TL;DR
  • Degree adverbs tell how strong an adjective or verb is: 매우/아주/무척 = very, 상당히/꽤 = quite, 조금/약간 = a little.
  • On TOPIK I, match the adverb with the sentence meaning: strong positive/negative, moderate degree, or small amount.
  • Watch context clues such as price, weather, difficulty, health, emotions, and comparison words.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read the key chunks aloud: 아주 좋아요, 매우 추워요, 상당히 어려워요, 꽤 멀어요, 조금 아파요, 약간 비싸요. The adverb usually comes right before the word it strengthens.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I frequently uses degree adverbs in short conversations and reading passages. These words help you understand whether something is very, quite, or a little.
Common examples:
  • 오늘은 아주 추워요. = Today is very cold.
  • 이 문제는 상당히 어려워요. = This question is quite difficult.
  • 배가 조금 아파요. = My stomach hurts a little.
  • 그 식당은 꽤 유명해요. = That restaurant is quite famous.
Degree adverbs are important because one small word can change the whole answer. 조금 비싸요 and 매우 비싸요 both mean “expensive,” but the strength is different.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. Strong degree: very / extremely

Use these when the meaning is strong.
Adverb
Meaning
Common style
Example
아주
very
common, neutral
아주 좋아요 = very good
매우
very / highly
a little more formal
매우 중요해요 = very important
무척
very / extremely
emotional/emphatic
무척 기뻐요 = very happy
너무
too / very
common in speech
너무 추워요 = very/too cold

2. Moderate degree: quite / fairly

Use these when something is more than “a little,” but not necessarily extreme.
  • 상당히 = quite, considerably
    • 이 책은 상당히 어려워요. = This book is quite difficult.
  • = quite, pretty
    • 여기에서 학교까지 꽤 멀어요. = It is quite far from here to school.

3. Small degree: a little / slightly

Use these when the degree is small.
  • 조금 = a little
    • 조금 피곤해요. = I am a little tired.
  • = a little; shortened spoken form of 조금
    • 좀 쉬고 싶어요. = I want to rest a little.
  • 약간 = slightly
    • 약간 매워요. = It is slightly spicy.

4. Placement

Degree adverbs usually come before the adjective or verb they modify.
  • 아주 + 좋아요아주 좋아요
  • 조금 + 비싸요조금 비싸요
  • 꽤 + 멀어요꽤 멀어요
  • 매우 + 중요합니다매우 중요합니다

5. Positive and negative meanings

Degree adverbs can intensify both positive and negative words.
Positive:
  • 아주 맛있어요. = very delicious
  • 무척 재미있어요. = very interesting
Negative:
  • 매우 어렵습니다. = very difficult
  • 조금 불편해요. = a little inconvenient
  • 너무 비싸요. = too expensive / very expensive

✅ Exam Strategy

1. Check the strength needed

Ask: “Does the sentence need strong, moderate, or small degree?”
  • Strong: 매우, 아주, 무척, 너무
  • Moderate: 상당히,
  • Small: 조금, , 약간

2. Use the surrounding situation

TOPIK I gives context:
  • 시험이 어려워서 많이 틀렸어요. → strong difficulty may fit.
  • 괜찮지만 조금 매워요. → small degree fits.
  • 걸어서 40분 걸려요.꽤 멀어요 may fit.

3. Watch formal vs casual style

In notices or formal passages, 매우 and 상당히 may appear more often.
In conversations, 아주, 너무, 조금, and are very common.

4. Do not ignore “too”

너무 can mean “too” when the result is negative:
  • 너무 비싸서 못 샀어요. = It was too expensive, so I could not buy it.
But in daily speech, it can also simply mean “very”:
  • 너무 좋아요. = It is really good.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Treating all degree adverbs as the same

조금 춥다 and 매우 춥다 are different. One is mild; the other is strong.

Pitfall 2: Using a strong adverb with a small-degree clue

If the sentence says 괜찮지만 ___ 아파요, 조금 is more natural than 매우.

Pitfall 3: Misreading 꽤

means “quite/pretty,” not “a little.” It is stronger than 조금.

