💡
TL;DR
  • -(으)려고 하다 means “intend to / plan to” and is used with action verbs.
  • Use -려고 하다 after vowel-ending verb stems and -으려고 하다 after consonant-ending verb stems.
  • In TOPIK I, this pattern often appears in questions about plans, purposes, and near-future intentions.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read every Korean example aloud twice: first for meaning, then for rhythm. Pay special attention to how 가려고, 먹으려고, and 공부하려고 connect smoothly into 하다.

🔑 The Big Picture

-(으)려고 하다 expresses a speaker’s intention, plan, or preparation to do an action. It is especially useful for TOPIK I because many everyday situations involve asking what someone is going to do: study, meet a friend, buy something, travel, rest, or prepare for an exam.
This pattern is close to “I’m going to…” or “I’m planning to…,” but it emphasizes intention before the action happens.
  • 저는 내일 친구를 만나려고 해요.
    • I’m planning to meet a friend tomorrow.
  • 주말에 집에서 쉬려고 해요.
    • I’m going to rest at home this weekend.
  • 한국어 시험을 보려고 해요.
    • I’m planning to take the Korean test.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Basic form

Attach -(으)려고 하다 to an action verb stem.
Verb stem type
Pattern
Example
Ends in a vowel
-려고 하다
가다 → 가려고 해요
Ends in a consonant
-으려고 하다
먹다 → 먹으려고 해요
Ends in ㄹ
-려고 하다
살다 → 살려고 해요

2. Common TOPIK I examples

  • 보다 → 보려고 해요: I plan to watch/see/take.
  • 사다 → 사려고 해요: I plan to buy.
  • 읽다 → 읽으려고 해요: I plan to read.
  • 찾다 → 찾으려고 해요: I plan to look for.
  • 만들다 → 만들려고 해요: I plan to make.
  • 공부하다 → 공부하려고 해요: I plan to study.

3. Negative forms

There are two common ways to make the sentence negative.
  • 안 + verb + -(으)려고 하다
    • 오늘은 밖에 안 나가려고 해요.
I’m not planning to go out today.
  • verb + -지 않으려고 하다
    • 밤에는 커피를 마시지 않으려고 해요.
I’m trying not to drink coffee at night.
For TOPIK I, 안 + verb + -(으)려고 하다 is often easier and more common.

4. Question form

Use it to ask about someone’s plan.
  • 주말에 뭐 하려고 해요?
    • What are you planning to do this weekend?
  • 어디에 가려고 해요?
    • Where are you planning to go?
  • 무엇을 먹으려고 해요?
    • What are you planning to eat?

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Look for time words. Words like 내일, 주말, 이번 방학, 오늘 오후, and 다음 주 often signal a plan.
  1. Check whether the verb is an action. 먹다, 가다, 공부하다, and 만나다 work naturally. Descriptive verbs like 예쁘다 or 춥다 usually do not use this pattern to show intention.
  1. Choose the right connector by final sound.
      • vowel stem: 가다 → 가려고
      • consonant stem: 읽다 → 읽으려고
      • ㄹ stem: 만들다 → 만들려고
  1. Match the meaning. If the sentence means “plan/intend to,” -(으)려고 하다 is usually the best choice.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not attach the pattern to a noun directly.
    • ❌ 학생려고 해요 → ✅ 학생이 되려고 해요
  • Do not use -으려고 after a vowel-ending stem.
    • ❌ 가으려고 해요 → ✅ 가려고 해요
  • Do not forget that 하다 becomes 하려고 하다.
    • 공부하다 → 공부하려고 해요
  • Do not confuse intention with simple future prediction.
    • 비가 오려고 해요 can mean “It looks like it is about to rain,” but for TOPIK I, focus first on human plans and intentions.

Wrap-up

For TOPIK I, master the meaning first: -(으)려고 하다 shows a plan or intention. Then train the form until it becomes automatic: vowel + -려고, consonant + -으려고, and 하다 → 하려고. When you see a question about tomorrow, the weekend, vacation, or a reason for preparing something, look for this pattern.
