Talking About Childhood Memories
How to share nostalgic memories, describe what you were like as a child, and connect through shared experiences of growing up.
Iru Helper Note
Childhood memory conversations are deeply bonding in any culture. In Korean, the key is the past tense verb ending -μ/μ- combined with time markers like μ΄λ¦΄ λ (when I was young) and nostalgic expressions like κ·Έλ¦½λ€ (I miss those times).
μ΄λ¦΄ λ μΉκ΅¬λ€μ΄λ λ°μμ λ
Έλ κ² μ μΌ μ’μμ΄μ. μ§κΈλ κ°λ κ·Έλκ° κ·Έλ¦¬μμ.
(When I was young, I loved playing outside with friends the most. I still miss those times sometimes.)
Β
π§ What You'll Learn Today
In this lesson, you'll learn how to share childhood memories in Korean β what you used to do, what you loved, what you were like as a child, and how to express nostalgia warmly. These conversations create genuine emotional connection with Korean speakers, especially when you share specific, personal details rather than generic responses.
π Childhood Memories β Key Expressions

π¬ Conversations in Action

A: μ΄λ¦΄ λ μ΄λ€ μμ΄μμ΄μ? (What kind of child were you?)
B: μ λ λ§μ΄ μμ€μμ΄ λ§μμ΄μ. κ·Όλ° μΉν μΉκ΅¬λ€μ΄λμ μμ² μ λμμ΄μ. (I was very shy. But with close friends I played really well.)

B: λ°©ν λ ν λ¨Έλ μ§μ κ°λ κ² μ μΌ μ’μμ΄μ. νμ λ§μλ κ²λ λ§μ΄ ν΄μ£Όμκ³ μ. (Going to my grandmother's house during vacation was the best. She always made lots of delicious food.)

B: λ§μμ. μ§κΈ μκ°νλ©΄ μ λ§ ν볡ν κΈ°μ΅μ΄μμ. (Right. Thinking about it now, it's really a happy memory.)
π Cultural Note β λ°©ν and Korean Childhood Rhythms
Korean childhood is often structured around academic rhythms β νκΈ° (semester) and λ°©ν (vacation/break, literally "release from school"). Two key breaks are μ¬λ¦ λ°©ν (summer vacation) and κ²¨μΈ λ°©ν (winter vacation). Trips to ν λ¨Έλ μ§ (grandmother's house) during λ°©ν are an iconic childhood memory for many Koreans, often described with immense warmth and nostalgia. Mentioning λ°©ν or asking λ°©ν λ λ νμ΄μ? (What did you do during vacation?) is a natural, warm way to connect through childhood memory conversations.

Grammar Tip
-λ κΈ°μ΅μ΄ μμ΄μ = I have a memory of ~ing. The -λ ending marks something that was ongoing or habitual in the past: μΉκ΅¬λ€μ΄λ λλ κΈ°μ΅ = a memory of playing with friends. It's slightly more literary and warm than just the simple past.
