TOPIK I Prep
TL;DR
  • In TOPIK I reading, purpose questions ask why the writer wrote the text, not just what the text says.
  • Look for action words and format clues: 초대, 안내, 부탁, 감사, 사과, 광고, 공지.
  • Read the final sentence carefully because it often shows the writer’s real intention.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Even though this is a reading lesson, read each Korean text aloud once. Hearing the tone helps you notice whether the writer is inviting, asking, thanking, apologizing, or informing.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I reading often includes short notes, messages, notices, invitations, advertisements, and announcements. Purpose questions usually ask:
  • 이 글을 쓴 목적은 무엇입니까?
  • 이 사람은 왜 이 글을 썼습니까?
  • 이 글은 무엇을 하기 위한 것입니까?
A weak strategy is to translate every word and choose an answer that contains a familiar keyword. A stronger strategy is to ask:
“What action does the writer want to do or make the reader do?”

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Common purpose categories

Purpose
Korean clue
Typical meaning
Invitation
오세요 / 같이 가요 / 초대합니다
The writer wants someone to come or join.
Request
-아/어 주세요 / 부탁합니다
The writer asks someone to do something.
Information
알려 드립니다 / 안내합니다
The writer gives information.
Apology
죄송합니다 / 미안합니다
The writer apologizes.
Thanks
감사합니다 / 고맙습니다
The writer thanks someone.
싸게 팝니다 / 할인 / 새로 열었습니다
The writer promotes a product, service, or place.

2. Read the text type first

Before reading every sentence, identify the format.
  • 문자 message: usually request, thanks, apology, or plan change
  • 안내문 notice: usually information about time, place, rule, or event
  • 광고 advertisement: usually selling or promoting something
  • 초대장 invitation: usually asking someone to come
  • 메모 memo: usually request or reminder

3. Key expressions that reveal purpose

Request:
  • 문 좀 닫아 주세요.
  • 내일 전화해 주세요.
  • 숙제를 가져와 주세요.
Invitation:
  • 생일 파티에 오세요.
  • 같이 영화 보러 가요.
  • 우리 집에 초대합니다.
Information:
  • 수업 시간이 바뀌었습니다.
  • 도서관은 월요일에 쉽니다.
  • 행사는 3시에 시작합니다.
Apology:
  • 늦어서 죄송합니다.
  • 약속을 지키지 못해서 미안합니다.
Thanks:
  • 도와줘서 고맙습니다.
  • 선물을 보내 주셔서 감사합니다.
Advertisement:
  • 새 가게를 열었습니다.
  • 오늘부터 30퍼센트 할인합니다.
  • 맛있는 빵을 싸게 팝니다.

✅ Exam Strategy

Use the 3-step purpose check.
  1. Find the text type
      • message, notice, advertisement, invitation, memo
  1. Find the action clue
      • come, call, bring, buy, change, thank, apologize, inform
  1. Choose the answer that explains the reason for writing
      • Not just a detail in the text
      • Not just the topic
      • Not the reader’s possible feeling
Example:
민수 씨, 오늘 회의가 2시에서 3시로 바뀌었습니다. 늦지 않게 와 주세요.
Purpose:
  • Topic: meeting time
  • Detail: 2시 → 3시
  • Purpose: to inform about a changed meeting time
Correct purpose: 회의 시간이 바뀐 것을 알려 주려고

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Choosing a topic instead of purpose
    • Text says “birthday party,” but purpose may be “to invite someone.”
  • Choosing a detail instead of purpose
    • Text says “3 p.m.,” but purpose may be “to announce the changed time.”
  • Missing polite requests
    • -아/어 주세요 often means the writer is asking for help or action.
  • Confusing thanks and invitation
    • 와 주셔서 감사합니다 = thanks for coming, not an invitation to come.
  • Ignoring the final sentence
    • The last sentence often contains 부탁합니다, 오세요, 죄송합니다, or 감사합니다.
