TL;DR
  • 보다 marks the comparison standard: A보다 B가 더/훨씬 … = “B is more … than A.”
  • means “more”; 훨씬 means “much/far more.”
  • In TOPIK I, focus on word order, natural particles, and choosing the sentence that compares two things correctly.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read each Korean example aloud twice: first slowly to notice 보다, then naturally to hear how and 훨씬 strengthen the comparison.

🔑 The Big Picture

The particle 보다 is one of the most common comparison markers in TOPIK I. It attaches to the thing used as the standard of comparison.
Basic meaning:
  • A보다 B가 더 커요.
    • B is bigger than A.
  • 오늘보다 내일이 더 추워요.
    • Tomorrow is colder than today.
  • 버스보다 지하철이 훨씬 빨라요.
    • The subway is much faster than the bus.
The important idea is: 보다 does not mean “to see” here. It means “than” when attached to a noun or time expression.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic comparison pattern

A보다 B가/이 더 + adjective/verb
  • 사과보다 수박이 더 커요.
    • Watermelons are bigger than apples.
  • 어제보다 오늘이 더 바빠요.
    • Today is busier than yesterday.
  • 한국어보다 영어가 더 쉬워요.
    • English is easier than Korean.
Structure:
  • A보다 = than A
  • B가/이 = B is the thing being described
  • = more
  • adjective/verb = the quality or action being compared

2. Using 훨씬 for a stronger comparison

훨씬 means much more / far more. It makes the difference sound bigger.
  • 이 가방보다 저 가방이 훨씬 비싸요.
    • That bag is much more expensive than this bag.
  • 버스보다 지하철이 훨씬 빨라요.
    • The subway is much faster than the bus.
  • 작년보다 올해 한국어를 훨씬 잘해요.
    • I speak Korean much better this year than last year.

3. 더 can be omitted sometimes

In natural Korean, is often used, especially for learners and TOPIK I. But it can sometimes be omitted when the comparison is clear.
  • 저는 커피보다 차를 좋아해요.
    • I like tea more than coffee.
  • 언니보다 동생이 키가 커요.
    • The younger sibling is taller than the older sister.
For TOPIK I, using is usually safe when the sentence is clearly comparing degree:
  • 언니보다 동생이 더 커요.

4. 보다 attaches directly to the comparison standard

Do not add another particle after 보다.
Correct:
  • 서울보다 부산이 더 따뜻해요.
Incorrect:
  • 서울이보다 부산이 더 따뜻해요.
  • 서울보다가 부산이 더 따뜻해요.

5. Common TOPIK I sentence patterns

You will often see comparisons with:
  • weather: 어제보다 오늘이 더 추워요
  • price: 이 옷보다 저 옷이 더 싸요
  • distance: 집보다 학교가 더 가까워요
  • preference: 커피보다 차를 더 좋아해요
  • ability: 작년보다 올해 한국어를 더 잘해요
  • quantity: 사과보다 바나나가 더 많아요

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1. Find the comparison standard

Look for the word with 보다.
  • 기차보다 비행기가 더 빨라요.
    • Standard: 기차
      Compared item: 비행기
Meaning: Airplanes are faster than trains.

Step 2. Identify what is “more”

The noun with 이/가 or the object near the adjective/verb is usually what has the stronger quality.
  • 언니보다 제가 더 작아요.
    • I am shorter than my older sister.
Do not translate word-by-word. First find:
  1. A보다
  1. B가/이
  1. 더/훨씬 + quality

Step 3. Watch for preference verbs

With 좋아하다, the preferred item usually appears as the object.
  • 저는 빵보다 밥을 더 좋아해요.
    • I like rice more than bread.
Pattern:
  • A보다 B를 더 좋아해요 = I like B more than A.

Step 4. Choose the natural Korean sentence

In multiple-choice questions, eliminate sentences with:
  • 보다 attached to the wrong word
  • missing comparison target
  • unnatural particle combinations like 보다가
  • reversed meaning

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1. Confusing 보다 with “to see”

보다 can mean “to see/watch” as a verb, but in comparisons it is a particle meaning “than.”
  • 영화를 봐요. = I watch a movie.
  • 영화보다 드라마를 더 좋아해요. = I like dramas more than movies.

Pitfall 2. Reversing A and B

A보다 B가 더 커요 means B is bigger, not A.
  • 고양이보다 개가 더 커요.
    • Dogs are bigger than cats.

Pitfall 3. Overusing 훨씬

Use 훨씬 only when the difference is large.
Natural:
  • 오늘은 어제보다 훨씬 추워요.
    • Today is much colder than yesterday.
Less natural if the difference is tiny:
  • 오늘은 어제보다 훨씬 1도 추워요.

Pitfall 4. Forgetting the object particle with 좋아하다

Natural TOPIK I pattern:
  • 커피보다 차를 더 좋아해요.
Not:
  • 커피보다 차가 더 좋아해요 if the intended meaning is “I like tea more than coffee.”
    • That sentence sounds more like “Tea is better than coffee.”

