Thanking Someone for Time/Effort
Learn to express sincere gratitude in Korean — not just 감사합니다, but the fuller, warmer phrases that make Koreans feel truly appreciated.
Iru Helper Note
In Korean, the most natural and warm thank-you goes beyond 감사합니다. You acknowledge what the person gave up or what they did: 시간 내주셔서 감사해요 (thank you for making time). This structure — [reason]-아/어서 감사해요 — is the core of heartfelt Korean gratitude.
시간 내주셔서 정말 감사해요. 덕분에 많이 도움이 됐어요.
(Thank you so much for making time. Thanks to you, I was really helped.)
🙏 What You'll Learn Today
Today you'll learn how to thank someone sincerely for their time, effort, or help in Korean. You'll move beyond 감사합니다 to use the warmer structure ~아/어서 감사해요 (thank you for doing ~), as well as 덕분에 (thanks to you) and ~해주셔서 (for doing ~ on my behalf). These are the phrases that make Korean people feel genuinely appreciated — not just politely acknowledged.
📌 Gratitude Expressions
Expression | Meaning | Notes |
시간 내주셔서 감사해요 | Thank you for making time | Most common heartfelt thanks |
도와주셔서 감사해요 | Thank you for helping me | 도와주다 = to help |
덕분에 | Thanks to you / because of you | Positive cause only |
덕분에 잘 됐어요 | Thanks to you, it went well | Common gratitude phrase |
수고하셨어요 | You've worked hard / thank you for your effort | Said to someone finishing work |
고생하셨어요 | You've been through a lot / thank you | For someone who worked hard or suffered |
신경 써주셔서 감사해요 | Thank you for caring / for thinking of me | Very warm |
챙겨주셔서 감사해요 | Thank you for looking after me | 챙기다 = to take care of |
기다려 주셔서 감사해요 | Thank you for waiting | Useful in service or meeting contexts |
정말 큰 도움이 됐어요 | It was a really big help | Follow-up to thanks |
부담 갖지 마세요 | Please don't feel burdened | When receiving thanks |
천만에요 | You're welcome (formal) | Less common; 별말씀을요 is warmer |
별말씀을요 | Don't mention it (warm) | Most natural response to thanks |
앞으로도 잘 부탁드려요 | Please continue to take care of me | Closing phrase after thanks |
💡 Key pattern: ~아/어서 감사해요 = "thank you FOR doing ~." The reason always comes before: 도와주셔서 감사해요 (thank you for helping me), 기다려 주셔서 감사해요 (thank you for waiting). Drop the ~셔서 for casual/equal-level speech: 도와줘서 고마워.

🌏 Cultural Note — The Meaning of 수고하셨어요
수고하셨어요 is one of the most distinctly Korean phrases for gratitude. Literally "you have labored hard," it's said to service workers, colleagues finishing a shift, or anyone who has made an effort on your behalf. Saying it to a barista when you pick up your coffee, or to a coworker at the end of the day, is a small but deeply Korean gesture of appreciation. Note: it can only be directed downward or horizontally — never upward to a superior (say 감사합니다 instead).
