TL;DR
  • 마다 means “every/each” and marks the repeated time, place, or member of a group.
  • means “each/apiece/at a time” and marks the repeated quantity or amount.
  • In TOPIK I, the safest pattern is often N마다 + number/counter + 씩: 날마다 두 시간씩, 학생마다 한 개씩.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read the Korean examples aloud twice. Pay special attention to the rhythm of 마다 after nouns and after quantities: 날마다 / 두 시간씩, 사람마다 / 한 명씩.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I often tests whether you can connect a sentence’s repetition idea with the correct grammar marker.
  • Use 마다 when the sentence means every N or each N.
    • 아침마다 운동해요. = I exercise every morning.
    • 나라마다 문화가 달라요. = Culture is different in each country.
  • Use when the sentence means a certain amount each time/person/group.
    • 하루에 두 시간씩 공부해요. = I study two hours each day.
    • 사과를 한 개씩 먹었어요. = We ate one apple each / one at a time.
  • Use both when you need both meanings:
    • 학생마다 사과를 한 개씩 받았어요. = Each student received one apple each.
    • 날마다 한국어를 30분씩 들어요. = Every day, I listen to Korean for 30 minutes each time.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) N마다 = every / each N

Attach 마다 directly to a noun.
Pattern
Meaning
Example
N마다
every N / each N
주말마다 영화를 봐요. = I watch movies every weekend.
Common nouns before 마다:
  • Time: 아침마다, 날마다, 주말마다, 해마다
  • Places/groups: 학교마다, 나라마다, 사람마다, 집마다
  • Repeated events: 수업마다, 시험마다, 회의마다

2) quantity + 씩 = each / apiece / at a time

Attach after a number, amount, or counter phrase.
Pattern
Meaning
Example
number/counter + 씩
each / apiece
학생들이 사과를 두 개씩 받았어요. = The students received two apples each.
amount + 씩
by that amount each time
조금씩 좋아지고 있어요. = It is getting better little by little.
Common phrases with :
  • 한 개씩 = one each / one at a time
  • 두 명씩 = two people each / two at a time
  • 조금씩 = little by little
  • 하루에 한 시간씩 = one hour a day
  • 일주일에 세 번씩 = three times a week

3) Combined pattern: N마다 + quantity + 씩

This is very common in TOPIK I.
Pattern
Meaning
Example
N마다 + quantity + 씩
for every N, the same quantity
방마다 의자가 두 개씩 있어요. = There are two chairs in each room.
More examples:
  • 아이마다 우유를 한 병씩 줬어요. = I gave one bottle of milk to each child.
  • 수업마다 단어를 열 개씩 외워요. = I memorize ten words in each class.
  • 주말마다 친구를 두 명씩 만나요. = I meet two friends each weekend.

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1: Find what is repeating

Ask: “What repeats?”
  • If a time/place/person/group repeats → likely 마다
    • every morning, each country, every class
  • If a quantity/amount repeats → likely
    • one each, two at a time, 30 minutes each day

Step 2: Check the word before the blank

  • Blank after a noun like 아침___, 주말___, 사람___ → often 마다
  • Blank after a quantity like 한 개___, 두 명___, 30분___ → often

Step 3: Watch for combined meaning

If the sentence has both:
  • a repeated unit: 학생, ,
  • a repeated amount: 한 개, 두 시간, 세 명
Then choose both correctly:
  • 학생마다 한 개씩
  • 날마다 두 시간씩
  • 방마다 의자 두 개씩

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Putting after the repeating noun

Incorrect: 학생씩 사과를 받았어요.
Correct: 학생마다 사과를 한 개씩 받았어요.
Why: 학생 is the repeated group member, so use 마다. The amount 한 개 takes .

Pitfall 2: Using 마다 after the quantity

Incorrect: 사과를 한 개마다 받았어요.
Correct: 사과를 한 개씩 받았어요.
Why: 한 개 is the amount distributed each time/person, so use .

Pitfall 3: Confusing 하루마다 and 하루에

Both can be natural, but the focus changes.
  • 하루마다 운동해요. = I exercise every day.
  • 하루에 한 시간씩 운동해요. = I exercise one hour a day.
For TOPIK I, if the sentence has an amount, often appears with 하루에, 일주일에, or another frequency phrase.

Pitfall 4: Misreading 두 명마다

두 명마다 means “for every two people” as a grouping interval.
두 명씩 means “two people each / two people at a time.”
  • 두 명씩 들어오세요. = Please come in two at a time.
  • 두 명마다 책상이 하나 있어요. = There is one desk for every two people.