Pitfall 4: Missing the result clause

If the sentence says 너무 비싸서 안 샀어요, the reason for not buying is the high price.

🧠 Quick Review

  • Strong degree: 아주, 매우, 무척, 너무
  • Moderate degree: 상당히, 꽤
  • Small degree: 조금, 좀, 약간
  • In TOPIK I, match the adverb with the context: strong result, moderate description, or mild feeling.
TL;DR
  • Degree adverbs show intensity: 조금 = a little, 꽤/상당히 = quite, 매우/무척/아주 = very.
  • They usually come before adjectives or descriptive verbs: 조금 추워요, 매우 좋아요, 무척 바빠요.
  • TOPIK I often tests whether the sentence needs a weak, medium, or strong degree.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read the scale aloud: 조금 추워요 → 꽤 추워요 → 매우 추워요. Repeat with 바빠요, 어려워요, 맛있어요 to feel the intensity change.

🔑 The Big Picture

Degree adverbs help you understand how strong a feeling, condition, or description is. TOPIK I uses them in everyday sentences about weather, food, study, health, shopping, and opinions.
Core scale:
  • 조금 = a little / slightly
  • = a little / somewhat, common spoken form
  • = quite / fairly
  • 상당히 = quite / considerably, more formal
  • 아주 = very
  • 매우 = very, formal/written
  • 무척 = very / extremely, expressive
Examples:
  • 오늘은 조금 추워요. = It is a little cold today.
  • 이 문제는 어려워요. = This question is quite difficult.
  • 한국어 공부가 매우 재미있어요. = Studying Korean is very interesting.
  • 어제는 무척 피곤했어요. = I was very tired yesterday.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) Degree adverb + adjective/descriptive verb

Degree adverbs usually come before the word they describe.
Degree
Adverb
Example
low
조금 / 좀
조금 비싸요.
medium-high
꽤 / 상당히
꽤 멀어요.
high
아주 / 매우 / 무척
매우 중요해요.

2) 조금 vs 좀

is the shortened spoken form of 조금.
  • 조금 기다려 주세요. = Please wait a little.
  • 좀 기다려 주세요. = Please wait a bit. (common in conversation)

3) 매우, 아주, 무척

All can mean “very,” but they have slightly different feeling.
  • 아주: common and natural in speech and writing
  • 매우: more formal, common in tests/notices
  • 무척: expressive, often with feelings or conditions

4) 상당히 and 꽤

Both mean “quite/fairly/considerably.”
  • 꽤 좋아요. = It is quite good.
  • 상당히 어려워요. = It is quite difficult / considerably difficult.

✅ Exam Strategy

1) Look at intensity clues

If the sentence has a strong feeling or strong result, choose 매우/무척/아주.
  • 시험이 ___ 어려웠어요. 그래서 많이 공부했어요. → 매우 / 무척

2) Use 조금 for small amounts or soft requests

  • 조금 쉬고 싶어요.
  • 물을 조금 마셨어요.
  • 조금 기다려 주세요.

3) Watch formal reading passages

In more formal TOPIK I passages, 매우 and 상당히 appear often.
  • 이 행사는 매우 중요합니다.
  • 교통이 상당히 복잡합니다.

4) Do not use degree adverbs as nouns

Degree adverbs describe another word. They usually need an adjective, verb, or amount after them.

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Confusing 조금 and 매우

  • 조금 = small degree
  • 매우 = strong degree

Pitfall 2: Missing the tone of 상당히

상당히 is not just “a little.” It means a noticeable or considerable degree.

Pitfall 3: Overusing 무척 in formal notices

무척 is natural, but 매우/상당히 often sound more formal in written notices.

Pitfall 4: Ignoring context

조금 비싸요 may still be acceptable, but 매우 비싸요 means the price is much higher. Choose based on the situation.

  • TOPIK I often tests whether the degree matches the adjective: 매우 춥다, 조금 비싸다, 상당히 멀다.
  • Watch the strength: 매우/무척/아주 = very, 상당히 = quite/considerably, 조금 = a little.

