TL;DR
- Similar-sound traps are wrong answers that copy the sound of the audio but miss the meaning.
- Listen for the speaker’s intention, relationship, time, and final decision before choosing.
- Use the 2-pass method: answer first, then confirm with keywords, contrast markers, and endings.
🎧 Audio Practice
Read each Track script aloud or record it with TTS. First pass: answer without pausing. Second pass: replay and underline the meaning clues, especially words after 그런데, 하지만, 그래서, 못, 아직, 벌써, and sentence endings like -겠어요, -아/어야 해요, -지 마세요.
🔑 The Big Picture
In TOPIK listening, a wrong answer often sounds very close to something in the audio. This is a sound trap: the option repeats a word, a similar pronunciation, or a related expression, but it does not match the actual meaning.
For example, if the audio says
예약을 취소했어요, an answer with 예약했어요 may look familiar because it shares the word 예약. But the meaning is opposite: made a reservation vs. canceled a reservation. This lesson trains you to separate:
- Sound similarity: “I heard this word.”
- Meaning accuracy: “This option matches what the speaker meant.”
🧩 Core Concepts / Patterns
1. Same keyword, different action
TOPIK distractors often reuse the noun but change the verb.
Audio clue | Trap option | Meaning difference |
표를 샀어요 | 표를 팔았어요 | bought vs. sold |
약속을 미뤘어요 | 약속을 정했어요 | postponed vs. decided |
문을 닫았어요 | 문을 열었어요 | closed vs. opened |
2. Similar sound, different word
Some Korean words sound close, especially when you are listening quickly.
사다buy /살다live
빌리다borrow /빌다wish or pray
닫다close /받다receive
놓다put down /넣다put in
춥다cold /좁다narrow
3. Negation and reversal
A single negative expression can reverse the answer.
안 가요= does not go
못 갔어요= could not go
가지 마세요= please do not go
가지 않아도 돼요= you do not have to go
갈 수 없어요= cannot go
4. Contrast markers
The correct answer is often after the contrast marker.
그런데however
하지만but
그렇지만however
그래도even so
대신instead
If the first sentence says one thing and the second sentence changes it, trust the final meaning.
✅ Exam Strategy
The 2-pass method
- First pass: choose by meaning. Do not pause to translate every word. Ask: “What happened? What does the speaker want?”
- Second pass: confirm the clue. Listen again for the exact verb, negative, time expression, or contrast marker.
- Optional dictation/shadowing: Repeat the sentence aloud, especially the part that made the trap wrong.
Fast elimination checklist
Before choosing, ask:
- Does the option copy a word but change the action?
- Is there a negative word:
안,못,없다,말다,아니다?
- Did the speaker change direction after
그런데or하지만?
- Is the option about the wrong time: yesterday, today, tomorrow, already, not yet?
- Does the option describe the wrong person?
⚠️ Pitfalls
- Choosing the word you remember hearing. TOPIK tests meaning, not memory of isolated words.
- Ignoring the last sentence. The speaker’s final decision often appears at the end.
- Missing small negatives.
못,안, and-지 마세요are short but decisive.
- Confusing similar verbs.
사다/살다,빌리다/빌다,넣다/놓다can create convincing wrong answers.
- Following the first idea after a contrast. If you hear
그런데, prepare for a change.

✅ Final Review
To beat similarity traps, do not ask, “Did I hear this word?” Ask, “Does this option match the speaker’s final meaning?” In TOPIK listening, the correct answer usually matches the action + time + person + intention, not just one familiar sound.
