At Level 5, Korean grammar often asks you to show how you know, why something is being done, what fact should be considered, and how formal the sentence should sound.
 
The “scholar tone” is calm, precise, and evidence-aware:

1. Evidence basis: -에 근거하여 ⚖️

Use this when a claim, analysis, judgment, report, or decision rests on evidence.

Use this when a fact should shape your conclusion.

4. Formal style control: 문어체, 구어체, 해라체 🖋️

A Level 5 sentence can be grammatically correct and still sound wrong if the style is mixed.
  • 근거가 부족하므로 주장이 약하다. [geun-geo-ga bu-jo-ka-meu-ro ju-jang-i ya-ka-da]
      • Because the evidence is insufficient, the argument is weak. 🧠
  • Avoid mixing: 부족해요 [bu-jo-kae-yo] with 약하다 [ya-ka-da] in the same formal paragraph.
 

5. Logic connectors: contrast, inevitability, and official results 🧭

Scholar tone also depends on picking the right relationship:
  • 반면에 [ban-myeon-e] = whereas / while: balanced contrast ⚖️
  • -기 마련이다 [-gi ma-ryeon-i-da] = is bound to / naturally tends to 🧲
  • -(으)로 인하여 [-(eu)-ro in-ha-yeo] = due to, formal cause 🧾
  • -는데도 불구하고 [-neun-de-do bul-gu-ha-go] = despite the fact that 🛡️

      기록 = records, 판단 = judgment, 내리다 = to make/issue.
 
2. Purpose → action

      • This notice aims to inform people of the procedure. 📢
      안내문 = notice, 절차 = procedure, 알리다 = to inform.
 
3. Consideration → fair conclusion
  • 초보자라는 점을 감안하면 설명을 더 쉽게 해야 합니다. [cho-bo-ja-ra-neun jeo-meul ga-ma-na-myeon seol-myeo-ngeul deo swip-ge hae-ya ham-ni-da]
      • Considering the fact that they are beginners, the explanation should be made easier. 🌱
      초보자 = beginner, 설명 = explanation, 쉽다 = to be easy.

  • Action verb + 는 데 목적이 있다

    • 보호하다 → 보호하는 데 목적이 있다 [bo-ho-ha-da → bo-ho-ha-neun de mok-jeo-gi it-da]

Consideration

  • Action/process: -는 점을 감안하면
    • 늘어나다 → 늘어나는 점을 감안하면 [neu-reo-na-da → neu-reo-na-neun jeo-meul ga-ma-na-myeon]
  • Descriptive fact: -다는 점을 감안하면
