TL;DR
- TOPIK I action/content match questions test whether you can catch what someone does, wants, buys, orders, plans, or says is true.
- Listen for action verbs, objects, time/place words, and negative markers like 안, 못, 없어요, 아니에요.
- Use a 2-pass method: first choose quickly, then confirm with keywords and eliminate tempting distractors.
🎧 Audio Practice
Use the scripts below for TTS or partner recording. First, listen once without pausing and choose the answer. Second, listen again and underline the exact Korean words that prove the answer. For extra training, shadow the last sentence of each track and dictate one key phrase.
🔑 The Big Picture
In TOPIK I Listening, “Action & Content Match” questions ask you to connect a short spoken text with the correct picture, action, object, plan, or statement. The Korean is usually simple, but the answer choices are designed to make you confuse:
- similar actions: 사요 vs 팔아요, 가요 vs 와요, 앉아요 vs 서요
- similar objects: 우유 vs 물, 책 vs 공책, 버스 vs 지하철
- similar timing: 지금, 오늘, 내일, 주말에
- positive/negative meaning: 있어요 vs 없어요, 좋아해요 vs 안 좋아해요
For TOPIK I, your goal is not to translate every word. Your goal is to catch the core action + object + situation quickly.
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1) Action verbs are the answer engine
Many correct answers depend on one verb.
Meaning | Common Korean cue | Listen for |
buy | 사요, 샀어요 | What is bought? |
eat/drink | 먹어요, 마셔요 | Food or drink object |
go/come | 가요, 와요 | Direction and place |
read/write | 읽어요, 써요 | Book, letter, name, homework |
call/talk | 전화해요, 말해요 | Who talks to whom? |
wait/meet | 기다려요, 만나요 | Person, time, place |
2) Object words confirm the picture or statement
If the question asks “What is the person doing?” the action matters most. If it asks “What is correct?” the object can be the key.
- 커피를 마셔요 → drinking coffee, not water
- 책을 읽어요 → reading a book, not writing homework
- 우산을 가져가요 → taking an umbrella, not buying one
3) Negative words reverse the obvious choice
TOPIK I distractors often use the positive version of what you heard.
- 시간이 없어요 → They do not have time.
- 저는 고기를 안 먹어요 → They do not eat meat.
- 오늘은 학교에 안 가요 → They are not going to school today.
- 아직 숙제를 못 했어요 → They could not do the homework yet.
4) Time and place words decide close choices
When two options both feel possible, check time/place.
- 오늘 vs 내일
- 아침 vs 저녁
- 집에서 vs 학교에서
- 버스 정류장 vs 지하철역
- 식당 vs 카페
✅ Exam Strategy
Use the 2-pass method
- First pass: answer without pausing. Catch action + object.
- Second pass: confirm with keywords, time/place, and negative markers.
- Optional dictation/shadowing: write or repeat the sentence that proves the answer.
What to mark while listening
- Verb: 사요 / 먹어요 / 가요 / 기다려요
- Object: 책 / 커피 / 우산 / 표
- Time: 오늘 / 내일 / 지금 / 주말
- Place: 집 / 학교 / 회사 / 식당
- Negation: 안 / 못 / 없어요 / 아니에요
Elimination order
- Remove answers with the wrong action.
- Remove answers with the wrong object.
- Remove answers with the wrong time/place.
- Check if a negative marker changes the meaning.
⚠️ Pitfalls
- Choosing a word you heard but missing the action: Hearing “커피” does not always mean “drinking coffee.” The person may be buying coffee.
- Ignoring negatives: “시간이 없어요” is often tested against “has time.”
- Confusing speaker roles: In dialogues, one speaker may ask a question and the other gives the real answer.
- Overthinking simple lines: TOPIK I often rewards direct listening. If you hear “저는 도서관에 가요,” the answer is probably “goes to the library.”
- Mixing up similar places: 학교, 회사, 집, 도서관, 식당, 카페 appear often and must be automatic.
🧠 Quick Listening Template
When you hear a short track, mentally fill this in:
- Who? 남자 / 여자 / 학생 / 친구
- Does what? 가요 / 사요 / 먹어요 / 기다려요
- What or where? 책 / 우산 / 학교 / 식당
- When? 오늘 / 내일 / 지금 / 주말
- Any negative? 안 / 못 / 없어요

✅ Final Review Checklist
- Catch the verb before looking at answer choices.
- Confirm the object and place/time.
- Watch for 안, 못, 없어요, 아니에요.
- In dialogues, use the answer speaker’s final information, not only the first question.
- After each wrong answer, write the one Korean phrase that would have made the correct answer obvious.
TL;DR
- Match the speaker’s real action or the statement that is true according to the audio, not just a repeated word.
- Listen for action cues:
-겠어요,-(으)세요,-(으)러 가요,-(으)ㄹ 거예요,지금/먼저/나중에.
- Use the 2-pass method: first answer by meaning, then confirm with keywords and distractor traps.
🎧 Audio Practice
Use each
Track as a short TTS script. First pass: play once and choose an answer without pausing. Second pass: replay and underline the action/content cue. Optional: shadow the final sentence because TOPIK I often places the answer near the end.🔑 The Big Picture
In TOPIK I listening, action match and content match questions test whether you can connect simple spoken Korean to the correct meaning.
You are usually asked one of these:
- Action match: What will the person do? What is the person doing? What should the person do next?
- Content match: Which statement is correct? What did the speaker say?
- Picture/chart match: Which picture, item, time, place, or action matches the audio?
The trap is that choices often reuse familiar words from the audio but change the action, time, person, or object.
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1) Action endings that reveal the answer
-(으)ㄹ 거예요= will do:도서관에 갈 거예요.
-겠어요= will/intend to do:제가 전화하겠어요.
-(으)세요= command/request:여기에 이름을 쓰세요.
-(으)러 가다/오다= go/come to do:빵을 사러 가요.
-고 있다= be doing now:책을 읽고 있어요.
-아/어야 하다= must do:숙제를 해야 해요.
2) Content-match cues
Listen for:
- Time:
오늘,내일,아침,오후,지금,먼저,나중에
- Place:
학교,은행,식당,우체국,도서관
- Object:
표,우유,책,가방,사진
- Reason:
비가 와서,아파서,시간이 없어서
- Contrast:
하지만,그런데,아니요
3) Common TOPIK I script shapes
- Request → response:
창문 좀 닫아 주세요./네, 닫을게요.
- Problem → action:
지갑이 없어요./그럼 집에 전화해 보세요.
- Plan → time/place:
내일 세 시에 영화관 앞에서 만나요.
- Correction:
아니요, 오늘이 아니라 내일 가요.
✅ Exam Strategy
- Predict the action before reading choices. Ask: “What is the final action?”
- Confirm who does it. In TOPIK I, the wrong answer may give the right action to the wrong person.
- Mark time words.
지금,나중에,내일often decide the answer.
- Beware repeated-word traps. If the audio says
커피, a wrong choice may be “buys coffee” even if the speaker says they already drank coffee.
- For content match, eliminate false details first. One incorrect place/time/object is enough to remove a choice.
⚠️ Pitfalls
- Choosing a word you heard instead of the action: hearing
우산does not always mean “buy an umbrella.”
- Missing negative or correction words:
안,못,아니요,말고.
- Ignoring sequence words:
먼저and그리고show order.
- Confusing request and result:
문을 열어 주세요means the listener should open the door.
- Confusing present and future:
먹고 있어요vs.먹을 거예요.
