🌈 The Big Picture

In Korean conversation, staying silent while someone talks can feel cold — Koreans frequently sprinkle in small reactions called 맞장구 [mat-jang-gu] ("matching the beat") to show they're following along. 진짜요? and 그래요? are the most common — both roughly mean "Really?", but they carry slightly different flavors depending on tone and context. Mastering these makes you sound like an engaged, natural conversation partner. 🎭

🎭 Shades of Reaction

Not all "Really?"s are the same:
  • 진짜요? [jin-jja-yo] — genuine surprise or disbelief, "for real?!" 😲
  • 그래요? [geu-rae-yo] — softer, "oh, is that so?" — shows interest without big surprise 🙂
  • 정말요? [jeong-mal-yo] — similar to 진짜요? but a touch more formal/polite 🎩
  • Tone matters: a rising pitch = surprise, a flat tone = simple acknowledgment

🧭 Speaking Tip

Don't wait until someone finishes a long story to react — drop in small 맞장구 like 진짜요?, 그래요?, or 아하 WHILE they're talking. It signals "I'm listening" and keeps the conversation warm and alive. 🎭

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ Saying 진짜예요? when you mean a statement → ✅ 진짜예요 (no rising "?" tone) = "It's true," while 진짜요? = "Really?" — tone and context decide which you need.
❌ Using with your boss or elders → ✅ Save 헐 for close friends; use 진짜요? or 정말요? in polite settings.
❌ Reacting with a flat, bored 그래요... → ✅ Tone matters! A flat 그래요 can sound dismissive — keep your pitch warm and curious.
❌ Overusing the same reaction every time → ✅ Mix it up: 진짜요?, 그래요?, 와!, 대단해요! — variety sounds more natural than repeating one word.
Great job — you can now react to conversations naturally with 맞장구! 😮✨
