TL;DR
  • TOPIK I reading often hides the answer in who does what to whom.
  • Track subject markers (이/가, 은/는) and object markers (을/를) so you do not confuse the actor and the target.
  • When the passage changes from one person/object to another, underline the names and pronouns before choosing the answer.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read the key Korean chunks aloud: 민수가 책을 샀어요, 수미가 민수에게 줬어요, 그것을 읽었어요, 친구는 동생을 만났어요. Listen for who acts and what receives the action.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I reading passages are short, but they often include more than one person, object, or place. A common trap is mixing up:
  • who did the action
  • who received something
  • what object changed
  • which person a pronoun refers to
  • whether the topic stayed the same or shifted
This skill is especially important in questions about messages, schedules, shopping, gifts, invitations, and short stories.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) Subject: who does the action?

The subject is often marked by 이/가 or 은/는.
  • 민수가 빵을 샀어요. = Minsu bought bread.
  • 수미는 학교에 갔어요. = Sumi went to school.
  • 선생님이 숙제를 냈어요. = The teacher assigned homework.
In TOPIK I, the subject may be omitted if it is clear from context. When omitted, look at the previous sentence.

2) Object: what receives the action?

The object is often marked by 을/를.
  • 민수가 빵을 샀어요. = Minsu bought bread.
  • 친구가 영화를 봤어요. = A friend watched a movie.
  • 동생이 우유를 마셨어요. = The younger sibling drank milk.
Do not confuse the object with the subject. In 민수가 빵을 샀어요, the bread did not buy Minsu.

3) Receiver: who gets something?

With verbs like 주다, 보내다, 전화하다, and 말하다, look for 에게/한테/께.
  • 수미가 민수에게 선물을 줬어요. = Sumi gave a gift to Minsu.
  • 저는 선생님께 이메일을 보냈어요. = I sent an email to the teacher.
  • 친구가 저에게 전화했어요. = A friend called me.
The receiver is not always the subject.

4) Topic shifts with 은/는

은/는 can show a topic or contrast. It may signal that the passage is switching focus.
  • 민수는 커피를 좋아해요. 수미는 차를 좋아해요.
    • Minsu likes coffee. Sumi likes tea.
  • 저는 영화관에 갔어요. 친구는 집에 있었어요.
    • I went to the theater. My friend stayed home.
When the topic changes, do not carry the old subject into the new sentence.

5) Pronouns and reference words

TOPIK I may use simple references:
  • 그 = that/he/she/it depending on context
  • 그것 = that thing
  • 거기 / 그곳 = there/that place
  • 이 사람 / 그 사람 = this person / that person
  • 그 후 = after that
Example:
  • 저는 새 가방을 샀어요. 그것은 아주 가벼워요.
    • 그것 = the new bag

6) Object shifts

Sometimes the person stays the same, but the object changes.
  • 민수는 빵을 샀어요. 그리고 우유를 마셨어요.
    • Same person: Minsu
    • Object 1: bread
    • Object 2: milk
Sometimes the object from one sentence becomes the topic of the next.
  • 저는 책을 샀어요. 그 책은 아주 재미있어요.
    • object first: 책을
    • topic next: 그 책은

✅ Exam Strategy

1) Circle people and underline objects

When reading, mark:
  • people: 민수, 수미, 친구, 선생님, 동생
  • objects: 책, 선물, 가방, 이메일, 문자
  • receivers: 에게/한테/께

2) Ask “Who did it?”

For every verb, ask:
  • 누가 샀어요? = Who bought it?
  • 누가 줬어요? = Who gave it?
  • 누가 받았어요? = Who received it?
  • 누가 갔어요? = Who went?

3) Ask “What/whom did they act on?”

Look for 을/를 and 에게/한테.
  • 무엇을 샀어요?
  • 누구를 만났어요?
  • 누구에게 줬어요?

4) Watch verbs with direction

These verbs often create subject/object traps:
  • 주다 = give
  • 받다 = receive
  • 보내다 = send
  • 전화하다 = call
  • 만나다 = meet
  • 데려가다 = take someone along
  • 빌리다 = borrow
  • 빌려주다 = lend

5) Do not assume from real life

Only choose what the sentence says. If the passage says “Sumi gave Minsu a book,” do not choose “Minsu gave Sumi a book.”

