TOPIK I Prep
TL;DR
  • TOPIK II is not just “more vocabulary”; it asks you to handle longer texts, implied meaning, formal writing, and abstract topics.
  • Your next stage is to move from sentence-level accuracy to paragraph-level understanding and expression.
  • Build a bridge with connectors, topic vocabulary, summary skills, and timed practice.
🎧
🎧 Helper Note
Read the Korean examples aloud. For each one, mark where your voice naturally pauses: after connectors like 그러나, 따라서, 반면에, and before the main conclusion.

🔑 The Big Picture

TOPIK I checks whether you can understand and use everyday Korean at a beginner level. TOPIK II checks whether you can follow longer, denser, and more formal Korean across real-life, academic, and social topics.
The biggest change is not only difficulty. It is the type of thinking required.
  • TOPIK I: “Can I understand this sentence or short conversation?”
  • TOPIK II: “Can I understand the writer’s purpose, structure, attitude, and implied conclusion?”
  • TOPIK I: “Can I choose the correct grammar form?”
  • TOPIK II: “Can I use grammar and vocabulary to connect ideas clearly?”
  • TOPIK I: “Can I answer familiar daily-life questions?”
  • TOPIK II: “Can I explain, compare, summarize, infer, and write logically?”
Think of TOPIK II as the road from survival Korean to organized Korean.

🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns

1. From words to word families

TOPIK II rewards learners who recognize related forms.
  • 증가하다 = to increase
  • 증가 = increase
  • 증가율 = rate of increase
  • 증가세 = upward trend
  • 급증하다 = to increase sharply
Instead of memorizing one word alone, build a small family around it.

2. From sentence meaning to paragraph structure

In TOPIK I, one sentence often gives the answer directly. In TOPIK II, answers often depend on structure.
Common structure markers:
  • 문제 제기: 최근 … 문제가 되고 있다.
  • 원인: 이는 … 때문이다.
  • 대조: 반면에 / 그러나 / 하지만
  • 결과: 따라서 / 그러므로 / 그 결과
  • 주장: …해야 한다 / …할 필요가 있다

3. From grammar forms to functions

TOPIK II grammar is less about naming forms and more about recognizing what they do.
Function
Useful patterns
Example
Cause
-기 때문에, -아/어서, -느라고
준비가 부족했기 때문에 좋은 결과를 얻지 못했다.
Contrast
-지만, -는 반면에, 그러나
도시는 편리한 반면에 생활비가 많이 든다.
Purpose
-기 위해서, -도록
실력을 높이기 위해서 매일 듣기 연습을 한다.
Concession
-아/어도, -더라도
어렵더라도 꾸준히 연습해야 한다.

4. From short answers to written control

TOPIK II Writing asks you to organize ideas clearly. Even simple ideas must be expressed with logical flow.
Basic sentence:
  • 한국어 공부는 어렵다.
TOPIK II-style upgrade:
  • 한국어 공부는 꾸준한 노력이 필요하기 때문에 어렵게 느껴질 수 있지만, 매일 조금씩 연습하면 실력을 안정적으로 향상시킬 수 있다.

✅ Exam Strategy

Build your TOPIK II bridge in four stages

  1. Stabilize TOPIK I foundations
      • Do not abandon beginner grammar.
      • TOPIK II still depends on accurate particles, tenses, numbers, and honorific basics.
  1. Add intermediate connectors
      • Learn connectors by function: cause, contrast, result, condition, example.
      • Practice replacing short sentences with connected sentences.
  1. Read for structure
      • Before translating every word, ask: “What is the topic? What is the writer doing here?”
      • Circle contrast and result markers.
  1. Write in paragraphs
      • Use one topic sentence.
      • Add one explanation.
      • Add one example or reason.
      • End with a clear conclusion.

A practical weekly rhythm

  • Day 1–2: Vocabulary families and example sentences
  • Day 3: Reading paragraphs and identifying structure
  • Day 4: Listening for keywords and speaker attitude
  • Day 5: Writing one short organized paragraph
  • Day 6: Timed mixed practice
  • Day 7: Error review and sentence upgrades

⚠️ Pitfalls

  • Pitfall 1: Memorizing advanced grammar without control.
    • Using difficult grammar incorrectly lowers clarity. Accurate intermediate Korean is better than unstable advanced Korean.
  • Pitfall 2: Translating every word first.
    • TOPIK II often tests the role of a sentence in the paragraph. Structure can guide meaning.
  • Pitfall 3: Ignoring writing until late.
    • Writing improves slowly. Start with short paragraph planning even before full essay practice.
  • Pitfall 4: Treating listening as passive exposure.
    • After listening, check what keyword, ending, or discourse marker gave the answer.
  • Pitfall 5: Studying vocabulary without topic categories.
    • TOPIK II topics often include society, environment, education, work, technology, health, and culture.
