💡
TL;DR
  • Use V-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다 to say “I should have…” after making a past choice you regret.
  • Use A/V-았/었으면 좋겠다 to say “I hope…” or “I wish…” about a desired situation.
  • In TOPIK-style questions, watch the time clue: regret looks back; wishes point to a hoped-for result.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read every Korean example aloud twice. First, focus on the ending: -ㄹ걸 그랬어요 / -았으면 좋겠어요. Second, read the whole sentence naturally so the feeling of regret or wish becomes clear.

🔑 The Big Picture

Two useful Korean expressions help you talk about things that did not go the way you wanted:
  • V-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다 = “I should have done V.” It shows regret about a past decision.
  • A/V-았/었으면 좋겠다 = “I hope/wish A/V.” It shows a desired situation.
These appear often in everyday Korean and can appear in TOPIK I-style reading or listening contexts through simple dialogues, short messages, and sentence-completion questions.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. V-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다: regret about the past

Use this when the speaker thinks a different past action would have been better.
Form
  • Verb stem ending in a vowel + -ㄹ걸 그랬다
    • 가다 → 갈걸 그랬어요
    • 사다 → 살걸 그랬어요
  • Verb stem ending in a consonant + -을걸 그랬다
    • 먹다 → 먹을걸 그랬어요
    • 입다 → 입을걸 그랬어요
  • To say “I should not have…,” use -지 말걸 그랬다 or 안 V-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다
    • 너무 많이 먹지 말걸 그랬어요. = I should not have eaten so much.
Examples
  • 비가 와요. 우산을 가져올걸 그랬어요.
    • It is raining. I should have brought an umbrella.
  • 시험이 어려웠어요. 더 많이 공부할걸 그랬어요.
    • The exam was difficult. I should have studied more.
  • 이 신발은 불편해요. 다른 신발을 신을걸 그랬어요.
    • These shoes are uncomfortable. I should have worn different shoes.

2. A/V-았/었으면 좋겠다: hopes and wishes

Use this when the speaker wants something to be true or wants something to happen.
Form
  • Stem with ㅏ/ㅗ + -았으면 좋겠다
    • 가다 → 갔으면 좋겠어요
    • 좋다 → 좋았으면 좋겠어요
  • Other stems + -었으면 좋겠다
    • 먹다 → 먹었으면 좋겠어요
    • 춥다 → 추웠으면 좋겠어요
  • 하다 → 했으면 좋겠다
    • 공부하다 → 공부했으면 좋겠어요
Examples
  • 내일 날씨가 좋았으면 좋겠어요.
    • I hope the weather is good tomorrow.
  • 친구가 빨리 왔으면 좋겠어요.
    • I hope my friend comes soon.
  • 한국어를 더 잘 했으면 좋겠어요.
    • I wish I were better at Korean.

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Find the time clue.
      • Past bad result: use V-(으)ㄹ걸 그랬다
      • Desired future or current hope: use A/V-았/었으면 좋겠다
  1. Check whether the word is a verb or adjective.
      • -을걸 그랬다 attaches to verbs only.
      • -았/었으면 좋겠다 can attach to verbs and adjectives.
  1. Watch negative meaning.
      • “I should not have gone” = 가지 말걸 그랬어요
      • “I hope it does not rain” = 비가 안 왔으면 좋겠어요
  1. Use polite style in TOPIK I contexts.
      • 그랬어요 / 좋겠어요 is safe and natural for most dialogues.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Do not use -을걸 그랬다 for a normal future plan.
    • Incorrect: 내일 학교에 갈걸 그랬어요.
    • Better: 내일 학교에 갈 거예요.
  • Do not forget the past-result feeling in 그랬다. The speaker regrets something after seeing the result.
  • Do not translate -았/었으면 좋겠다 too literally as “if it was good.” It often means “I hope…” or “I wish…”
  • With adjective stems, use -았/었으면 좋겠다, not -을걸 그랬다.
    • Correct: 날씨가 좋았으면 좋겠어요.
    • Incorrect: 날씨가 좋을걸 그랬어요.
