IS #192 β The Rhythm of Intermediate Speech: Pacing
Learn to control the flow, speed, and natural rhythm of Korean conversation.
Iru Helper Note
Korean speech has a natural rhythm built through pause words, connectors, and pacing tools. Knowing how to slow down, fill space, and signal thinking is just as important as vocabulary.
κ·Έκ²... μ΄λ»κ² λ§νλ©΄ μ’μκΉμ? μ... λ§μμ, κ·Έλ κ² μκ°ν΄μ.
(That... how should I put it? Hmm... right, I think that way.)
Β
π΅ What You'll Learn Today
Today you'll learn the tools Korean speakers use to pace themselves naturally β how to buy time when thinking, how to signal hesitation without losing the floor, how to chunk ideas, and how to transition smoothly. These pacing tools are the difference between sounding fluent and sounding robotic.
π Korean Pacing & Rhythm Tools
Expression | Meaning | When to Use |
μ... | Hmm... | thinking, pause |
κ·Έκ²... | That is... / Well... | opening a thought |
μ κΈ°... | Um... / Excuse me... | soft filler, gentle start |
μ΄... | Uh... | spontaneous pause |
μ κΉλ§μ | Just a moment / Hold on | buying time |
μ΄λ»κ² λ§νλ©΄ μ’μκΉμ? | How should I put it? | searching for words |
λλΌκ³ νλλΌ... | What was it again... | trying to remember |
κ·Έλ¬λκΉ | So / That is to say | clarifying/rephrasing |
μ¦ | In other words / Namely | formal clarifier |
λ€μ λ§νλ©΄ | To say it again / In other words | rephrasing |
μλ¬΄νΌ / μ΄μ¨λ | Anyway / In any case | redirecting / wrapping up |
κ·Έλμ μμ μ | So the point is | getting to the conclusion |
μΌλ¨μ | For now / First of all | sequencing first idea |
νλ§λλ‘ | In a word / To put it simply | summary opener |
μ½κ² λ§νλ©΄ | To put it simply | simplifying an idea |
π‘ Key pattern: Open with κ·Έκ²... or μ..., pause with μ κΉλ§μ, rephrase with κ·Έλ¬λκΉ, and land with μλ¬΄νΌ or κ·Έλμ μμ μ. These four moves cover 80% of real pacing needs.
π¬ Conversations in Action
Dialogue 1 β μκ° μ 리νκΈ° (Organizing thoughts)
A: κ·Έ νλ‘μ νΈμ λν΄ μ΄λ»κ² μκ°ν΄μ?
(What do you think about that project?)
B: μ... κ·Έκ²... μ΄λ»κ² λ§νλ©΄ μ’μκΉμ? μ κΉλ§μ.
(Hmm... that is... how should I put it? Just a moment.)
A: μ²μ²ν λ§ν΄λ λΌμ.
(You can take your time.)
B: κ·Έλ¬λκΉ, μ’μ μ λ μλλ° κ°μ ν λΆλΆλ μλ κ² κ°μμ. μ무νΌ, κΈμ μ μΌλ‘ λ³΄κ³ μμ΄μ.
(So, there are good parts but I think there are also areas to improve. Anyway, I'm looking at it positively.)
Dialogue 2 β μμ½νκΈ° (Summarizing)
A: μ€λͺ
μ΄ μ’ λ³΅μ‘νλλ°, ν΅μ¬μ΄ λμμ?
(The explanation was a bit complex β what's the core point?)
B: νλ§λλ‘ λ§νλ©΄, μ§κΈλ³΄λ€ λ ν¨μ¨μ μΈ λ°©λ²μ΄ νμνλ€λ κ±°μμ.
(To put it in a word, it's that we need a more efficient method than we have now.)
A: μ, μ½κ² λ§νλ©΄ κ·Έλ° κ±°λ€μ!
(Ah, so if you put it simply, that's what it is!)
π Cultural Note β The Value of Deliberate Pauses
In many Western speaking cultures, silence or hesitation can feel awkward. In Korean conversation, brief pauses with μ... or κ·Έκ²... are completely normal and even signal thoughtfulness rather than uncertainty. A speaker who pauses to collect their thoughts is seen as careful and sincere. Using these pacing tools β rather than rushing or staying silent β shows conversational maturity.

Common Pitfall
Don't overuse κ·Έλ¬λκΉ as a filler β it means "in other words / so" and implies you're clarifying. If you just want a pause, μ... or μ΄... is more natural. Overusing κ·Έλ¬λκΉ makes it sound like you're always correcting yourself.

Sentence Starters
Expression | Position in Speech |
μ... / κ·Έκ²... | very beginning |
κ·Έλ¬λκΉ | mid-sentence restart |
μΌλ¨μ | before first point |
μλ¬΄νΌ / μ΄μ¨λ | wrap up / redirect |
κ·Έλμ μμ μ | conclusion lead-in |
νλ§λλ‘ | summary opener |
μ½κ² λ§νλ©΄ | simplification |
Production Tip
The key to natural pacing is letting the expressions signal your intent to the listener. μΌλ¨μ = "I have more to say after this." μλ¬΄νΌ = "I'm wrapping up." κ·Έλ¬λκΉ = "Here's the clearer version." Each word tells the listener what to expect next.

Useful Phrases
Expression | Use |
μμ λ§ λ§ν΄μ€ μ μμ΄μ? | Can you get to the point? |
λμ€μ μ²μ²ν μκΈ°ν΄μ | Let's talk later in detail |
κ³νμ μΈμ°λ€ | to make a plan |
λμνμ§ μλ€ | to disagree |
λ€μ νλ² μ€λͺ
ν΄ μ£ΌμΈμ | please explain once more |
Conversation Tip
μ... at the start of a sentence signals "I'm thinking" without losing the conversational floor. In Korean, the person who uses natural fillers confidently actually sounds MORE fluent β silence without a signal can seem like the turn is over.