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Confusing giver and receiver

  • 수미가 민수에게 선물을 줬어요.
    • giver: 수미
    • receiver: 민수
    • object: 선물

Pitfall 2: Ignoring 은/는 contrast

  • 민수는 버스를 탔어요. 수미는 지하철을 탔어요.
    • Minsu took the bus.
    • Sumi took the subway.

Pitfall 3: Treating 그 사람 as a new person

그 사람 usually refers to a person already mentioned. Look backward.

Pitfall 4: Missing omitted subjects

Korean often omits repeated subjects.
  • 저는 시장에 갔어요. 사과를 샀어요.
    • The second sentence likely means “I bought apples.”

Pitfall 5: Mixing up 받다 and 주다

  • 받다 = receive
  • 주다 = give
  • 선물을 받았어요 = received a gift
  • 선물을 줬어요 = gave a gift

✅ Final Check

  • Always ask: 누가? 무엇을? 누구에게?
  • 이/가 and 은/는 help identify the subject/topic.
  • 을/를 marks the object.
  • 에게/한테/께 often marks the receiver.
  • When the passage changes people or objects, do not carry the old subject into the new sentence automatically.
TL;DR
  • TOPIK I reading often changes who does the action and what receives the action across sentences.
  • Track particles: 이/가, 은/는 often mark the subject/topic; 을/를 marks the object.
  • When names or pronouns change, pause and ask: “Who did it?” and “What did they do it to?”
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read each sentence aloud and stress the particles: 민수가 책을 읽어요, 수진이는 민수에게 선물을 줘요, 그 책은 재미있어요. Particles help you hear who and what changed.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I reading passages are short, but they often mention more than one person or object. If you miss a subject or object shift, you may choose an answer about the wrong person, wrong item, or wrong action.
Common shifts:
  • Person A → Person B
  • Subject → object
  • Object in one sentence → topic in the next sentence
  • Place or item → 그곳, 그것, 이것
  • Speaker’s action → friend’s action
Example:
민수 씨는 책을 샀습니다. 그 책을 수진 씨에게 주었습니다.
  • 민수 bought the book.
  • 민수 gave the book to Sujin.
  • The book is the object; Sujin is the receiver.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) Subject/topic markers: 이/가 and 은/는

이/가 often identifies the subject doing or being something.
은/는 often marks the topic being discussed.
  • 민수가 왔어요. = Minsu came.
  • 민수는 학생이에요. = As for Minsu, they are a student.
  • 날씨가 좋아요. = The weather is good.
  • 오늘은 날씨가 좋아요. = As for today, the weather is good.

2) Object marker: 을/를

을/를 marks what receives the action.
  • 책을 읽어요. = read a book
  • 영화를 봐요. = watch a movie
  • 밥을 먹어요. = eat rice/meal
  • 선물을 샀어요. = bought a gift

3) Receiver markers: 에게/한테/께

When giving, sending, calling, or telling, look for the receiver.
  • 친구에게 선물을 줬어요. = gave a gift to a friend
  • 동생한테 문자를 보냈어요. = sent a text to a younger sibling
  • 선생님께 질문했어요. = asked the teacher

4) Reference words

These words usually refer to something already mentioned:
  • 그 사람 = that person
  • 그 책 = that book
  • 그곳 = that place
  • 그것 = that thing
  • 이 행사 = this event

✅ Exam Strategy

1) Circle names and particles

When a passage has two people, mark each name and particle:
  • Who is doing the action?
  • Who receives the action?
  • What object is moved, bought, read, or given?

2) Track object-to-topic shifts

A sentence may introduce an object, and the next sentence may talk about it.
저는 어제 가방을 샀습니다. 그 가방은 아주 가볍습니다.
  • Sentence 1: 가방 = object bought
  • Sentence 2: 그 가방 = topic described

3) Watch giving/sending verbs

For 주다, 보내다, 말하다, 전화하다, there may be three roles:
  • giver/sender/speaker
  • receiver
  • object/message

4) Do not assume the same subject continues

If a new name appears with 이/가 or 은/는, the subject/topic may have changed.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Confusing giver and receiver

민수가 수진에게 선물을 줬어요.
  • Giver: 민수
  • Receiver: 수진
  • Object: 선물

Pitfall 2: Ignoring 을/를

친구가 사과를 먹었어요. means the friend ate the apple, not “the apple ate the friend.”

