출근하다 [chul-geun-ha-da] means "to go to work" and 등교하다 [deung-gyo-ha-da] means "to go to school" — both describe your daily commute. To talk about how you get somewhere, use [transportation]을/를 타다 ("to take/ride"). For example: 저는 지하철을 타고 출근해요 — "I take the subway to commute to work." 🚇

A huge part of commute small talk is discussing how long it takes and how bad traffic is:

🧭 Speaking Tip

To describe how you travel, attach 을/를 타다 ("take/ride") or (으)로 ("by [means]") to the transportation noun. 지하철을 타고 가요 and 지하철로 가요 both mean "I go by subway" — the first emphasizes the action of riding, the second emphasizes the method. Mix in 걸어서 ("on foot") for the parts of your trip you walk! 🚶

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

❌ Saying 지하철을 가요 (missing 타다) → ✅ 지하철을 타고 가요 or 지하철로 가요.

❌ Confusing 출근하다 (go to work) with 퇴근하다 (leave work / go home) → ✅ Use 출근 for morning, 퇴근 for evening.

❌ Forgetting -쯔음/정도 when giving approximate times → ✅ 30분쯔음 걸려요 = "about 30 minutes."

❌ Using 막히다 without the subject 차가/길이 → ✅ 차가 막혀요 or 길이 막혀요.
