🔑 The Big Picture

Korean particles often carry meaning that English expresses with several different words. 까지 and 마저 can both look like “even,” but they are not interchangeable.
  • 까지 is broad and common. It marks the final point of a range or adds one item to a list.
  • 마저 is narrower. It emphasizes that something remaining, final, or unexpected is included too.
For TOPIK I, the safest strategy is to first ask: Is this sentence about a limit/range, or about emotional emphasis?

Use 까지 for a place, time, number, or included endpoint.

2. N + 까지 = even / including

Use 까지 when you add something to a list. The feeling can be neutral or mildly surprising.

3. N + 마저 = even the remaining/last thing too

Use 마저 when the speaker feels that something else has happened in addition to other things, often negatively.

  • 마지막 기회마저 놓쳤어요. = I missed even the last chance.

  1. Find the noun before the blank. Is it a time, place, number, or endpoint? Choose 까지.
  1. Check the sentence mood. If the sentence describes loss, failure, difficulty, or surprise, 마저 may fit.
  1. Look for “last remaining” logic. Words like 마지막, 남은, 하나, 돈, 친구, 우산 can appear with 마저 when the feeling is “even that too.”
  1. Do not overuse 마저. If the sentence simply means “to school,” “until tomorrow,” or “up to five,” 마저 is wrong.
