๐ The Big Picture
์ด๋์? [eo-ttae-yo?], literally "how is it?", is one of the most useful phrases for making suggestions in Korean. Just attach it after any noun and you've made a casual proposal โ no complicated grammar needed.
- ํผ์ ์ด๋์? โ "How about pizza?"
- ์ด ์๋น ์ด๋์? โ "How about this restaurant?"
- ์ฐฝ๊ฐ ์๋ฆฌ ์ด๋์? โ "How about the seat by the window?"
It works for food, plans, places, times โ basically anything you want to float as an option. The response can be a simple ์ข์์ (good), ๊ด์ฐฎ์์ (it's fine), or another suggestion.
๐ญ ์ด๋์? vs. ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด์?: Suggesting vs. Asking for Opinion
์ด๋์? is for floating a quick suggestion or option โ "how about X?" ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด์? [eo-tteo-ke saeng-ga-kae-yo?] is for asking someone's broader opinion โ "what do you think (about X)?"
- ํผ์ ์ด๋์? โ "How about pizza?" (a suggestion โ easy yes/no)
- ์ด ๋ฉ๋ด ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด์? โ "What do you think about this menu?" (invites a fuller opinion)
When you're deciding between options, ์ด๋์? is quick and natural. When you want someone's thoughts or reaction, ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด์? opens more discussion.

๐งญ Speaking Tip
์ด๋์? is your go-to for floating quick suggestions โ just say the item plus ์ด๋์? and you're done. If someone suggests something and you genuinely have no preference, ์ ๋ ๋ค ์ข์์ works great. But if you're asked repeatedly, try to offer at least one real preference (์ ๋ ์ด๊ฒ ์ข์์ / ์ ๋ ~๋ณด๋ค ~๊ฐ ๋ ์ข์์) โ it keeps the conversation moving and shows you're engaged. Once everyone agrees, wrap it up with ๊ทธ๋ผ ์ด๊ฑธ๋ก ํ ๊น์? or ๊ทธ๊ฑธ๋ก ํด์.
โ ๏ธ Pitfalls to Dodge
- โ Using ์ด๋์? when you actually want someone's deeper opinion โ for that, use ์ด๋ป๊ฒ ์๊ฐํด์? instead.
- โ Always answering ์ ๋ ๋ค ์ข์์ โ said too often, it can come across as indecisive or unhelpful. Mix in real preferences sometimes.
- โ Using casual ์ด๋ with someone older or in a formal setting โ stick with ์ด๋์ unless you're close friends.
- โ Forgetting that ์ด๋์? attaches directly to nouns โ no need for extra particles like ์/๋/์ด/๊ฐ before it (์ด๊ฑฐ ์ด๋์?, not ์ด๊ฑฐ๋์ ์ด๋์?).
