Softening an Opinion: -는 것 같아요 Depth
One pattern. Endless softening power. If you learn to use -는 것 같아요 well, almost everything you say in Korean will sound more natural.
Iru Helper Note
You've already seen -는 것 같아요 in earlier lessons. Now it's time to go deeper. Native Korean speakers use this pattern constantly — not just for opinions, but to soften any statement into an observation. It's how you say something without sounding like you're stating absolute facts, which is at the heart of polite Korean speech.
좀 비싼 것 같아요.
(I think it's a bit pricey. / It seems a bit expensive.)
🔍 What You'll Learn Today
While you've used -는 것 같아요 for basic opinions, today you'll see how this single pattern works across tenses and situations — and why native speakers use it for almost everything from observations to guesses to polite recommendations. Mastering this pattern is one of the fastest ways to level up your spoken Korean.
📌 The Four Forms of -는 것 같아요
Form | When to Use | Example |
[Adj stem]-ㄴ/은 것 같아요 | Describing how something seems right now | 비싼 것 같아요 (seems expensive) |
[Verb stem]-는 것 같아요 | Describing an ongoing action that seems to be happening | 열심히 하는 것 같아요 (seems to be working hard) |
[Verb/Adj past]-ㄴ/은 것 같아요 | Describing something that seems to have happened | 지각한 것 같아요 (seems like they were late) |
[Verb stem]-ㄹ/을 것 같아요 | Guessing what seems likely to happen | 비 올 것 같아요 (seems like it'll rain) |
💡 The core purpose: Each form replaces a blunt statement with a softer observation. You're not saying "it IS expensive" — you're saying "it SEEMS expensive to me." That softness is exactly what makes Korean conversation feel natural.
The most important combo: 좀 + -는 것 같아요
Adding 좀 (a little) before -는 것 같아요 creates an ultra-polite cushion around any opinion:
- 좀 어려운 것 같아요 → "It seems a little difficult to me"
- 좀 무리인 것 같아요 → "It seems a little too much"
- 좀 이른 것 같아요 → "It seems a little early"
💬 Conversations in Action
Mini-Dialogue 1 — At a restaurant
A: 이 메뉴 어때요?
B: 음, 좀 비싼 것 같아요. 다른 거 볼게요.
A: 그럼 이건 어때요? 더 저렴해요.
(A: What do you think of this menu item?
B: Hmm, it seems a bit pricey. Let me look at something else.
A: Then how about this? It's cheaper.)
Mini-Dialogue 2 — Discussing a classmate
A: 저 사람 오늘 왜 이렇게 조용해요?
B: 좀 피곤한 것 같아요. 어제 늦게까지 일했다고 했어요.
A: 아, 그렇군요.
(A: Why is that person so quiet today?
B: They seem a bit tired. They said they worked until late yesterday.
A: Oh, I see.)
🌏 Cultural Note — Why Softening is a Sign of Fluency
In Korean, stating things as direct facts — 비싸요 (it's expensive), 틀렸어요 (you're wrong) — is fine in some contexts but can sound abrupt or even rude in others. Choosing -는 것 같아요 over a direct statement shows:
- That you're making an observation, not a verdict
- That you respect the other person's potential different experience
- That you're socially aware and considerate
This is one reason why learners who master -는 것 같아요 are often perceived as more fluent — it's not just grammar, it's social calibration.
