~지 않았다면 = "if I hadn't [done X]" — focuses on not doing something. ~했더라면 = "if I had [done X]" — focuses on doing something. Both are past counterfactuals: 가지 않았다면 (if I hadn't gone) / 갔더라면 (if I had gone). They're mirror images — choose based on whether the real event happened or didn't.

Pitfall: 때문에 vs. 덕분에

Both mean "because of" but 때문에 is neutral or negative (그것 때문에 힘들었어요 — It was hard because of that), while 덕분에 is always positive (그것 덕분이에요 — Thanks to that). Don't use 때문에 when expressing gratitude for a turning point!

Grammar Tip: 바뀌다 vs. 바꾸다

바꾸다 = to change something (transitive): 인생을 바꿨어요 (changed my life). 바뀌다 = to be changed / to change on its own (intransitive): 인생이 바뀌었어요 (my life changed). The subject changes too: 나는 인생을 바꿨어요 vs. 인생이 바뀌었어요.

When using ~지 않았다면, the result clause often uses ~았/었을 거예요 (would have). Put them together: 가지 않았다면 몰랐을 거예요. (If I hadn't gone, I wouldn't have known.) This is the standard counterfactual pair in Korean.
