The Big Picture
In the last lesson you learned to ask ์ ์ง๋์ด์? โ now it's time to answer it well. In Korean small talk, how you respond matters less for the literal truth and more for keeping the conversation light and warm. Most people answer positively even on an "okay" day, save the real details for close friends, and use small phrases like ๋๋ถ์ (thanks to you) to sound extra polite. This lesson gives you a toolkit of responses โ from upbeat to neutral to honest โ so you always know what to say back.
The Response Spectrum: How Much to Share
Think of your answer as sitting on a spectrum from "polite default" to "honest detail":
- Quick & Positive ๐ (safe default) โ ๋ค, ์ ์ง๋์ด์ or ๋๋ถ์ ์ ์ง๋์ด์. This is what most people say to coworkers, acquaintances, neighbors โ even on an average day. It's not dishonest; it's just how the greeting ritual works, similar to "good, thanks!" in English.
- Neutral ๐ โ ๊ทธ๋ฅ ๊ทธ๋์ / ๊ทธ๋ญ์ ๋ญ์ด์์ ("so-so" / "same as usual"). A step more honest, totally normal with people you know a bit better.
- Honest & Detailed ๐ฌ โ sharing what's actually going on (good or bad) is for close friends and family. Telling an acquaintance "์ ์ ์์ด ๋ฐ๋นด์ด์" (crazy busy) is fine and common; telling them "๋๋ฌด ํ๋ค์์ด์" (it's been really tough) usually goes only to people you trust.
Key cultural note: Nobody expects a long answer. A short positive reply is often the end of the exchange, not an invitation for more โ unless the other person follows up with "์์?" (why?) or "๋ฌด์จ ์ผ ์์ด์?" (did something happen?).
Essential Phrase Kit
[ne, jal ji-naess-eo-yo] โ Yes, I've been well. ๐

Putting It Together
- A: ์ ์ง๋์ด์? [ne, deok-bu-ne jal ji-naess-eo-yo] โ "A: Have you been well? B: Yes, I've been well, thanks to you."
Adding ๋๋ถ์ (thanks to you) is a small touch that makes a everyday-polite reply sound extra warm โ great for coworkers and people slightly senior to you.
- A: ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์ง๋์ด์? B: ๊ทธ๋ฅ ๋๊ฐ์ฃ . [geu-nyang ttok-gat-jyo. il-ha-go jip-e ga-go] โ "A: How have you been? B: Same as always โ work, then home."
This is a classic, slightly self-deprecating reply that many Korean adults use โ it's normal, not negative, and often gets a laugh.
- A: ์ ์ง๋์ด? B: ์... [eum... sa-jil yo-jeum jom him-deu-reoss-eo] โ "A: Have you been good? B: Hmm... actually, things have been tough lately."
This kind of honest reply is reserved for close friends โ the pause (์...) and "์ฌ์ค" (actually) signal "I'm about to share something real," which is appropriate only with people you trust.
Speaking Practice: Mini Dialogues
Dialogue 1 โ Coworker check-in (Everyday, positive default)
[ji-eun ssi, jal ji-naess-eo-yo?] โ "Ji-eun, have you been well?"
[ne, deok-bu-ne jal ji-naess-eo-yo. min-su ssi-neun-yo?] โ "Yes, I've been well, thanks. And you, Min-su?"
[jeo-do jal ji-naess-eo-yo. jo-eun il-do iss-eoss-eo-yo!] โ "I've been well too. Something good happened, actually!"
[jin-jja-yo? mwon-de-yo?] โ "Really? What is it?"
Dialogue 2 โ Close friends, honest catch-up (Casual)
[sa-ra-ya, yo-jeum eo-tteo-ke ji-naess-eo?] โ "Sara, how have you been lately?"
[sa-jil yo-jeum jom jeong-sin-eop-si ba-ppass-eo. sae jik-jang ttae-mun-e] โ "Honestly, I've been pretty busy lately โ because of my new job."
[a, geu-raet-gu-na. geu-rae-do gwaen-chan-a?] โ "Oh, I see. Are you doing okay though?"
[eung, him-deul-ji-man gwaen-chan-a. neo-neun jal ji-naess-eo?] โ "Yeah, it's tough but I'm okay. Have you been well?"
Speaking Tip
When you're not sure how much detail to give, start with ๋ค, ์ ์ง๋์ด์ or ๋๋ถ์ ์ ์ง๋์ด์ โ it's always safe, always polite, and never wrong. You can always add more (์ข์ ์ผ์ด ์์์ด์ / ์ข ๋ฐ๋นด์ด์) if the conversation continues, but you never have to.
Pitfalls to Dodge
Giving a long, detailed answer about a rough week to an acquaintance or coworker you don't know well โ โ Keep it short (๊ทธ๋ฅ ๊ทธ๋์ / ์ข ๋ฐ๋นด์ด์) โ save the details for close friends.
- โ Saying ๋๋ฌด ํ๋ค์์ด์ (it's been really tough) to someone you just met โ โ This level of honesty is for close friends and family; with others, ๊ทธ๋ญ์ ๋ญ์ด์์ is plenty.
Forgetting to return the question โ โ Always add "___์จ๋์?" or "๋๋?" โ leaving it one-sided can feel abrupt.
- โ Treating ๋๋ถ์ as optional fluff to skip โ โ It's a small word that adds real warmth, especially toward people slightly senior to you โ worth using often.
