TL;DR
  • 지만 connects two contrasting ideas: “but / although.”
  • (으)면 connects a condition and result: “if / when.”
  • TOPIK I often tests which connector matches the sentence logic: contrast or condition.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read every Korean example aloud twice. First, read only the verb/adjective before the connector. Second, read the full sentence and listen for the logic: contrast for 지만, condition for (으)면.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I connective grammar questions often look simple, but they test whether you understand the relationship between two clauses.
In this lesson, focus on two high-frequency connectors:
  • 지만 = contrast: “but,” “although”
  • (으)면 = condition: “if,” “when”
The key is not only conjugation. You must decide what the sentence means.
Connector
Main meaning
Logic
Example
지만
but / although
A is true, but B is different or opposite
비싸지만 맛있어요. = It is expensive, but delicious.
(으)면
if / when
If A happens, B happens
시간이 있으면 만나요. = If you have time, let’s meet.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) 지만: contrast

Use 지만 when the second clause contrasts with the first clause.
Pattern
  • Verb/adjective stem + 지만
  • Noun + 이지만 / 지만
Examples
  • 날씨가 춥지만 산책해요.
    • = The weather is cold, but I take a walk.
  • 이 가방은 작지만 편해요.
    • = This bag is small, but convenient.
  • 저는 학생이지만 회사에도 다녀요.
    • = I am a student, but I also work at a company.
TOPIK clue words
  • 비싸다 → 좋다 / 맛있다 / 사고 싶다
  • 춥다 → 가다 / 하다
  • 어렵다 → 재미있다 / 배우다
  • 작다 → 편하다 / 좋다

2) (으)면: condition

Use (으)면 when the first clause gives a condition for the second clause.
Pattern
  • Verb/adjective stem ending in consonant + 으면
  • Verb/adjective stem ending in vowel +
  • Noun + 이면
Examples
  • 시간이 있으면 전화하세요.
    • = If you have time, please call.
  • 날씨가 좋으면 공원에 갈 거예요.
    • = If the weather is good, I will go to the park.
  • 주말이면 사람이 많아요.
    • = If it is the weekend, there are many people.

Important irregular note for TOPIK I
  • 춥다추우면 for (으)면
  • 덥다더우면
  • 맵다매우면
But with 지만, keep the stem: 춥지만, 덥지만, 맵지만

✅ Exam Strategy

Step 1: Identify the relationship

Ask: “Are the two parts opposite, or is the first part a condition?”
  • Opposite / unexpected result → 지만
  • If A, then B → (으)면

Step 2: Watch the ending of the first clause

For (으)면, check whether the stem ends in a consonant or vowel.
  • 먹다 → 먹으면
  • 가다 → 가
  • 좋다 → 좋으면
  • 오다 → 오

Step 3: Do not translate too mechanically

In English, “when” and “if” can both appear for (으)면. In TOPIK I, focus on the condition-result relationship, not only the English word.

Step 4: Use the second clause as evidence

The second clause usually tells you the logic.
  • 바쁘___ 전화하지 마세요.
    • “Busy” creates a condition: 바쁘면
  • 바쁘___ 친절해요.
    • Busy contrasts with being kind/helpful: 바쁘지만

⚠️ Pitfalls

Pitfall 1: Choosing 지만 only because the sentence has a negative feeling

Not every negative word needs 지만.
  • 시간이 없으면 못 가요.
    • = If I do not have time, I cannot go.
      Condition, not contrast.

Pitfall 2: Ignoring irregular forms

Wrong: 춥으면
Correct: 추우면
Wrong: 덥으면
Correct: 더우면

Pitfall 3: Using (으)면 when the second clause is clearly opposite

Wrong: 이 책은 어렵으면 재미있어요.
Correct: 이 책은 어렵지만 재미있어요.

Pitfall 4: Forgetting noun forms

  • 학생 + 이지만 → 학생이지만
  • 주말 + 이면 → 주말이면
  • 친구 + 면 → 친구면

🧭 Final Review

Before choosing an answer on TOPIK I, ask:
  1. Are the two clauses contrasting? → use 지만
  1. Is the first clause a condition? → use (으)면
  1. Is the first word irregular? → check forms like 추우면 / 더우면
  1. Is it a noun? → check 이지만 / 이면
Mastery goal: You should be able to explain why a sentence needs 지만 or (으)면 without translating every word. TOPIK rewards understanding the sentence logic.
