IS #164 โ The Art of the Follow-up
How to check in, nudge politely, and keep things moving โ without sounding pushy.
Iru Helper Note
Following up in Korean requires even more softening than in English. A direct "Have you decided yet?" can feel aggressive. The key is framing your nudge as a check-in or gentle reminder, not a demand.
ํน์ ์์ง ์๊ฐ ์ค์ด์๋ฉด, ํธํ์ ๋๋ก ์ฐ๋ฝ ์ฃผ์ธ์.
(If you're still thinking about it, please reach out whenever it's convenient.)

๐ฌ What You'll Learn Today

๐ Follow-up Phrases
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
์ง๋๋ฒ์ ๋ง์๋๋ฆฐ ๊ฒ์ฒ๋ผ์ | As I mentioned last time... | Callback to prior conversation |
ํน์ ์๊ฐํด ๋ณด์
จ์ด์? | Have you had a chance to think about it? | Soft nudge |
ํ์ธํด ๋ณด์
จ์ด์? | Have you been able to check on it? | Status check |
์์ง ์ฐ๋ฝ์ด ์์ด์์ | Because I haven't heard back yet... | Explains reason for follow-up |
์ธ์ ์ฏค ๊ฐ๋ฅํ์ค ๊ฒ ๊ฐ์์? | When do you think it might be possible? | Timeline inquiry |
์ข ๋ ์๊ฐํด ๋ณด๊ณ ์ฐ๋ฝ๋๋ฆด๊ฒ์ | I'll think about it more and get back to you | Buying time gracefully |
๋ค์ ํ๋ฒ ํ์ธ ๋ถํ๋๋ ค๋ ๋ ๊น์? | Could I ask you to check on it once more? | Polite re-request |
ํน์ ์
๋ฐ์ดํธ๊ฐ ์์ผ์๋ฉด ์๋ ค ์ฃผ์ธ์ | Please let me know if there's any update | Open waiting |
๊ธฐ๋ค๋ฆฌ๊ณ ์์๊ฒ์ | I'll be waiting / I'm looking forward to hearing | Warm patience |
๋น ๋ฅธ ๋ต๋ณ ๋ถํ๋๋ ค์ | I'd appreciate a quick response | Gentle urgency |
์ ๊ฐ ๋ค์ ์ฐ๋ฝ๋๋ ค๋ ๋ ๊น์? | May I follow up with you again? | Asking permission to nudge |
์งํ ์ํฉ์ด ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ๋๋์? | How is the progress going? | Project update request |
๐ก Key pattern: ํน์ (by any chance) softens almost any follow-up question. ๊ฒฐ์ ํ์
จ์ด์? (Have you decided?) sounds blunt; ํน์ ๊ฒฐ์ ํ์
จ์ด์? sounds considerate.
๐ฌ Conversations in Action

จ์ด์? ์์ง ์ฐ๋ฝ์ด ์์ด์์.
(By any chance, have you been able to check the email I sent last week? I haven't heard back yet.)

๐ Cultural Note โ ๋์น and the Polite Follow-up
Korean professional culture prizes ๋์น โ the ability to read a situation. A follow-up that feels impatient or demanding signals low ๋์น and can damage a relationship. Instead, Koreans often frame follow-ups as expressions of care: "I just wanted to make sure everything is okay" rather than "I need an answer." Mastering this frame โ considerate rather than demanding โ makes you far more effective in Korean professional communication.

Useful Phrases
Phrase | Use |
์ค๋ ์ค์ผ๋ก ํ์ธํ ๊ฒ์ | "I'll check by today" |
์ด๋ฒ ์ฃผ ์์ผ๋ก ๋๋ฆด๊ฒ์ | "I'll get it to you within the week" |

Conversation Tip
When you're the one being followed up on, always give a time estimate โ even a rough one. "์ด๋ฒ ์ฃผ ์์ผ๋ก ๋๋ฆด๊ฒ์" (I'll get it to you within the week) relieves the other person's uncertainty and preserves the relationship.
