TL;DR
- Present noun modifiers let a verb describe a noun: 가는 사람 = “the person who goes/is going.”
- Use Verb stem + 는 for present/action modifiers, regardless of batchim.
- In TOPIK I, this pattern often appears in short descriptions, signs, schedules, and reading questions asking “who/what/which one.”
🎧 Helper Note: Read every Korean example aloud. Pay special attention to the short linking sound between the verb stem and -는, such as 먹는, 읽는, 사는, and 듣는.
🔑 The Big Picture
In Korean, verbs can come before nouns to describe them. This is called the noun-modifying form or 관형사형.
In English, you might say:
- “the student who studies Korean”
- “the book that I read”
- “the place where we meet”
In Korean, the describing verb phrase comes before the noun:
- 한국어를 공부하는 학생 = the student who studies Korean
- 제가 읽는 책 = the book that I read / am reading
- 우리가 만나는 장소 = the place where we meet
For present action verbs, the key ending is:
Verb stem + 는 + noun
This pattern is very common in TOPIK I reading and listening because it lets a simple sentence contain more information.
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1. Basic form: Verb stem + 는 + noun
Remove -다 from the dictionary form, then add -는 before the noun.
Dictionary form | Stem | Modifier form | Meaning |
가다 | 가 | 가는 사람 | the person who goes / is going |
먹다 | 먹 | 먹는 음식 | the food someone eats / is eating |
보다 | 보 | 보는 영화 | the movie someone watches / is watching |
읽다 | 읽 | 읽는 책 | the book someone reads / is reading |
2. Batchim does not change the present modifier ending
For present verb modifiers, use -는 after both vowel stems and consonant stems.
- 가다 → 가는 길
- 오다 → 오는 버스
- 먹다 → 먹는 음식
- 찾다 → 찾는 사람
- 읽다 → 읽는 책
3. The modifier phrase can include objects, places, and time words
The whole phrase before the noun describes that noun.
- 커피를 마시는 사람 = the person who drinks coffee
- 도서관에서 공부하는 학생 = the student who studies at the library
- 아침에 가는 버스 = the bus that goes in the morning
- 친구에게 주는 선물 = the gift that I give to a friend
4. Be careful with descriptive verbs
This lesson focuses on action verbs. Descriptive verbs usually do not use -는 in the same way for simple present noun modification.
- 예쁘다 → 예쁜 꽃 = a pretty flower
- 크다 → 큰 가방 = a big bag
- 작다 → 작은 방 = a small room
For TOPIK I, if the word is an action someone does, expect -는. If it describes a quality, expect another modifier form such as -(으)ㄴ.
5. Common TOPIK I meaning patterns
Present noun modifiers often answer questions like:
- 어떤 사람? = What kind of person?
- 무슨 책? = What book?
- 어느 버스? = Which bus?
- 어디에 있는 장소? = What place?
- 무엇을 하는 사람? = A person doing what?
Examples:
- 지금 기다리는 사람이 많아요. = There are many people waiting now.
- 제가 자주 가는 식당은 학교 앞에 있어요. = The restaurant I often go to is in front of the school.
- 민수가 찾는 책은 한국어 책이에요. = The book Minsu is looking for is a Korean book.
✅ Exam Strategy
1. Find the noun first
When you see -는 + noun, identify the noun being described.
Example:
제가 자주 가는 식당은 김밥이 맛있어요.
- Noun: 식당
- Description: 제가 자주 가는
- Meaning: The restaurant I often go to has delicious gimbap.
2. Do not translate word by word
Korean puts the description before the noun, but English often puts it after the noun.
- 제가 읽는 책
- Literal order: I read book
- Natural meaning: the book I read / am reading
3. Use the surrounding sentence to choose the best meaning
The same Korean form can mean “does,” “is doing,” or “usually does,” depending on context.
- 지금 먹는 음식 = the food someone is eating now
- 자주 먹는 음식 = the food someone often eats
- 한국 사람이 많이 먹는 음식 = food that Korean people eat a lot
4. In multiple-choice questions, check who or what the noun refers to
TOPIK distractors often change the noun or action.
If the sentence says:
제가 매일 타는 버스는 10번 버스예요.
Correct idea: The bus I take every day is bus number 10.
Wrong distractor style: “I walk every day,” “The bus comes at 10 o’clock,” or “I take bus number 10 only today.”
⚠️ Pitfalls
Pitfall 1: Adding tense twice
Do not use a fully conjugated present ending before the noun.
- ❌ 가요 사람
- ✅ 가는 사람
Pitfall 2: Forgetting that the verb describes the noun
- 먹는 사람 = the person who eats
- 먹는 음식 = the food that someone eats
The same modifier 먹는 changes meaning depending on the noun after it.
Pitfall 3: Confusing action verbs and descriptive verbs
- 읽는 책 = the book someone reads
- 작은 책 = a small book
Do not use 작는 책 for “a small book.”
Pitfall 4: Translating every -는 as “is doing”
Sometimes it means a habitual action.
- 제가 자주 듣는 노래 = the song I often listen to
- 매일 가는 카페 = the café I go to every day

Quick Review
- Use Verb stem + 는 + noun for present action noun modifiers.
- The phrase before the noun tells you which person, thing, place, or item the sentence means.
- In TOPIK I, read from the noun outward: first find the noun, then ask, “What is describing it?”
