그러므로 is a logical connector. It links one sentence to the consequence or conclusion that follows.

A is true. Therefore, B follows.

This is not the casual “so...” you use with friends. It is a polished connector for arguments, reports, explanations, essays, and presentations.

1. Logical conclusion

Use 그러므로 when the second sentence follows logically from the first.
  • 증거가 충분하지 않습니다. 그러므로 더 조사해야 합니다.

      The evidence is not sufficient. Therefore, we need to investigate more.
 

2. Formal result

Use it when explaining a result in writing.

3. Recommendation or action

Use it before a conclusion like “we should,” “it is necessary,” or “action is needed.”

Clause + comma + 그러므로 + conclusion

In writing, it can also appear after a semicolon-like pause, but the separate sentence style is easiest.

  • 시간이 부족하므로 우선순위를 정해야 합니다. ✅ Another formal option with -(으)므로.
 

Formal tone pairs well with formal endings

그러므로 often appears with -습니다, -아/어야 합니다, 필요합니다, 중요합니다, and written style.
 
  • 그러므로 신중한 접근이 필요합니다.
  • 그러므로 문제를 다시 검토해야 합니다.
  • 그러므로 결론을 내리기 어렵다.

1. Evidence → conclusion

  • 자료가 충분하지 않습니다. 그러므로 정확한 판단을 하기 어렵습니다.

Everyday “so.”
  • 비가 와요. 그래서 집에 있을 거예요.
      • It’s raining. So I’ll stay home.
 

그러므로

Formal “therefore / for that reason.”
  • 비가 많이 옵니다. 그러므로 외출을 자제해 주십시오.
      • It is raining heavily. Therefore, please refrain from going out.
 

따라서

Formal “therefore / accordingly.” Often feels slightly more academic or procedure-based.
  • 자료가 부족합니다. 따라서 추가 조사가 필요합니다.
      • The data is insufficient. Therefore, further research is necessary.
 

그러니까

“So / that’s why,” often conversational and sometimes used to clarify or insist.
  • 그러니까 제 말은, 시간이 더 필요하다는 거예요.

결과적으로

“As a result / consequently,” emphasizes the final outcome.
  • 결과적으로 비용이 줄었습니다.
      • As a result, costs decreased.
 

즉

“In other words / namely,” not “therefore.”
  • 이것은 단순한 실수가 아닙니다. 즉, 구조적인 문제입니다.
      • This is not a simple mistake. In other words, it is a structural problem.

  • ⚠️ 그러므로 and 따라서 overlap. 따라서 is especially common in academic/procedural writing; 그러므로 highlights “for that reason.”
