펴다 ends in a vowel, so use -라고 하다.

Example 2

Direct: 아버지: “신문을 읽으세요.”
Reported: 아버지가 신문을 읽으라고 했어요.
Why: 읽다 ends in a consonant, so use -으라고 하다.

Example 3

Direct: 친구: “사진을 보내 주세요.”
Reported: 친구가 사진을 보내 달라고 했어요.
Why: This is a favor/request for the speaker, so use -아/어 달라고 하다.

Example 4

Direct: 의사: “찬물을 마시지 마세요.”
Reported: 의사가 찬물을 마시지 말라고 했어요.
Why: Negative command becomes V-지 말라고 하다.

  • Change a direct command into V-(으)라고 했어요.
  • Change a direct request with 주세요 into V-아/어 달라고 했어요.
  • Understand V-지 말라고 했어요 as “told someone not to do something.”