Pitfall 3: Missing reference words

그곳 cannot be understood alone. Find the place mentioned before it.

Pitfall 4: Assuming every sentence has the same subject

A new sentence can shift to another person, object, or place.

✅ Final Check

  • Ask two questions for each sentence: Who did it? What did they do it to?
  • Watch receiver markers: 에게, 한테, .
  • Reference words like 그것, 그곳, and 그 사람 point back to earlier nouns.
💡
TL;DR
  • In TOPIK I reading, the answer often depends on who does the action and what the action is directed toward.
  • Track particles: 이/가 often marks the subject, while 을/를 often marks the object.
  • When a sentence changes topic, time, or contrast, re-check the subject and object before choosing an answer.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read the Korean example sentences aloud. Pause after particles like 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에게, 한테 and ask: “Who?” “What?” “To whom?”

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I reading questions are usually short, but they often test whether you can follow a simple change in subject or object.
A sentence may begin with one person or thing, then shift to another:
  • 민수는 빵을 샀습니다. 지수는 우유를 샀습니다.
    • → Minsu bought bread. Jisu bought milk.
  • 저는 친구에게 전화를 했습니다. 친구는 지금 바쁩니다.
    • → I called my friend. The friend is busy now.
If you assume the same person stays central throughout the whole passage, you may choose a wrong answer. This lesson trains you to notice when the “doer” or “target” changes.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Subject: Who or what is doing the action?

Common subject/topic markers:
  • 은/는: topic or contrast
  • 이/가: subject, new information, emphasis
Examples:
  • 동생이 책을 읽습니다.
    • → The younger sibling reads a book.
  • 저는 커피를 마십니다. 친구는 차를 마십니다.
    • → I drink coffee. My friend drinks tea.
In the second sentence, 저는 and 친구는 create a clear subject shift.

2. Object: What receives the action?

Common object marker:
  • 을/를
Examples:
  • 저는 영화를 봅니다.
    • → I watch a movie.
  • 어머니는 김치를 만듭니다.
    • → Mother makes kimchi.
The object is not always a person. It can be food, a place name, a thing, or an activity.

3. Recipient or target: To whom?

Common recipient/target markers:
  • 에게 / 한테: to a person
  • : to a place or time
  • 에서: at/from a place
Examples:
  • 저는 친구에게 선물을 줍니다.
    • → I give a gift to my friend.
  • 학생들이 학교에서 공부합니다.
    • → Students study at school.

4. Common shift signals

Watch for these signals because they often introduce a new subject, object, or direction:
  • 그리고: and / then
  • 하지만 / 그러나: but / however
  • 그래서: so / therefore
  • 그 후에: after that
  • 이번에는: this time
  • New nouns with 은/는 or 이/가
Example:
  • 수지는 사과를 좋아합니다. 하지만 민호는 바나나를 좋아합니다.
    • → Suji likes apples, but Minho likes bananas.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Underline the nouns. Identify people, places, and things.
  1. Circle the particles. Especially 은/는, 이/가, 을/를, 에게/한테.
  1. Ask two questions for each sentence.
      • Who is doing the action?
      • What or whom is affected?
  1. Check for shifts. Words like 하지만, 그리고, 그 후에, 이번에는 often mean the sentence focus changes.
  1. Match the answer to the final structure, not your first impression. TOPIK distractors often reuse correct words but attach them to the wrong person or object.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Pitfall 1: Following the first subject only
    • If the passage starts with “민수는,” do not assume every later action is also done by Minsu.
  • Pitfall 2: Ignoring contrastive 은/는
    • “저는 커피를 마십니다. 친구는 차를 마십니다.” means two different people drink two different things.
  • Pitfall 3: Confusing object and recipient
    • “친구에게 선물을 줍니다” means the friend receives the gift. The friend is not the object being given.
  • Pitfall 4: Choosing by vocabulary match only
    • A wrong answer may contain the same noun from the passage but describe the wrong relationship.

🧠 Review Checklist

Before answering a TOPIK I reading question, check:
  • Did the subject change from one sentence to the next?
  • Did the object change?
  • Is 에게/한테/께 showing a receiver?
  • Is a later sentence omitting the subject because it is already understood?
  • Does an answer choice attach the right action to the right person?
If you can answer “Who did what to whom?” accurately, you can avoid many TOPIK I reading traps.
