TL;DR
- 에게/한테 mark a person or animal as the receiver/target of an action: 친구에게 말해요, 동생한테 줘요.
- 하고/(이)랑 connect nouns or mean “with”: 책하고 연필, 친구랑 공부해요.
- TOPIK I often tests whether the noun is a person/animal, whether the sentence means to/for, and, or with, and whether the style is formal or conversational.
🎧 Helper Note
Read the key Korean examples aloud 2–3 times. Pay attention to the sound change between vowel-ending nouns and consonant-ending nouns: 친구랑 / 학생이랑.
🔑 The Big Picture
TOPIK I grammar questions often look simple, but particles carry the meaning of the whole sentence. In this lesson, you will master two particle groups:
- 에게 / 한테 = “to” or “for” a person/animal
- 하고 / (이)랑 = “and” between nouns, or “with” someone/something
These particles appear in everyday actions:
- 저는 친구에게 편지를 써요. = I write a letter to my friend.
- 동생한테 선물을 줬어요. = I gave a gift to my younger sibling.
- 빵하고 우유를 샀어요. = I bought bread and milk.
- 친구랑 영화를 봤어요. = I watched a movie with a friend.
For TOPIK I, the goal is not just translation. You must notice:
- Is the noun a person/animal or a place/object?
- Does the sentence need “to/for,” “and,” or “with”?
- Is the sentence formal/written or casual/conversational?
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1) 에게: “to/for” a person or animal
Use 에게 after a person or animal when that noun receives an action, information, object, or feeling.
Pattern
- 사람/동물 + 에게 + action
- 받는 사람 + 에게 + 주다 / 보내다 / 말하다 / 전화하다 / 묻다
Examples
- 선생님에게 질문했어요. = I asked the teacher a question.
- 친구에게 이메일을 보냈어요. = I sent an email to a friend.
- 고양이에게 밥을 줬어요. = I gave food to the cat.
TOPIK note: 에게 is common in written or neutral sentences. It is safe for tests.
2) 한테: conversational “to/for” a person or animal
한테 has the same basic meaning as 에게, but it sounds more conversational.
Examples
- 친구한테 전화했어요. = I called a friend.
- 엄마한테 말했어요. = I told my mom.
- 강아지한테 물을 줬어요. = I gave water to the dog.
Style difference
- 선생님에게 질문했습니다. = formal/neutral
- 친구한테 물어봤어요. = conversational
For TOPIK I, both may appear, but 에게 often feels more test-like and written.
3) 에게서 / 한테서: “from” a person
When the meaning is “from a person,” use 에게서 or 한테서.
Examples
- 친구에게서 편지를 받았어요. = I received a letter from a friend.
- 동생한테서 전화를 받았어요. = I got a call from my younger sibling.
Do not confuse:
- 친구에게 편지를 보냈어요. = I sent a letter to a friend.
- 친구에게서 편지를 받았어요. = I received a letter from a friend.
4) 하고: “and” between nouns
Use 하고 to connect nouns.
Pattern
- Noun + 하고 + Noun
- A하고 B = A and B
Examples
- 사과하고 바나나를 샀어요. = I bought apples and bananas.
- 책하고 공책이 있어요. = There are books and notebooks.
- 토요일하고 일요일에 쉬어요. = I rest on Saturday and Sunday.
Important: 하고 connects nouns, not full clauses.
- Correct: 빵하고 우유를 먹었어요.
- Not natural for TOPIK I: 저는 빵을 먹었어요 하고 우유를 마셨어요.
5) (이)랑: “and” or “with”
Use 랑 after a vowel-ending noun and 이랑 after a consonant-ending noun.
Form
- vowel-ending noun + 랑: 친구 + 랑 → 친구랑
- consonant-ending noun + 이랑: 학생 + 이랑 → 학생이랑
Meaning 1: and
- 커피랑 케이크를 먹었어요. = I had coffee and cake.
- 책이랑 연필을 샀어요. = I bought a book and a pencil.
Meaning 2: with
- 친구랑 공부했어요. = I studied with a friend.
- 가족이랑 여행 갔어요. = I traveled with my family.
The verb often tells you the meaning:
- 사과랑 바나나를 샀어요. → “and”
- 친구랑 만났어요. → “with”
6) Quick comparison table
Particle | Main meaning | Use with | Style |
에게 | to/for | person/animal | neutral/written |
한테 | to/for | person/animal | conversational |
에게서 | from | person/animal | neutral/written |
한테서 | from | person/animal | conversational |
하고 | and / with | nouns | neutral/conversational |
(이)랑 | and / with | nouns | conversational |
✅ Exam Strategy
Strategy 1: Find the role of the noun
Ask: What does the noun do in the sentence?
- Receiver: 친구___ 선물을 줬어요. → 친구에게/한테
- Source: 친구___ 선물을 받았어요. → 친구에게서/한테서
- Connected noun: 빵___ 우유를 샀어요. → 빵하고/이랑
- Companion: 친구___ 영화 봤어요. → 친구하고/랑
Strategy 2: Check noun type
For 에게/한테, the noun is usually a person or animal.
- 선생님에게, 친구한테, 고양이에게
For places, TOPIK I usually expects 에 or 에서, not 에게.
- 학교에 가요. = go to school
- 학교에서 공부해요. = study at school
Strategy 3: Use the verb as your clue
Common verbs with 에게/한테:
- 주다, 보내다, 말하다, 전화하다, 묻다, 가르치다
Common verbs with 에게서/한테서:
- 받다, 듣다, 배우다
Common verbs with 하고/(이)랑:
- 사다, 먹다, 마시다, 만나다, 가다, 공부하다, 이야기하다
Strategy 4: Watch for style
If the sentence is formal or written, 에게 is usually safer.
If the sentence is conversational, 한테 and (이)랑 may appear naturally.
⚠️ Pitfalls
Pitfall 1: Using 에게 with places
- Incorrect: 학교에게 가요.
- Correct: 학교에 가요.
에게/한테 usually attach to people or animals, not places.
Pitfall 2: Confusing “to” and “from”
- 친구에게 편지를 보냈어요. = I sent a letter to a friend.
- 친구에게서 편지를 받았어요. = I received a letter from a friend.
The verb 보내다 points to a receiver. The verb 받다 points to a source.
Pitfall 3: Forgetting 이 before 랑
If the noun ends in a consonant, use 이랑.
- 친구랑 = friend + 랑
- 학생이랑 = student + 이랑
- 책이랑 = book + 이랑
Pitfall 4: Treating 하고 as a sentence connector
하고 connects nouns in TOPIK I basics.
- Correct: 사과하고 배를 샀어요.
- Avoid: 사과를 샀어요 하고 배를 샀어요.
Pitfall 5: Missing the “with” meaning
친구랑 공부했어요 usually means “I studied with a friend,” not “I studied a friend and…”
The verb decides whether (이)랑 means “and” or “with.”
