TL;DR 🦄
  • 🔎 -(으)ㄴ/는가 보다 means it appears / it seems / I gather that... when the speaker infers from a clue rather than claiming certainty.
  • 🧠 In advanced Korean, the key is evidence + distance: it sounds observational, careful, and slightly indirect.
  • 🧭 Compared with -나 보다, -(으)ㄴ/는가 보다 can feel more reflective, written, formal, or analytically framed depending on context.

🌈 The Big Picture

-(으)ㄴ/는가 보다 is a conjecture pattern built from a self-questioning ending plus 보다. It does not say “I know.” It says, “From the signs, this is what appears to be true.” 🔍

At beginner and intermediate levels, learners often use -나 보다 for everyday guesses:
  • 비가 오나 봐요. — I guess it is raining.
  • 바쁜가 봐요. — I guess they are busy.

At an advanced level, the useful skill is choosing the right stance. -(으)ㄴ/는가 보다 can sound more analytical, cautious, or prose-like, especially in narration, reports, reviews, or situations where the speaker wants to avoid sounding too blunt.

Think of it as grammar with a little detective hat: it notices evidence, then speaks politely from a safe distance. 🕵️‍♀️

🎨 The Core Evidence-Based Speculation Family

1. Present action/process: -는가 보다

Use this when the clue suggests an action, process, trend, or ongoing situation.
  • 길어지다길어지는가 보다 — it appears to be getting longer
  • 진행되다진행되는가 보다 — it appears to be proceeding
  • 줄어들다줄어드는가 보다 — it appears to be decreasing

Example:
  • 회의실 불이 아직 켜져 있어요. 논의가 길어지는가 봐요. — The meeting room light is still on. It appears the discussion is running long. 💡
    • 회의실 = meeting room; 불이 켜져 있다 = the light is on; 논의 = discussion.

2. State/adjective: -(으)ㄴ가 보다

Use this when the evidence points to a state, quality, or condition.
  • 부족하다부족한가 보다 — it appears to be insufficient
  • 복잡하다복잡한가 보다 — it appears to be complicated
  • 어렵다어려운가 보다 — it appears to be difficult

Example:
  • 질문이 계속 나오는 걸 보니 설명이 부족한가 봅니다. — Seeing that questions keep coming up, it appears the explanation is insufficient. 📝
    • 질문 = question; 설명 = explanation; 부족하다 = to be insufficient.

3. Noun/identity: 인가 보다

Use this when guessing category, identity, role, or interpretation.
  • 오해오해인가 보다 — it appears to be a misunderstanding
  • 문제문제인가 보다 — it appears to be a problem
  • 결론결론인가 보다 — it appears to be the conclusion

Example:
  • 두 사람이 같은 말을 다르게 이해했어요. 오해인가 봅니다. — The two people understood the same words differently. It appears to be a misunderstanding. 🧩
    • 오해 = misunderstanding; 이해하다 = to understand.

4. Past/completed clue: -았/었나 보다

Use this when present evidence points to something that already happened.
  • 취소되다취소되었나 보다 — it appears to have been canceled
  • 정리되다정리되었나 보다 — it appears to have been settled/organized
  • 끝나다끝났나 보다 — it appears to have ended

Example:
  • 안내문이 내려갔어요. 행사가 취소되었나 봅니다. — The notice came down. It appears the event was canceled. 📌
    • 안내문 = notice; 행사 = event; 취소되다 = to be canceled.

🛠️ How They Work in a Sentence

Advanced use often places the clue first, then the inference:
  • 보니 — seeing that
  • 걸 보니 — seeing the fact that
  • 정황상 — judging from the circumstances
  • 자료를 보면 — looking at the data/materials

Examples:
  • 자료를 보면 수요가 줄어드는가 봅니다. — Looking at the data, demand appears to be decreasing. 📉
    • 자료 = data/materials; 수요 = demand; 줄어들다 = to decrease.
  • 정황상 내부 논의가 이미 끝났는가 봅니다. — Judging from the circumstances, it appears the internal discussion has already ended. 🗂️
    • 정황상 = judging from the circumstances; 내부 = internal.
  • 반응이 조심스러운 걸 보니 사안이 꽤 민감한가 봐요. — Seeing that the response is cautious, the matter seems quite sensitive. ⚖️
    • 반응 = response; 사안 = matter/issue; 민감하다 = to be sensitive.

The pattern pairs beautifully with indirect evidence. It sounds odd if the speaker has direct, confirmed knowledge.

🧩 General Formation Rule

Action/process verbs → -는가 보다

Remove , then add 는가 보다.
  • 진행되다진행되는가 보다
  • 길어지다길어지는가 보다
  • 줄어들다줄어드는가 보다
  • 바뀌다바뀌는가 보다

Adjectives/descriptive verbs → -(으)ㄴ가 보다

  • vowel-ending stem → ㄴ가 보다
    • 복잡하다복잡한가 보다
    • 민감하다민감한가 보다
  • consonant-ending stem → 은가 보다
    • 어렵다어려운가 보다
    • 적다적은가 보다

Nouns → 인가 보다

  • 오해오해인가 보다
  • 문제문제인가 보다
  • 결론결론인가 보다

Past/completed → -았/었나 보다

  • 끝나다끝났나 보다
  • 취소되다취소되었나 보다
  • 정리되다정리되었나 보다
✍️
Spacing note
Because 보다 is an auxiliary adjective in this construction, write it separately:
  • 부족한가 봅니다
  • 진행되는가 봐요
  • 문제인가 봅니다
  • 부족한가봅니다

📚 Cross-check note

The forms in this lesson were checked against National Institute of Korean Language resources. NIKL describes auxiliary 보다 in -은가/는가/나 보다 constructions as expressing conjecture or dim recognition of the preceding action or state, and notes that 보다 is written separately in examples such as 했나 봐 and 사랑하나 봐. ✅

🪞 Synonym Alert

  • -(으)ㄴ/는가 보다 — evidence-based, reflective, sometimes written/analytical: “it appears that...”
  • -나 보다 — common conversational inference: “I guess...”
  • -(으)ㄴ/는 모양이다 — more sign/appearance-focused: “it looks as though...”
  • -(으)ㄴ/는 듯하다 — softer, literary, impressionistic: “it seems as if...”
  • -(으)ㄹ 것 같다 — general “I think / it seems,” very broad and flexible.

Advanced choice tip: use -(으)ㄴ/는가 보다 when you want the reader or listener to feel the inference process.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Dodge

  • ❌ Using it for confirmed facts → ✅ Use it when you are inferring from clues, not reporting what you directly know.
  • 문제가 보다 → ✅ 문제인가 보다 (nouns need ).
  • 자료가 부족하다 보다 → ✅ 자료가 부족한가 보다.
  • ❌ Treating -나 보다, 보다 comparison, and -아/어 보다 as the same → ✅ Separate the jobs: conjecture, comparison, and “try doing.”
  • ❌ Overusing stiff -는가 봅니다 in casual chat → ✅ Use natural conversational forms like 그런가 봐요 or 그런가 봐 when the situation is casual.

🎉 You now have the advanced version: not just “I guess,” but how strongly, how formally, and from what kind of evidence you guess. Sherlock would approve. 🔎✨