✅ Final Review

Before moving on, say these three sentences aloud:
  • 어제보다 오늘이 더 추워요.
  • 커피보다 차를 더 좋아해요.
  • 버스보다 지하철이 훨씬 빨라요.
If you can identify the comparison standard after 보다, the compared item, and the strength word 더/훨씬, you are ready for TOPIK I comparison questions.
TL;DR
  • 보다 marks the comparison standard: A가 B보다 커요 = A is bigger than B.
  • The thing after 보다 is the thing being compared against, not the winner.
  • TOPIK I often combines 보다 with and 훨씬: 더 좋아요, 훨씬 빨라요.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read comparison chunks aloud: 한국어가 영어보다 쉬워요, 버스보다 지하철이 더 빨라요, 오늘이 어제보다 훨씬 추워요.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I frequently tests simple comparison sentences. The particle 보다 means “than” and marks the comparison standard. In English, the order may feel different, so train yourself to identify:
  • the item being described
  • the item after 보다
  • the adjective or verb that shows the comparison
  • whether or 훨씬 makes the comparison stronger
Basic pattern:
Pattern
Meaning
Example
Translation
A가 B보다 + adjective
A is more adjective than B
사과가 바나나보다 비싸요.
Apples are more expensive than bananas.
A는 B보다 더 + adjective
A is more adjective than B
지하철은 버스보다 더 빨라요.
The subway is faster than the bus.
A가 B보다 훨씬 + adjective
A is much more adjective than B
오늘이 어제보다 훨씬 추워요.
Today is much colder than yesterday.
B보다 A가 + adjective
A is adjective compared with B
버스보다 지하철이 빨라요.
The subway is faster than the bus.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) 보다 marks the comparison standard

The noun before 보다 is the standard for comparison.
  • 사과가 바나나보다 비싸요.
    • Standard: 바나나
    • More expensive item: 사과
  • 오늘이 어제보다 추워요.
    • Standard: 어제
    • Colder time: 오늘
  • 지하철이 버스보다 빨라요.
    • Standard: 버스
    • Faster transport: 지하철

2) 더 = more

often appears before the adjective or verb.
  • 이 가방이 저 가방보다 커요.
  • 한국어가 영어보다 재미있어요.
  • 지하철이 버스보다 빨라요.
is common but not always required. These are both natural:
  • 사과가 배보다 비싸요.
  • 사과가 배보다 더 비싸요.

3) 훨씬 = much more

훨씬 makes the difference stronger.
  • 오늘이 어제보다 훨씬 추워요. = Today is much colder than yesterday.
  • 지하철이 버스보다 훨씬 빨라요. = The subway is much faster than the bus.
  • 이 문제가 저 문제보다 훨씬 어려워요. = This problem is much harder than that problem.

4) Word order can change

Korean can place the 보다 phrase before the main subject.
  • 지하철이 버스보다 빨라요.
  • 버스보다 지하철이 빨라요.
Both mean: the subway is faster than the bus. In the second sentence, 버스보다 appears first, but 지하철이 is still the faster one.

5) Common adjectives in TOPIK I comparisons

  • 크다 / 작다 = big / small
  • 많다 / 적다 = many/much / few/little
  • 빠르다 / 느리다 = fast / slow
  • 비싸다 / 싸다 = expensive / cheap
  • 쉽다 / 어렵다 = easy / difficult
  • 좋다 / 나쁘다 = good / bad
  • 가깝다 / 멀다 = near / far
  • 춥다 / 덥다 = cold / hot
  • 재미있다 / 재미없다 = interesting / boring

✅ Exam Strategy

1) Identify what comes after 보다

Ask: “Compared with what?”
  • 바나나보다 → compared with bananas
  • 어제보다 → compared with yesterday
  • 버스보다 → compared with the bus

2) Find the actual subject

Look for 이/가 or 은/는. The subject is usually what receives the adjective.
  • 버스보다 지하철이 빨라요.
    • Subject: 지하철
    • Standard: 버스
    • Meaning: subway is faster

3) Watch opposite adjectives

TOPIK distractors often flip the meaning.
  • 사과가 배보다 비싸요.
    • Correct: apples are more expensive
    • Wrong: pears are more expensive
    • Wrong: apples are cheaper

4) Treat 더 and 훨씬 as strength words

  • 더 = more
  • 훨씬 = much more
  • 조금 더 = a little more

5) Use context for implied comparison

Sometimes appears without 보다 when the comparison is clear from context.
  • 저는 커피보다 차가 좋아요. 차를 더 자주 마셔요.
    • Tea is preferred and drunk more often.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Thinking the word after 보다 is the winner

In 사과가 바나나보다 비싸요, bananas are not more expensive. Bananas are the comparison standard.

Pitfall 2: Missing reversed word order

버스보다 지하철이 빨라요 still means “the subway is faster than the bus.”