🎧 Helper Note: Read the chunks aloud in pairs: 매우 추워요, 무척 바빠요, 상당히 멀어요, 조금 비싸요, 아주 맛있어요. Listen for the adverb before the adjective.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) 매우 = very

매우 is a formal and clear “very.” It is common in written passages, notices, and informational text.
  • 오늘은 날씨가 매우 춥습니다.
  • 이 문제는 매우 쉽습니다.
  • 그 식당은 매우 유명합니다.
TOPIK clue: 매우 often appears with adjectives like 춥다, 덥다, 쉽다, 어렵다, 좋다, 중요하다.

2) 무척 = very / extremely

무척 is also strong. It often appears in descriptions of feelings, weather, or impressions.
  • 어제는 무척 바빴어요.
  • 이 영화는 무척 재미있었어요.
  • 친구를 만나서 무척 기뻤어요.
무척 and 매우 are often similar in TOPIK I.

3) 아주 = very

아주 is common in everyday Korean.
  • 음식이 아주 맛있어요.
  • 방이 아주 깨끗해요.
  • 한국어 수업이 아주 재미있어요.
TOPIK I dialogues often use 아주 because it sounds natural in conversation.

4) 상당히 = quite / considerably

상당히 means more than “a little,” but sometimes less emotional than 매우/무척. It is useful in informational descriptions.
  • 학교에서 집까지 상당히 멀어요.
  • 이 책은 상당히 어려워요.
  • 오늘 백화점에 사람이 상당히 많아요.

5) 조금 = a little / slightly

조금 makes the description weaker or smaller.
  • 이 옷은 조금 비싸요.
  • 오늘은 조금 피곤해요.
  • 방이 조금 작아요.
  • 시간이 조금 있어요.
조금 can soften a negative opinion:
  • 음식이 조금 짜요. = The food is a little salty.
  • 길이 조금 복잡해요. = The road is a little complicated.

6) Degree adverbs and negatives

Degree adverbs can appear with negative expressions too.
  • 별로 안 비싸요. = not very expensive
  • 조금 안 좋아요. = a little not good / not very good
  • 매우 어렵지 않아요. = not very difficult
For TOPIK I, the most common contrast is:
  • 매우/아주/무척 = strong
  • 조금 = weak

✅ Exam Strategy

1) Identify the strength

When answer choices include degree words, ask: “Is the meaning strong or weak?”
  • 매우 춥다 = very cold
  • 조금 춥다 = a little cold
  • 상당히 춥다 = quite cold

2) Match the passage exactly

If the passage says 조금 비싸요, do not choose “very expensive.”
If it says 매우 중요합니다, do not choose “a little important.”

3) Watch adjective clues

Degree adverbs often describe:
  • weather: 춥다, 덥다, 따뜻하다
  • emotion: 기쁘다, 슬프다, 피곤하다
  • difficulty: 쉽다, 어렵다, 복잡하다
  • quality: 좋다, 맛있다, 깨끗하다
  • amount/distance: 많다, 적다, 멀다, 가깝다

4) Distinguish 상당히 from 조금

Both can sound less direct than 매우, but they are different.
  • 상당히 멀어요 = quite far
  • 조금 멀어요 = a little far

5) Use context to infer tone

In a complaint, 조금 may still indicate a problem:
  • 방이 조금 추워요. = The room is a little cold.
The correct answer should still show “cold,” but not “very cold.”

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Treating 조금 as very

조금 means a little. It is not a strong degree word.
  • 조금 비싸요 = a little expensive
  • 매우 비싸요 = very expensive

Pitfall 2: Ignoring the adverb

If two answers have the same adjective, the degree may decide the answer.
  • very difficult vs a little difficult
  • quite far vs very near

Pitfall 3: Thinking 상당히 means “small amount”

상당히 means quite/considerably. It is stronger than 조금.
  • 상당히 많아요 = quite a lot
  • 조금 많아요 = a little much

Pitfall 4: Confusing 너무 with positive “very”

너무 can mean “too” or “very” in everyday speech. In TOPIK I, pay attention to whether it sounds excessive.
  • 너무 비싸요 = too expensive / very expensive
  • 너무 늦었어요 = too late

Pitfall 5: Missing negative words

  • 별로 안 어려워요 = not very difficult
  • 매우 어려워요 = very difficult
These are opposite meanings.
