TL;DR
  • 그리고 connects added information: “and / and then.”
  • 아니면 gives a choice: “or / if not.”
  • On TOPIK I, decide whether the sentence is listing/sequence or choice/alternative.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note: Read the example sentences aloud. 특히 그리고는 앞뒤 내용을 자연스럽게 이어 말하고, 아니면은 두 선택지를 또렷하게 나누어 말하세요.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I often tests small connector words inside short conversations, notices, and simple reading passages. 그리고 and 아니면 both connect ideas, but their job is different.
  • 그리고 = add one thing to another.
    • 빵을 샀어요. 그리고 우유도 샀어요.
    • I bought bread. And I bought milk too.
  • 아니면 = choose between two possibilities.
    • 커피를 마실까요? 아니면 주스를 마실까요?
    • Shall we drink coffee? Or shall we drink juice?
The key TOPIK skill is not translation first. It is recognizing the relationship between the two parts.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1) 그리고 = addition or sequence

Use 그리고 when the second sentence adds another fact, action, person, object, or event.
Pattern
  • Sentence A. 그리고 Sentence B.
  • Noun A하고 Noun B is common inside one sentence, but 그리고 connects bigger ideas.
Examples
  • 저는 한국어를 공부해요. 그리고 영어도 공부해요.
  • 오늘은 월요일이에요. 그리고 날씨가 좋아요.
  • 어제 친구를 만났어요. 그리고 같이 영화를 봤어요.

2) 아니면 = choice or alternative

Use 아니면 when the speaker gives options. It often appears with questions, plans, menus, times, and decisions.
Pattern
  • Option A? 아니면 Option B?
  • Option A. 아니면 Option B.
Examples
  • 지하철을 탈까요? 아니면 버스를 탈까요?
  • 오늘 갈까요? 아니면 내일 갈까요?
  • 물을 드릴까요? 아니면 차를 드릴까요?

3) Fast meaning test

Ask yourself:
  • Are both things true or both actions happening? → 그리고
  • Must the person choose one option? → 아니면
  • Is the second part simply more information? → 그리고
  • Does the sentence mean “if not / otherwise / or”? → 아니면

✅ Exam Strategy

  1. Read before and after the blank. Do not choose from one word only.
  1. Look for choice markers. If both sides are possible answers to the same question, use 아니면.
  1. Look for accumulation. If the sentence stacks information, use 그리고.
  1. Check the tone. 아니면 often sounds like a decision point. 그리고 sounds like continuation.
  1. Avoid overusing 그리고. Many beginners choose it whenever they see two clauses. TOPIK distractors often exploit this.

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Mistake 1: Using 그리고 for choices
    • ❌ 커피를 마실까요? 그리고 차를 마실까요?
    • ✅ 커피를 마실까요? 아니면 차를 마실까요?
  • Mistake 2: Using 아니면 for simple lists
    • ❌ 저는 사과를 샀어요. 아니면 바나나도 샀어요.
    • ✅ 저는 사과를 샀어요. 그리고 바나나도 샀어요.
  • Mistake 3: Translating “and” too quickly
    • In English, “Do you want coffee and tea?” can be unclear. In TOPIK Korean, if it is a choice, use 아니면.
  • Mistake 4: Ignoring context
    • 오늘 갈까요? ___ 내일 갈까요? is not a sequence. It asks for a choice, so the answer is 아니면.