Pitfall 3: Ignoring the adjective

The adjective decides the comparison direction.
  • 크다 = bigger
  • 작다 = smaller
  • 싸다 = cheaper
  • 비싸다 = more expensive

Pitfall 4: Confusing 더 and 덜

  • 더 = more
  • 덜 = less
TOPIK I more commonly tests , but may appear in simple contexts.

Pitfall 5: Overlooking 훨씬

훨씬 means the difference is large.
  • 조금 더 추워요 = a little colder
  • 훨씬 추워요 = much colder

✅ Final Check

  • 보다 marks the comparison standard: the thing being compared against.
  • means more; 훨씬 means much more; 조금 더 means a little more.
  • In reversed order, find the subject marker 이/가 or topic marker 은/는.
  • Always check the adjective: bigger, smaller, cheaper, more expensive, faster, slower, easier, harder.
  • Do not assume the noun after 보다 is the winner.
TL;DR
  • 보다 marks the comparison standard: A는 B보다 ... = A is more ... than B.
  • means “more,” and often appears with 보다: 오늘은 어제보다 더 추워요.
  • 훨씬 means “much/far more,” so it makes the comparison stronger.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read comparison chunks aloud: 버스보다 빨라요, 어제보다 더 추워요, 한국어보다 영어가 쉬워요, 훨씬 좋아요. Listen for the noun before 보다.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I often asks you to compare people, places, prices, times, weather, food, transportation, or difficulty. The particle 보다 means “than” in comparison.
Basic meaning:
  • A는 B보다 커요. = A is bigger than B.
  • 지하철은 버스보다 빨라요. = The subway is faster than the bus.
  • 오늘은 어제보다 추워요. = Today is colder than yesterday.
The noun before 보다 is the comparison standard. In 지하철은 버스보다 빨라요, the bus is the standard, and the subway is faster.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic pattern: A는 B보다 adjective

Pattern
Meaning
Example
A는 B보다 커요
A is bigger/taller than B
형은 저보다 키가 커요.
A는 B보다 빨라요
A is faster than B
기차는 버스보다 빨라요.
A는 B보다 비싸요
A is more expensive than B
이 가방은 저 가방보다 비싸요.

2. 보다 + 더

means “more.” It often appears before the adjective or verb.
  • 오늘은 어제보다 더 더워요. = Today is hotter than yesterday.
  • 이 책은 저 책보다 더 재미있어요. = This book is more interesting than that book.
  • 저는 커피보다 차를 더 좋아해요. = I like tea more than coffee.

3. 보다 + 훨씬

훨씬 means “much/far more.” It makes the comparison stronger.
  • 지하철이 버스보다 훨씬 빨라요. = The subway is much faster than the bus.
  • 이 문제가 저 문제보다 훨씬 어려워요. = This question is much harder than that one.

4. Word order can change

Korean often allows flexible word order, but the noun before 보다 is still the comparison standard.
  • 저는 사과보다 딸기를 좋아해요. = I like strawberries more than apples.
  • 딸기를 사과보다 더 좋아해요. = I like strawberries more than apples.

5. Common comparison adjectives

  • 크다 = big/tall
  • 작다 = small/short
  • 빠르다 = fast
  • 느리다 = slow
  • 비싸다 = expensive
  • 싸다 = cheap
  • 쉽다 = easy
  • 어렵다 = difficult
  • 좋다 = good
  • 많다 = many/much

✅ Exam Strategy

1. Find the noun before 보다

Ask: “Compared to what?”
  • 버스보다 = than the bus
  • 어제보다 = than yesterday
  • 저보다 = than me
  • 한국어보다 = than Korean

2. Check the adjective

The adjective tells the direction of comparison.
  • 더 커요 = bigger/taller
  • 더 작아요 = smaller/shorter
  • 더 비싸요 = more expensive
  • 더 싸요 = cheaper

3. Watch preference sentences

With 좋아하다, the preferred item often takes 을/를.
  • 저는 커피보다 차를 더 좋아해요. = I prefer tea to coffee.
  • Standard: coffee
  • Preferred item: tea

4. Do not confuse 보다 with “to see”

보다 can mean “to see/watch” as a verb, but after a noun as a particle it means “than.”
  • 영화를 봐요. = watch a movie
  • 영화보다 드라마를 좋아해요. = like dramas more than movies

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Reversing A and B

A는 B보다 커요 means A is bigger than B, not B is bigger.

Pitfall 2: Ignoring the adjective

A는 B보다 작아요 means A is smaller than B. Do not assume every comparison means “better” or “more.”

Pitfall 3: Missing 더

보다 alone can make a comparison, but often clarifies “more.”
  • 오늘은 어제보다 추워요. = Today is colder than yesterday.
  • 오늘은 어제보다 더 추워요. = Today is even/more colder than yesterday.

Pitfall 4: Misreading 훨씬

훨씬 makes a big difference, not a small one.
