TL;DR
  • Frequency adverbs tell how often something happens: 항상 always, 가끔 sometimes.
  • 전혀 and 절대 usually need a negative ending such as , , -지 않다, or -지 못하다.
  • In TOPIK I, check both the adverb meaning and whether the sentence ending matches it.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read the Korean example sentences aloud. Pay special attention to the rhythm of the adverb before the verb phrase: 항상 운동해요, 가끔 먹어요, 전혀 몰라요, 절대 안 가요.

🔑 The Big Picture

Frequency adverbs help you describe habits, routines, and how often an action happens. TOPIK I often tests them in short dialogues, diary-style reading passages, and grammar-choice questions.
The four key words in this lesson are:
Adverb
Core meaning
Typical sentence pattern
Example
항상
always
positive or negative sentence
저는 항상 아침을 먹어요.
가끔
sometimes
positive or negative sentence
저는 가끔 영화를 봐요.
전혀
not at all
usually negative sentence
저는 김치를 전혀 못 먹어요.
절대
never; absolutely not
usually negative sentence
저는 절대 늦지 않아요.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. 항상 = always

Use 항상 for something that happens all the time or is true as a regular habit.
  • 저는 항상 7시에 일어나요.
    • I always get up at 7.
  • 선생님은 항상 친절해요.
    • The teacher is always kind.
  • 이 식당은 항상 사람이 많아요.
    • This restaurant is always crowded.
항상 can also appear in a negative sentence, but the meaning becomes “always not / never does in practice.”
  • 저는 아침에 항상 커피를 안 마셔요.
    • I always do not drink coffee in the morning. → I never drink coffee in the morning as a habit.

2. 가끔 = sometimes

Use 가끔 for an action that happens occasionally, not every day.
  • 저는 주말에 가끔 등산해요.
    • I sometimes hike on weekends.
  • 동생은 가끔 늦게 자요.
    • My younger sibling sometimes sleeps late.
  • 우리는 가끔 한국 음식을 만들어요.
    • We sometimes make Korean food.

3. 전혀 = not at all

전혀 strongly means “not at all,” so it normally needs a negative expression.
Natural patterns:
  • 전혀 안 + verb/adjective
  • 전혀 못 + verb
  • 전혀 + verb/adjective + -지 않다
  • 전혀 + verb + -지 못하다
  • 전혀 모르다
Examples:
  • 저는 그 사람을 전혀 몰라요.
    • I don’t know that person at all.
  • 이 음식은 전혀 맵지 않아요.
    • This food is not spicy at all.
  • 저는 수영을 전혀 못해요.
    • I can’t swim at all.

4. 절대 = never / absolutely not

절대 is stronger than 전혀 in many everyday sentences. It often shows a rule, promise, warning, refusal, or strong decision.
Natural patterns:
  • 절대 안 + verb/adjective
  • 절대 못 + verb
  • 절대 + verb/adjective + -지 않다
  • 절대 + verb + -지 못하다
Examples:
  • 시험 시간에는 절대 말하면 안 돼요.
    • During the test, you must never talk.
  • 저는 약속을 절대 잊지 않아요.
    • I never forget appointments.
  • 밤에는 이 길로 절대 가지 마세요.
    • At night, never go this way.

Quick contrast

  • 항상: 100% or nearly 100% frequency
  • 가끔: occasional frequency
  • 전혀: 0% degree/ability/knowledge, used with negatives
  • 절대: 0% action allowed/intended, strong negative or prohibition

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Check the ending first.
    1. If the sentence has , , -지 않다, -지 못하다, or 모르다, 전혀 or 절대 may fit.
  1. Match the situation.
      • Daily habit → 항상
      • Occasional habit → 가끔
      • No knowledge, no ability, no degree → 전혀
      • Strong promise, rule, warning, or prohibition → 절대
  1. Avoid translating word-by-word.
    1. English “never” may be 전혀 ... 안/못 or 절대 ... 안/못 depending on the nuance.
  1. In dialogue questions, listen for contrast.
    1. If one speaker says “Do you often…?” and the answer is “No, not at all,” expect 전혀.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Using 전혀 with a positive sentence
    • Awkward: 저는 한국어를 전혀 잘해요.
    • Natural: 저는 한국어를 전혀 잘하지 못해요.
  • Using 절대 when the sentence is only about degree
    • Less natural: 이 음식은 절대 맵지 않아요.
    • More natural: 이 음식은 전혀 맵지 않아요.
  • Confusing 항상 and 가끔
    • 항상: every time / always
    • 가끔: sometimes / occasionally
  • Forgetting that 절대 is strong
    • 절대 가지 마세요 sounds like a serious warning.
    • For a simple habit, use 가끔, 자주, or 항상 instead.
