TL;DR
- Personal narratives in TOPIK I are short stories about someone’s day, memory, feeling, or experience.
- Track who, when, where, what happened, and how the person felt.
- Emotion clues often appear near the end:
기뻤어요,슬펐어요,재미있었어요,힘들었어요,고마웠어요.
🎧 Helper Note: Read these chunks aloud:
어제 친구를 만났어요, 처음에는 힘들었어요, 그래서 기뻤어요, 좋은 하루였어요, 다음에도 가고 싶어요. TOPIK I personal narratives often sound like diary entries.🔑 The Big Picture
A personal narrative is a short text about a person’s experience. It may look like a diary, simple essay, or short memory.
TOPIK I personal narratives often include:
- daily activities: school, work, shopping, travel, eating
- time order: first, then, after that, finally
- feelings: happy, sad, tired, thankful, worried
- simple reasons: because it rained, because a friend helped, because the food was delicious
- final opinion: “It was a good day,” “I want to go again,” “I was thankful.”
Your goal is to understand the story flow:
- Who is the story about?
- What happened first?
- What happened next?
- Why did the person feel that way?
- What is the main feeling or lesson?
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1. Common narrative time words
Korean | Meaning | Use |
어제 | yesterday | past event |
오늘 | today | same-day story |
지난 주말 | last weekend | memory/experience |
먼저 | first | sequence |
그리고 | and/then | next event |
마지막으로 | lastly | final event |
2. Common feeling words
기쁘다= happy
슬프다= sad
재미있다= fun/interesting
힘들다= difficult/tiring
피곤하다= tired
걱정하다= worry
고맙다= thankful
좋다= good
Examples:
친구를 만나서 기뻤어요.= I was happy because I met a friend.
시험이 어려워서 힘들었어요.= It was hard because the exam was difficult.
선생님이 도와주셔서 고마웠어요.= I was thankful because the teacher helped.
3. Cause and result
Narratives often explain feelings with
-아서/어서 or 그래서.비가 와서 집에 있었어요.= Because it rained, I stayed home.
친구가 도와줬어요. 그래서 고마웠어요.= My friend helped. So I was thankful.
길이 막혀서 늦었어요.= I was late because traffic was bad.
4. Past tense is important

먹었어요= ate
봤어요= saw/watched
재미있었어요= was fun
힘들었어요= was hard/tiring
✅ Exam Strategy
1. Build a simple timeline
When reading, list events in order:
- First: went to the library
- Next: met a friend
- Then: studied together
- Result: felt happy/helped
2. Find emotion clues
Emotion words often answer questions like:
이 사람의 기분은 어땠습니까?
왜 기뻤습니까?
이 글의 내용과 같은 것은 무엇입니까?
3. Watch contrast
처음에는 ... 하지만 ... often shows a change.처음에는 어려웠어요. 하지만 친구가 도와줘서 괜찮았어요.
- At first it was hard, but then it became okay.
4. Check who did the action
Wrong answers often switch people.
- Text:
친구가 저를 도와줬어요.
- Correct: The friend helped me.
- Wrong: I helped the friend.
⚠️ Pitfalls
Pitfall 1: Missing the final feeling
The last sentence often gives the writer’s opinion or feeling. Do not skip it.
Pitfall 2: Confusing cause and result
비가 와서 못 갔어요 means rain was the cause; not going was the result.Pitfall 3: Choosing an answer from one word only
A choice may share one word with the text but change the story. Match the whole meaning.
Pitfall 4: Ignoring past tense
Narratives are usually about something that already happened. Watch
-았/었어요.Practice Hub: TOPIK I Personal Narrative Drill
