🌈 The Big Picture

도중 means middle, midway, or during the course of something.
 
The pattern -는 도중 puts an action before that noun:
 
V-는 도중 = the middle of doing V / while doing V / during the process of doing V

🎨 The Core “Middle of Doing” Family

1. V-는 도중에 = while doing / in the middle of doing

Use 에 when something happens during the action.
  • 공부하는 도중에 알림이 왔어요. = A notification came while I was studying.
  • 말하는 도중에 끊어서 미안해요. = Sorry for interrupting while you were speaking.
  • 요리하는 도중에 손을 베었어요. = I cut my hand while cooking.
 

2. V-는 도중이다 = be in the middle of doing

Use 이다 when describing the current state.
  • 지금 회의하는 도중이에요. = I’m in the middle of a meeting now.
  • 아직 확인하는 도중입니다. = We are still in the middle of checking.
  • 자료를 정리하는 도중이에요. = I’m in the middle of organizing the materials.
 

3. V-는 도중이라서 = because someone is in the middle of doing

Use it to explain why another action is difficult or delayed.
  • 운전하는 도중이라서 답장을 못 해요. = I can’t reply because I’m driving.
  • 수업을 듣는 도중이라서 조용히 해야 해요. = Since I’m in class, I have to be quiet.
 

4. V-는 도중의 N = a noun connected to the middle/process

This sounds more written or descriptive.
  • 작업하는 도중의 실수 = a mistake made during the work
  • 이동하는 도중의 사고 = an accident during movement/travel
  • 공부하는 도중의 메모 = notes from while studying

1. Mid-action interruption

  • 영화를 보는 도중에 친구에게서 전화가 왔어요.

2. Current in-progress state

🧩 General Formation Rule

Use an action verb with the present noun modifier -는, then add 도중.
 

Action verbs → V-는 도중

  • 보다 → 보는 도중
  • 먹다 → 먹는 도중
  • 읽다 → 읽는 도중
  • 듣다 → 듣는 도중
  • 만들다 → 만드는 도중
  • 회의하다 → 회의하는 도중
 
Then attach what the sentence needs:
  • 보는 도중에 = while watching
  • 보는 도중이에요 = I’m in the middle of watching
  • 보는 도중이라서 = because I’m in the middle of watching
  • 보는 도중의 장면 = a scene during watching
 

🚨 Exception Rule(s)

  • For normal “in the middle of doing,” use V-는 도중, not V-(으)ㄴ 도중.
    • ✅ 공부하는 도중
    • ❌ 공부한 도중 when you mean “while studying”
  • Do not attach 도중 directly to the dictionary form.
    • ✅ 운전하는 도중
    • ❌ 운전하다 도중
  • ㄹ-ending action verbs drop ㄹ before 는.
    • 만들다 → 만드는 도중
    • 살다 → 사는 도중
  • 도중 is a noun, so particles matter.
    • 도중에 = during/in the middle
    • 도중이다 = be in the middle
    • 도중이라서 = because one is in the middle

  • ⚠️ In casual speech, -다가 is often more natural for interruption: 공부하다가 전화가 왔어요.
 
⏳ Bottom line: -는 도중 is your “in the middle of doing” noun phrase. Add the right particle to say what happened, why something cannot happen, or what is currently in progress.
