TL;DR
- A double negative often makes the final meaning positive, but it can sound softer or more emphatic than a simple positive sentence.
- In TOPIK I reading, watch negative markers like 안, 못, 없다, 아니다, 모르다, and endings like -지 않다.
- Do not translate word by word; first find the final claim: “is it true, not true, possible, impossible, necessary, or unnecessary?”
🎧 Helper Note
Read each Korean example aloud twice. On the first read, underline every negative word. On the second read, say the final meaning in one simple positive or negative sentence.
🔑 The Big Picture
Double negatives appear when one negative idea is used with another negative form. In English, “not uncommon” means “common enough.” Korean works similarly in many reading passages:
- 나쁘지 않아요. = It is not bad. → It is okay / fairly good.
- 모르는 사람이 없어요. = There is no person who does not know. → Everyone knows.
- 가지 않을 수 없어요. = I cannot not go. → I have to go.
For TOPIK I, the test usually checks whether you can identify the real meaning behind a sentence that looks negative on the surface.
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1. 안 / -지 않다 + negative adjective or verb
When a negative form describes another negative idea, the meaning often becomes positive or neutral-positive.
- 쉽지 않다 = not easy → difficult
- 나쁘지 않다 = not bad → okay / pretty good
- 적지 않다 = not few → quite many
2. 없다 with a negative relative clause
This pattern often means “everyone / always / definitely.”
- 모르는 사람이 없다 = There is no person who does not know → everyone knows.
- 안 가 본 곳이 없다 = There is no place I have not been → I have been everywhere.
3. -지 않을 수 없다
This means the speaker cannot avoid doing something, so the final meaning is must / have no choice but to.
- 웃지 않을 수 없어요. = I cannot help laughing.
- 도와주지 않을 수 없었어요. = I had no choice but to help.
4. -지 않으면 안 되다
This means “if you do not do it, it is not okay,” so the final meaning is must do.
- 숙제를 하지 않으면 안 돼요. = You must do the homework.
- 오늘 신청하지 않으면 안 됩니다. = You must apply today.
5. Soft positive meaning
Some double negatives are not exactly the same as strong positive statements. They can sound cautious, polite, or moderate.
- 좋아요. = It is good.
- 나쁘지 않아요. = It is not bad. → It is okay / better than expected.
✅ Exam Strategy
- Circle every negative word. Look for 안, 못, 없다, 아니다, 모르다, -지 않다, -지 못하다.
- Find the main sentence ending. The final verb or adjective usually tells you the writer’s real claim.
- Simplify the meaning. Change the sentence into one clear statement:
- 모르는 사람이 없다 → 모두 안다
- 가지 않을 수 없다 → 꼭 가야 한다
- 나쁘지 않다 → 괜찮다
- Check the tone. “Not bad” is usually weaker than “excellent.” “Not few” means “many,” but often with emphasis.
- Choose the option with the same final meaning, not the same surface words. TOPIK distractors often copy negative words but reverse the meaning.
⚠️ Pitfalls
- Counting only one negative. If you see two negative ideas, stop and simplify.
- Treating every double negative as a strong positive. 나쁘지 않다 usually means “okay / fairly good,” not always “excellent.”
- Missing hidden negatives. Words like 없다, 모르다, 아니다, and 어렵다 can carry negative meaning even without 안.
- Confusing obligation patterns. -지 않으면 안 되다 and -지 않을 수 없다 both often mean “must.”
- Choosing a literal translation. TOPIK reading questions reward meaning, not word-by-word translation.

- -지 않을 수 없다 → 할 수밖에 없다 / 꼭 하게 된다
- 적지 않다 → 많다
- 나쁘지 않다 → 괜찮다
